FYI as a second option. I installed a small check valve just north of the end that takes all the spark plug fittings. Crack pressure on the check valve is one bar and is the same diameter as the hose. You ID the problem with a Schrader valve… it won’t seal due to a lower taper and it needs a low crack pressure. Good video.

I’m hoping to experience that joy of my 78 dt starting! Haha. I have spark, fuel, compression reads 60psi… and air. Still not firing. Any suggestions?
@FlyingScot
@FlyingScot Ай бұрын
Compression is really low. With new piston and rings I got 120psi. You really need around a 100 to run effectively. Id start getting the compression up. Make sure you are using a compression tester that has a Schrader valve located at the plug end and not the dial end to get the correct reading. I had the harbor freight tester which wasn't reading right. I have a video on that in my channel.

I have been a passenger in the 172 and 182 many times and my first thought was I'm flying in an old VW at 3,000 ft. (technology is about the same) I have also driven many older vehicles, dating back to 1928, so understand that it's mostly about keeping after the maintenance. Bells, whistles, and computers don't keep these in the air. The laws of physics do that, but only if you keep after stuff.

Fantastic! I was made aware of your videos by Kevin Shelley (CountryHouseGent) as you commented about being in Durness around the time he was. I used to spend my vacations near Durness at Portnacon in the 90s and early noughties and have played golf overlooking Balnakeil Beach and fished from Sango Sands (One day I caught 3 lemon sole, caught with lugworm dug up on Bettyhill beach earlier in the morning, which my landlady cooked for me!). My 13 year old daughter also fished with me spending 3 hours up to her knees in the North Atlantic but didn't catch a thing!) I haven't been up there for quite a few years now, so it was fabulous to see Ullapool, Kylescue, Ben Arkle etc, Kinlochbervie and Cape Wrath again. I got the ferry and minbus to the Cape and walked with my daughter down to Sandwood Bay before walking back to get the minibus back. The ferryman said he could only take 12 in the boat as that was the maximum number he was insured to drown! He also told us the midges often forced him to stick his head in the Kyle 🤣 I drove around the Drumbeg Loop and took the ferry to Handa Island on other trips up. I would never have been able to walk the trail as you have so it's been areal privilege to be taken along. Thank you Iain. I'm assuming the next vlog will cover Durness so am looking forward to seeing it. I enjoyed wandering through Smoo Cave and have played Pool in the Smoo Cave Hotel.

Wow...you had great adventures there John and memories with your daughter. I love it up there. I never managed to see Smoo Cave but I will go back for that for sure. I had the best weather on 2 occasions to see the area at its best for sure. I can imagine in winter it's an entirely different place! As a kid I spent my time in the Gairloch area on holidays fishing off the beach for sole with the long beach casting wooden rods and also digging up lug worms and razor clams. Fun times!

Dear Ian, I appreciate your valuable recommendations, thank you so much. My goal is to complete it by mid-May next year. I will be 65 as well! I have experience hiking long distances in the Alps (max 40 days). But I have no experience in Scotland and I am concerned about all that water! I am completely in agreement with you regarding Gortex, and that is why boots today are free of Gortex. But it means that we get wet if we walk on water, which is usually okay in the Alps in summer. What about Scotland? It is my understanding that some socks are impermeable. What are the best boots to wear?
@FlyingScot
@FlyingScot 3 ай бұрын
Some people wear waterproof socks but I prefer to let my feet breathe. Darn Tough socks are great and last well. Boots are a personal preference but I believe for this trail they are a must for ankle support over the rocky terrain. Scarpa boots would be my next choice. Also, gaiters are a must. They keep out the ticks and are marvellous for keeping out the water even when crossing rivers. I took a pair of paddle board neoprene shoes for when I needed to wade. You will love it!

Hi iain. Wonderful start to the episode, great weather and a good path. I remember the boathouse and that cool camp spot. We tried to camp by the beach where you took a dip but couldnt get the pegs in securely so went higher which had other problems. Stunning views on day two. Thanks for the mention. I think the perceived length of the track to or from glendhu depends on the weather and you had unrelenting heat like us which seems to add to the length. In my opinion glendhu is a better bothy to stay in than glencoul which you pass tomorrow. The guy with the ticks , well i found the path between glendhu and glencoul to be infested with ticks, so many landed on us but with long trousers and gaters we were ok.
