This hurts so much as a groomer . Their coats helps keep them cool, there is no need to shave any double coat breed unless its a medical reason. I will say if your going to groom at home like you are , the thing on the side is to adjust the blade size from like a 10 to a 30 for the snap on parts. Those are really crappy clippers Ive had to use some like that in a pinch hate them. If I have to shave a double coat breed i usually wont use anything shorter than a 7 which is a metal blade and not a snap on comb, it would make the cut much smoother also if you go against the grain of the hair leaves a smoother cut. There is no trick to cutting only the undercoat and not the top. it all gets cut. It's just the difference between done at home and professional. Bathing first and fluff drying giving you clean hair to cut will help alot too.

Hello, The reason a double coated dog, as the Aussie's are, look patchy when shaven is because the much thinner under coat grows faster than the main coat. The best thing to do is BRUSH, BRUSH, BRUSH, getting most of the undercoat out before you shave Trooper. It is then most likely not to occur & your dog does not look homeless lol. You my dear woman are GORGEOUS, VERY BEAUTIFUL.
@crystal522099 жыл бұрын
sorry this is idiotic lol I couldn't make it past the 3 min mark.... 1. shaving the top coat does NOT make the dog cooler........ 2. those clippers are for HUMAN HAIR 3. all you need to do to make them cooler is to get a de-shedding brush and brush out the undercoat. 4. shaving them does NOT help them cool off. Humans cool of by sweating and the sweat then evaporates and cools us. Dogs only sweat on their paw pads so shaving them does not help. the hair actually helps trap cool air under the fur and hold it there. If you take it off you leave the skin exposed to hotter air and sun for sunburn. Not to mention it USUALLY ruins the coat. Don't believe me? Look up how a dogs hair keeps it cool. Unless you're a groomer don't say "you're wrong" or "my dog feels so much better" because a groomer knows better and won't say those things.

You never shave a double coat! The topcoat protects the undercoat and the undercoat protects the skin and regulates their body temperature. Whether its hot or cold. So the undercoat acts like a filter. Brush and clean their coat and it will work properly to protect their skin and regulate body temperature. Shaving them messes up how their coat is supposed to function. So brush, bathe, brush some with it damp, dry really well and brush some more. At least every 4-6 weeks. It removes the dead hair, especially when their blowing their coat, keeps their undercoat “or filter” clean and mat free. You can do their sanitary area, pads, tweek the legs. Shaving them can ruin their coat and even make it come back thicker. This applies to all double coated dogs. Btw…..check out “go groomer” . She’s all about educating, especially pet owners who want to groom their own fur babies.

I personally wouldn't recommend shaving unless ur dog has certain issues like my dog. While shaving them won't overheat them, it can damage their skin really bad if they're outdoor dogs or outside a lot since their skin isn't made for that direct sunlight, it mostly depends on where u live and how long they're outside for. Plus, shaving doesn't always guarantee the fur to grow back the same, thier fur has water resist and cooling properties that aren't guaranteed to work the same if if cut it. Although one of my aussie had to be shaved bc he was attacked by a stray cat and got a skin infection all throughout his back and it had to be shaved. Now his fur refuses to grow back properly and its very patchy

Isn't it bad to shave a double coated breed? The coat could not grow back the same and the top coat keeps out sunlight. A dog without a top coat can become sun burned easily and the coat acts as an insulator to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I heard the best you can do is remove the shed and it helps with heat.

Thanks for watching and for commenting. Both dogs have always had successful haircuts (from a groomer), so I wasn't worried about them. I know problems can arise with some dogs. Their coats should keep them cool, but it's hard to argue with how playful/active/energetic they become when their hair is shaved short. With the removal of Trooper's hair, he seems to shed 5 years and acts like a puppy again.

There may be consequences of shaving a double coated breed, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. My 3-year old mini aussie gets shaved about every 3 months, and she loves it. She actually sits and lays calmly through the entire process. I live in southern Florida and even though the top coat prevents from sunburn and dogs don't sweat, she really loves the feel of the breeze when her hair is shorter. She is also not in the sun very often, so I don't worry about the sunburn.

I also have learned to shave a Shih Tzu from watching her and he had a double coat.

I have an aussie husky mix. My sister in law (A groomer at petsmart) says it's best if you bathe them first. This fluffs the hair and it's easier to cut. Also, the clipper should be against the grain of the hair (but keep the guard on to keep from cutting too deep) for max cutting. The lever on the side is for changing the blade so it can get through thicker hair. Another thing is to keep the clipper level and flat without angling it. Most of all just keep practicing, :) I learned how to groom my dog as well as a salon in abt 3 months. Plus having a long haired dog helps too.

Eek, you weren't kidding when you said you didn't care what they look like. LOL Try using a number 4, or at least a number 3. The key to an even clipper cut on a human is keeping the flat part of the guard flat with their head the whole time. I would assume that it would be similar with dogs. Don't dig into the coat make sure it's flat. Practice on a table or flat surface. I know this is your problem because I had this issue when I started doing hair. I went to a training class and the teacher recognized what I was doing wrong. Hope this helps and you get better cuts. :-)

You shouldnt shave an aussie at all. Maybe around their stomach and a bit of their back legs. In reality, you're not helping it by shaving it at all in texas. The guard hairs allow the undercoat to cool them and if you shave their coat at all, the guard hairs never grow back longer than the undercoat, therefore making their cooling system useless. But if you shave off their hair to 'fix that' they actually overheat and get sunburn.

You should never I repeat NEVER EVER SHAVE A DOUBLE COATED BREED! Do you're research before getting any dog breed. This is just horrible. So many people will watch this think it's okay. It's not okay to shave double coated breed
@BriannaMarley5 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't shave a double coated breed down to the skin. This video isn't depicting that. There's nothing wrong with properly shaving a double coat - do your research....
@lucynyu82265 жыл бұрын
@@BriannaMarley yes you should do you research. Because shaving double coated breed is one of the worst things you can do to their coat. You should brush them out not shave them because you're lazy. If you don't want to put in the time to properly take care of the dog. Get a breed without a double coat
@JennaBrianne5 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh. I’ve own several double coated dogs for most of my life. So I know how to care for them. Just an FYI. Veterinarians and groomers do this responsibily. Who exactly said you shouldn’t brush them out? Keyboard warrior, properly caring for a dog and doing what a professional recommends isn’t being lazy either, so don’t come with your bullshit throwing around accusations. And this video isn’t depicting what you’re accusing this person of doing. Yes, it’s irresponsible to shave a double coated breed, especially if that animal has become matted because of your lack of attention to it, yes it can be dangerous for them and affect their regrowth and overall health. That’s why you should seek guidance from professionals who knows what they’re doing. 🤯

And I’ve taken my dog to a groomer at my veterinarian, when he was shedding his winter coat - and they used clippers to help remove what the brush and blower wouldn’t.
@lucynyu82265 жыл бұрын
@@JennaBrianne I've been a professional groomer for over 15yrs. If dog has to be shaved due to matting then again owner is being lazy not properly taking of the dog. If dog is being groom properly no reason for dogs hair to mat up be shaved. Just because you owned few double coated breeds does not mean you did your research into how probably take of its coat. I've came across a lot of owners bring their double coated breeds in first thing most of them say is shave it. If not going take care of an animal right. Don't get one

how ca you do it to a crazy dog? My rescue dog is going psycho over anything. She is very suspicious too. Even vets are having hard time on her, they sedate her many times. I can't even clean her ears without her going crazy. She don't wanna give her paw too, and she don;'t like me cutting the hair between her pads of paw. She likes to be dirty and nasty because she use to be straying. I am giving up on her sometimes. That's another reason why it's hard to have a second hand dog. I mean it's easier if you raise then since babies. But I just want to give her a second chance and a better life.

Please find a proper owner for your dog. You are not an appropriate caretaker; not a failure on your side, but please allow someone the dog likes and is more skilled with have the privilege to care for this dog. It is "crazy" *because* of you.

You can very lightly TRIM! Your Aussie but if you’re actually shaving your Aussie then you should have them removed from your care!!! When you shave an Aussie you make them hotter the point is to DE-SHED as their guard hairs struggle to grow same speed as their undercoat chasing the Aussie to over heat in the summer!!! Wtf is wrong with you, ppl pls don’t shave your Aussie this is disgusting, it’s not beneficial ask any vet or owner this is just plain wrong and worse their fur never grows back as it once was. Their fur becomes so dense you or the Aussie at risk of over heating. Shame shame shame on you, poor baby needs her owner to be educated PROPERLY

No they won’t. I’ve shaved all mine for their whole life. Lived in Phoenix, New Mexico and central Oregon. Gets hot enough to heat up an animal in all those places.

Everyone is pushing this agenda how you should be charged for a crime if you buzz your Aussies hair. And when I say buzz I am talking about using clippers with a 3/4 inch attachment. People act like their google research is the word of god, and how aussies should never be buzzed. I believe their double coat is important for protection and thermodynamics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t alter its length to improve your dogs quality of life. Now I am open to change my mind if someone can show me the actual science to prove me wrong. I travel around the country so I have had a couple different vets I have seen, and each of them told me it was safe to use clippers on my Aussie, they did however say not to clip below half an inch, which is reasonable. I live in Florida right now , and when I take my dog to the groomer and they give the “standard Aussie cut,” which in my opinion is barely cutting any hair at all, when we go outside to run around and play in the field, she is only active for MAYBE 10 minutes before she is miserable and clawing to go back inside due to the heat. On the other hand, when I use my clippers and give her a fresh SHORT cut, when we go outside she is running around and playing in the field with me for nearly an hour before the heat finally starts to become too much (and we try to avoid direct sun as best as we can by staying closer to the tree line). In the summertime I take my dog outside to run around, play, and release all that Aussie energy for about one hour at a time, and I do this 2-3x/day. I take her once in the early morning, again when I get home from work, and then every night we go out before bedtime and I try to tire her out for a good 30 minutes at least. My dog functions 10x better with short hair compared to when it’s long, and I will continue to keep my dogs hair short as long as it keeps her healthy and happy. Now if someone has scientific evidence to back up the claim regarding the negative effects of using clippers on an Aussie, please send me that information so I can consider it. And when I say evidence please don’t send me random googled websites that have no real explanation regarding how and why cutting short ruins the coat, I want real scientific evidence cited from professional scientific organizations, or at least professionals educated in veterinary science. Please understand my post if friendly and I hope everyone can come together on this topic so we can all get accurate information for our Aussies!
