I have almost every mainline Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons game except the GB/GBC games, Tree of Tranquility, Island of Happiness, and Pioneers of Olive Town (because it sucks).

i started in ps1 and gba was best back to nature then i switch to the rune factorys.

Well those early games were both Mario & DK(And DK jr) together.. Thus they all should receive the credit.. And if SMB had DK as the villain it’d been just as successful maybe even more so.. I love both characters about equally tbh I really like it when they’re enemies tho.. Maybe they should have a game where you play on both sides.. That’d be different.. Like a mashup.. I’d have to say the peak was SNES.. That system was perhaps the pinnacle as far as platformers in general.. I’m hoping for DK World up next.. Followed by DK Universe!

Looking at the GBA and noticing that it has an issue with being able to see it unless you have direct sunlight and then turning that into a game mechanic is genius. You can play Baktai today if you have a way to write GBA carts. Aliexpress sells rewritable carts with a light sensor. You can either use a dedicated writer or if you have an Nintendo DS Lite with a suplorted flashcards there is NDS homebrew that can write to carts (burn2slot)

If I had to guess why this never made it to America: the RIAA and MPAA probably had a fit about it. They can get licensing fees off of every GBAvideo cartridge, but you could fill your Nintendo MP3 player with pirated songs from the napster or limewires in 2005! I remember them really hating MP3 players for the longest time.

I really miss having handhelds that are not back lit. I think the front light on the SP is the way to go. Even with phone technology today, you have to crank your brightness to the max to MAYBE be able to see your screen on a sunny day. But I could carry and play my gameboy ANYWHERE and be able to see it.

Personally I would love Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye 007, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark or Super Smash Bros to be remade, Goldeneye has legal issues, Rare will probably never remake of Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie, Conker or Perfect Dark, Paper Mario is probably the only one I would believe Nintendo would consider remaking, but again with all these games I would love to have a remake are wishful thinking, one can only dream !

18:10 The GBA WAS designed to be played outdoors or with higher ambient light conditions! Instead of a backlight, the back of the display has a pretty good reflector, which made the screen wonderful to use in brightly lit display kiosks and outdoors, but a complete pain anywhere else. The tradeoff is that you can't put a backlight on it because the reflector is there, so the SP looked a lot worse outdoors in comparison. Edit after viewing the rest: The more restrictive the hardware, the more creative the teams behind it seem to have been. Creativity in AAA titles from the 90s and 00s cannot compare to creativity in AAA titles in the 2020s. Part of this is because everything has already been done, and studios are clamping down on creativity in favor of guaranteed sales from old ideas, but I think the excessive console power and developer budget has let a lot of studios get sloppy or lazy. Indies are thriving in originality partly because of the restrictive schedules or budgets they have, sometimes it's a single person working in their spare time to make something they love and they have to find a good way around a roadblock.

re: the play-yan - I used to actually leave my gba sp idle in a game just to listen to the soundtracks, pretending I had an mp3 player. to find out the actual mp3 functionality existed but wasn't available in the U.S.... a worse experience for all of us for no good reason. thanks Nintendo. I like the idea of the franchise opening up this way. As a kid, it was inspiring and cool to see...but probably only in theory. I never actually played the game as a kid. When I finally did, it was dated and flat. But it still has that Rare irreverence, which I love.

The GBA was released at what would be known as the perfect time for video game innovation using old technology in different ways. Perhaps inspired by the late Gunpei Yokoi and what he did on the original GameBoy as well as the Game and Watch earlier.

well actually in that time of its release, (i owned one), its tech was on the level of a SNES but it was pocket sized, and there wasnt really much else that offered the same graphics for that size

Some love for the GBA. I also think that with all the games that added these things during the GBA some how convinced Nintendo to add then to the system itself, that way it would be easier for Nintendo and other Third Parties to make the games they want. Sadly now a days seems that most games from the end of the 3DS era and especially the switch just never bothered to add an extra something. There are so many times when I used to play the 3DS I felt a game could had use motion controls, touch screen or the mic but never used them.
