Can you put ¾ foamboard between purloins, ice and water at eaves and valleys and tack felt over everything? Any leak that did occur would stay above purloins and run out. I am considering stuffing a piece of dura vent in the ribs only on the bottom. Let the steel breathe a bit And let any moisture out

I still like screwing on the ribs, those 2-3 cent washers will not last forever, and will leak more in the low part vs. the rib. I predrill the panels on the ground with a sharp bit.

Open metal lined valleys......always!!! Shingles in valleys get 50x the wear of surrounding roof shingles due to the funnel effect.

Wow thanks for that video, I was about to return my metal flashing and get the rubber boot for my chimney (insulated). A big question tho is that I am wondering if it would be possible to do this WITHOUT taking the 'upper' sheet off. My roof is already tinned so I would punch a hole into the center of the flue (with appropriate gaps), lengthen the cut downwards all the way to the bottom edge of the roof (only like 5ft - the chimney exits near the bottom of the roof pane). This would looks like a long U shaped cut. Then I would frame from accordingly to be able to screw the flashing down at the end. I would then slide the flashing under this top sheet along the u shaped opening (with caulk between the bottom of the flashing and on top of it), then slide another piece of tin from the bottom of the cut up to the flashing (under it) - also with a u shaped slot but inverted. I think it's possible but I would like to hear from you. Thanks a lot - you're clearly the best in the bizz :)

I have no roofing experience, but, apprehensive as I was to touch the roof, this video did make it look simple, so I actually went ahead and replaced a couple of damaged shingles today. This kind of work can be pretty rough on your hands, so gloves are always helpful. Thank you for the great video!

Any advice on flashing tips for clapboard next to a brick chimney? The wavy clapboard I guess I could put in vertical flashing and just leave the the siding style has. I'm not sure how to stick a metal flashing in the area between the siding and bricks. The siding is degrading and one board even has a hole right next to the bricks where the two touch.

so I will tell you this from experience. Manufactures want you to screw on the flat for 2 reasons. It is easier to get a proper layment of the panel and they want to sell their newer more expensive products. If you are experienced enough you can place the screws properly on the rib and this is the best way to go for many reasons. As he stated the roof flexes and moves. with the screws on the rib it allows the roof to flex. On the flat it causes far more resistance to flex and will cause the screws to either back out. damage the washers or even break the screw heads off. When going through the rib I use 2 inch screws to solve the issues he demonstrated. when on the rib pre drilling helps prevent problems. If you have a faulty screw on the rib will leak 99 percent less than a faulty screw on the flat. I predrill only on the laps and trim pieces. I started putting through the roof on the threads of the screws just after they penetrate the metal. Do this right and your screws will remain water tight for over 60 years,,, do it on the flat and I can guarantee you are replacing most of them in under 20 years. Also never install exposed fastener panels without purlins except in buildings that are not heated. NEVER. I have repaired so many roofs that were screwed on the flat....

Thanks! No one has ever fully explained the slight deviation in nailing distance in the field nails (1, skip a bit, 2, 3, 4) as your slow video pace. I can clearly see that you are creating a nail free zone over which rainwater will flow from the joints in the next course above. One quick question: another video creator noted that the plastic strip on the glue/tar strips doesn’t need to be removed, because it “just goes away” and the shingles seal on a warm day. But I’ve seen that plastic still there on the old roof is tore off. So, does the adhesive seep through/around the strips? Or is that strip really expected to “go away?” Thanks again for your clear videos. Daniel

My dad put metal roof over shingles on his house many years ago. He just put them directly on them. He was told that if he removed his shingles he would hear every rain drop that fell on the metal roof when it rained. Quieter with the old roof still there to deaden the sound. One thing I know for certain, it was much easier to keep his house cool in the hot summers here. Gets up to 100 to 110 in July/August here. That metal roof certainly kept the shingles cooler.

Love your videos but why is a closure strip or another means not used to prevent wind driven rain under that flashing? it seems like its more vulnerable than simply joining the two panels?

There is a foam piece that matches the metal contour. Has a self adhesive backing. Some installers won't bother with this on steeper pitched roofing but I always do this. Did roofing 6 years with architectural shingles but always trying to learn more on other installation techniques.

How do you add foam closure strips if you aren’t screwing through the valley flashing? These install instructions seem to differ from most panel manufacturer install instructions in that regard We have found the foam closure strips a bit difficult to work with, I’d love a video showing how you apply these (and sealant) when you’re installing panels.

Dude when you get up to the top all you have to do is just take a roll of felt and lay it to where it's even with the ridge on the edge That way when you get up to the bottom of the felt you're at the right angle and you can completely use the lines and go off of that going all the way up super simple it's not rocket science
@GirthDepthcheck
@GirthDepthcheck 2 ай бұрын
That way you don't have a disappearing course going up the valley and just know if you just lay your felt straight you can go off the felt lines you're never going to be crooked really if you need to eyeball it a little bit
@GirthDepthcheck
@GirthDepthcheck 2 ай бұрын
Or just go over to shingles and then lay those and if they don't tea then you know you're straight anyway in the valley
