I personally think making each of these storage facilities at every major location like 5-10 locations around the map and have them all have the same setup and have your train basically carry the extra from all of them to all the others to make sure all of them are at Max capacity and then set up a final depot with the awesome sync basically taking care of all of the overflow all at once

I came here looking for a solution to my current sorting station. It covers what's being brought in to the factory by train: Iron ingots, copper ingots, bauxite, raw quartz, caterium, and sulfur. I have a dual layer Mk 5 system through smart splitters heading in to the respective storage containers, with a Mk 5 belt taking the items from storage in to the factory. I also have the 1,560 item per minute sort speed, but I have the issue of multiple items types causing a massive slowdown on item transfer through the splitters and mergers. Unloading a mixed load of Iron ingots, copper ingots, and caterium ingots can take several minutes. So long, in fact, that I often have to wait to unload when I come in with another load after it. My system is just as fast, but I was hoping I could find a system that would increase the sorting speed of multiple item types. I'll head back to the drawing board and see what I can come up with to split the sorting tasks up and increase speed.

at 2:55 it is not about not being sorted fast enough at all, its just that after setting one output to any and another to a specific product, from the point of view of the splitter it will behave just like a normal splitter , splitting in half the input of that specific product ( assuming 2 exits ) , that is why the any undefined work, it is not about speed, it is about blocking the flow of that product so it doesn't get split.

One suggestion.. when you start down the sorting line of smart splitters you have every single one go out to the overflow mergers. This is a LOT of extra work. Simply have all items continue on to the final smart splitter and then overflow at that point, saving yourself from having to build so many extra belts and mergers. This will also help with lag since you are streamlining the path of items in your build.
@Parkinwad
@Parkinwad 7 ай бұрын
The reason I didn't do it that way is that I wanted to see and separate out any items that weren't programmed on the splitters. In case items I wanted to keep ended up on the the shredder pile, the smart splitter wouldn't be programmed to send them to the shredder, and instead, they ended up in a container at the end of the splitter line. I could then check that container now and then, and pickup and/or plan for what to do with the unprogrammed items. It was mostly useful during the build phase of this. 🙂👍 Thanks for the comment and suggestion!

Auto sorting is absolute proof that you built your entire base wrong. I wrote a long rant then deleted it. Simply put, you never need an auto sorting system because it mean you will never come close to fully utilizing the rather slow speed of the max tier belt. That's why you don't see them in other peoples builds. Its not that they are difficult to do, they are simply never going to be more efficient than proper resource management and distribution.

Very similar to an idea I came up with. The biggest difference is mine has a way to individually process large quantities of single items into there storage containers by having a merger after the main belt sorting going into the storage. This keeps the main belt clear of any items that could potentially take large amounts of time to sort.

With the release of update 8 into the experimental branch, and thus the utility of liquid biofuel for jetpacks, this adds high utility for an "inventory stripper" in such designs. You just dump in your inventory after getting back from a big project, and the chain of smart and programmable splitters pulls out any unused construction materials and other useful things and sorts them accordingly, while returning everything else. This also lets you just go out, go ham with the chainsaw, and dump your inventory when you get back to process it all into liquid biofuel for your jetpack.

When I do massive (everything is relative) build projects, I will often empty containers worth of resources and pack them onto trains to keep near my build site. Obviously, not every resource needs massive amounts of extra mats lying around, but it's fun to do because you can. That's a good concept indeed, not so different from my own central storage, and a very good video, as any of your work. For me, i have one train station for 8 different storages, and trains feed two MK5 with one programmable splitter to route left or right the product. (ofc i had 8 train station on one side of my big factory, (80x60) 8 on the other side, so in the middle i can produce my stuffs) The downside, as you rightly said, are (for me) in the belts wich take away the overflows, it's very difficult to set the right amount of Sinks and try to use them at full speed anytime. i had also to said honestly, there's a lot of wonderful machines in the game, but the industrial storage, (wich is a fundamental part, probably the most fundamental part) with his dimensions and the double vertical input/output, force the design in any case to not so great solution about deal with input, output. I really like to have instead something with the inputs binded on a kind of cylinder, and when you set down the storage, like for the tower light, with the next click you will be able to choose from vertical layout to horizontal layout of the inputs/outputs. I suppose this will remain a dream :)

Nice setup, and original one. On my save, I use no sushi belt for my storage. I did choose to not use one because it replenish quantities slower than having a belts of each item ready to flow in the storage container. The downside is my belts foot print tho, which is far bigger than yours. I use 24 conveyor high each side for a total storage space of 48 items. It can be modified to get more if needed in a far futur (my project always takes lots of time). All my elevator are well organized and looks pretty cool. Right now I use only about 30 lines so i do not see the need to upgrade it yet... Im pretty happy with the result but it might be long to setup doing it this way and the room need to be large and pretty high as well since its 24 conveyor high.

I have a system in my save in which I have 6 belts going through my storage system. These 6 belts then have a similar smart splitter setup to yours, where before they reach their final destination, they're merged back onto 2 belts before going into their industrial storage container. This allows up to 2 full belts of throughput of any particular item (which, due to how my freight platforms unload, it doesn't allow more than that anyway, but up to 6 full belts of total sorting capacity! Since all 6 belts are sorted to the same item for each container, you can easily make additions to the sorting system without worrying about what freight platform it's coming from. It's a hybrid system, getting better space efficiency than having a dedicated line for each item, but also getting better throughput than limiting yourself to 2 belts for sorting.

Great blueprint but there is one negative thing: When you have the same item on two or more input lines the input lines will back up, because the sorted line will process the input lines with the same item alternately. Ignoring that its a great and expandable blueprint!

@@Parkinwad Yes, I was going to say the same thing. Despite all this work, you're still stuck with the same bottleneck as before and it will now clog up all those extra input lines you created. However, if you set the smart splitter to use "overflow" instead of "undefined", each input line won't back up when the sorted line backs up. You then only need to create enough overflow merge lines at the end to handle your max input rate - where each extra row has "any" set to the right and undefined for going forward (or just mergers if its the final extra row). Each of those rows could then be connected to a sink or sent elsewhere for further use. That would let you try and store as many input belts of items that you want.

It's necessary on a case by case basis. Not many people get far enough into the game to warrant building something like this, or even want to build something like this. The point of this was to show that if you needed a build like this, it's capable of being built, and, with blueprints, can be built in about 1/5 of the time it would have taken otherwise. It's actually easier to follow these rules: 1. Path Signals start a Path. 2. Block Signals End a Path. 3. Put a Block Signal at every Station Entrance and Exit. 4. Put a Path Signal only at every Junction Entrance (splitting rails). 5. Put a Block Signal at every Junction Exit in the direction that you want trains to go (merging rails). If you don't want trains going right in an intersection, don't put a block signal after the intersection in that direction. 6. The cul-de-sacs at each Branch End simply loop back to the Branch from which it came. I like to lay only 1 track for long distances. I do not do 2-lane highways. I have one central intersection where currently 4 legs branch off. North Branch goes to Bauxite Facility. West Branch goes to Oil Facility. East Branch goes to Black Powder & Compressed Coal Facility. (same recipe, so same building) Compressed Coal goes to the Oil Facility to produce Power (Currently at 2GW Production) and Black Powder goes to Oil Facility to produce Smokeless Powder. South Branch goes to both the Main Hub (Where I have a receiving depot that can only empty the trains on a Sushi Conveyer with 115 smart splitters into 115 Industrial Storages and overflows into a Sink) and the Iron Facility Hub which picks up every item that is produced using Iron (most recipes need iron, it's a busy facility that overflows into a Sink once the train depot is 100% full by using only dumb splitters so I get random items sent to Hub to ensure those storage bins fill). At this intersection, a Path Signal from each Branch at every rail split and a block signal at every rail merge. At the end of each Branch, the facility Train Stations, both a receiving station (with 4 cargo car depots because 1 engine pulls 4 cars, 2 engines can pull 8 cars) and a Shipping station. Each station has block signal at immediate entrance and immediate exit. Each rail intersection (whether merging or splitting) has a path signal at the split and block signal at the merge, from only the directions that the train is allowed (my cul-de-sacs are 1-way only). This method, in my instance, with 2 stations on the North Branch, 2 stations on the East Branch, 2 stations on the West Branch, and 3 stations on the South Branch (Hub + Iron Receiving & Shipping); can harbor a max of 24 trains (because there are 25 viable blocks of track [a couple sections are too short to hold an entire 5 (4 cars + 1 engine) length train]). I currently have only 1 cargo train and 1 engine that I can hop in to ride myself as needed and to prove concept that the signals are functioning. It works very well as I finish my hub to accommodate every Part (leaves, wood, iron ore, steel plate, motor, rotor, stator... you know. I'm being overly descriptive because of whiskey, it's Sunday. Get off my lawn!) I do hope this helps though. I'd make a video about it if my ancient pc could handle it. It can't. I have to play in a 800x600 windowed game on absolute lowest graphics settings because my GPU is a NVIDIA GT 620 and I am happy getting 12fps instead of the usual 7.

I have a similar setup. To solve the input cap, I made a separate auto sorted mass storage that has 2 output belts that leads to a smaller personal auto storage like the one shown here as well as sorted outputs for outgoing trains. For the mass storage, I used the two inputs of the larger storage box, 1input for flowing downstream to next bin (8 bin capacity per item) and one for input from the outside reapeat per storage bin to gain multiple input lines which will equal one line per bin added per item -1. Overflow upstream with smart splitters and mergers, hence the -1.

This is my strat as well. At the very end you can put a Programmable Splitter and set certain items to be belted off to a bespoke mini-factory for "improvement" (full on rotors and reinforced plates? yeet them into an assembler and make smart plating!) then returned to the main input for re-sortation. You get a gradual drip of extra components without needing to make a dedicated factory, and you also have more _valuable_ items eventually going into the sink.

Incorrect on both counts. 😉 entering each slip track is a block signal, and exiting is a path signal. This simple version also works fine with all block signals. The reason I used path signals here is to force the section of track after the slip track or siding track as it could be named, to stay clear for the opposing train if this system had more than one slip track. Id have to write a paragraph to fully explain it, but it stops deadlock by using a path signal on the exit. 🙂👍 Just remember, a path must always end in a block signal, no matter if it's one or 10 path signals chained together.

Check out the blueprint that I left for these in the description of the video. If you build it manually, unfortunately it is a lot of building the splitter, building the lift, building the top merger, then deleting and rebuilding the lift in order to get it to hook up to the merger up top. I had done this in the blueprint, then double checked them all to ensure they would all flow. 🙂 Not sure if your issue is specific to alignment with the programmable splitters or not.
