Hi Michael, was wondering, while watching you, and your fingers, and face, are these known pieces, or are there patterns, or a structure you then improvise around, or do you just "go". If you just "go", do you "hear" where you want to go next? Or do you see it, or do you just let your fingers "go". Is there any way you can try and explain what your process is? So keen to know what's in your mind as you play and construct, it amazes me more than I can say.

Hey Glen! I believe there are many different ways to play an instrument. It always felt wrong to me to play the melodies of others, even if you can impress or be of service to your audience this way. To me it feels like I’m not being myself but rather use something like a costume (composition) of someone else. I feel a deep desire to explore and express myself. That’s why I do my own thing. I like to call it free play. You could call it a light version of composition on the fly. I don’t like the word improvisation a lot, as I feel that for a majority of musicians this means to move given patterns or scales up and down, which is not very inventive. I admit there’s a good percentage of patterns in my playing as well. I play very simplistic. I like to remind myself that I’m somewhere at a musical language level of a five year old. I desire to grow. Maybe one day I’ll be able to play like a 10 or even 16 year old can talk. When I play it’s a mixture of left and right brain activity. It’s the same process you would compose music, but as mentioned above, on the fly. In order to not play complete nonsense, I try to rather stay in save waters with my capabilities and willingness to take risks and experiments in those longer sessions. Mostly I imagine with what energy I want to fill the space first. The result will be shaped by what you experienced and lived through in life for sure. Plus your skills and knowledge in music and with the instrument. There are a couple motifs that I currently seem to use often which can be blamed on muscle and brain memory and me allowing myself to not think too hard at times while playing. When I focus more I might think of the next few notes, where I want to land with the lead melody, if there is one. Other times I focus on chords. Other times on rhythmic elements. I try to remind myself of the energy I want to fill the space with. I think of you, the audience sometimes, what situation you might be in, how the music could fit in gently, not being demanding, rather being supportive. Sometimes I allow my subconscious to take over parts of playing. It’s a mix of many elements. Thank you for making me think a bit about it. Takeaway for me is that I’d love to grow a little more as a musician in the coming years. Thank you for being here, Glen ☀️🤗

Is this ad free while playing?😊
@relaxdaily2 күн бұрын
I hope so. YT requires ads at the beginning and at the end of long videos. That’s fair. The service comes a price, as people are working hard to keep it up, and creators are being rewarded this way, too. Ads are the economic motor that makes a lot possible here. But ads in the middle of such a session would break apart what I want to accomplish with this project. At least for now, with these longer piano sessions.

Is it normal if my piano sound is delayed? Like if you push too soft sound doesn’t come out? It’s acoustic btw
@relaxdailyКүн бұрын
When you push very gently and no sound comes, then the key didn’t release the hammer, or not far enough to hit the string. Or with digital instruments a simulation of this behavior. Has to do with the design of the piano action. Maybe open yours so you can see the action, press a key very softly, see, understand.

You wrote these? If not what’s the song names?
@relaxdailyКүн бұрын
No individual song names. I called the whole session ‘Values List’ and it’s me playing freely from heart and soul, a light composition on the fly.

Hi Alison! Good to hear from you. Thank you for your super kind words again! Still dealing with an injury from my too ambitious trail running training last year.
