Ora Ora...

Maybe I've watched too many of Julian Baumgartner's videos, but I was taken aback to see the painting being cleaned and varnish removed before any attempt was made to repair/stabilise the damaged sections. And couldn't understand why such a large brush was used for retouching. Seemed very clumsy.

As professional art restorer i can assure you that what you see in this performance is the high level of professional restoration! I was surprised first too. But when i watched more closely I realized that the paint layer was very stable. And didn’t need an additional protection. All cracks were on the varnish layer. You can see it clearly after master Eduardo cleaned painting. No loose paint. Damages were done to canvas only. Besides, brush is perfectly pointed! The rest, like a size of a brush is just a matter of habit and skill level. 😊

When you work on this painting, who do you wonder more about, the sitter or the artist?? Very nice work!

Thank you for your interesting question. Some time ago, when I first worked on this painting, I placed a lot of emphasis on the sitter. We believe it is a portrait of Marshal Saint Arnaud, a French general. However, in this video, I decided to shed some light on the artist who painted it. Now that I read your question, perhaps it would have been a good idea to also talk about the Marshal in this video. Thank you again for your question, and have a Merry Christmas!

I also want to note that your videography, editing, storytelling, and presence have continued to grow over the years. As I told another content creator, I enjoy watching experts do the job they love. Caring for old artwork is definitely something you love, and I love being in your studio with you. Thanks for being here, Eduardo.

I follow three restorers on YT and I do so because of the amazing detailed and careful work done on these works of art. You are one of them. I like the way you take us through the process, explaining it to us clearly and concisely. Thank you. Might I make a suggestion? Sometimes the way you position the camera creates a bit of glare, which makes it difficult for us to see better your work. Perhaps, a change in the camera's position would help? Thanks again for the pleasure you offer us with your work.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for including me among the restorers you follow-that truly means a lot to me! I’m so glad you enjoy the detailed work and the way I explain the restoration process.😊 Your suggestion about the camera positioning is very much appreciated. I’ll definitely take it into account and work on reducing glare in future videos to improve the viewing experience. At the time I took these images, I didn’t really know how to work with the camera very well. Although I still have some difficulties now, I will definitely try to improve.😊Your feedback is invaluable, and it helps me keep improving. Thank you again for your support and for sharing this journey with me

The sides of the original antique frames were rarely gilded. They were painted with an ochre or sepia paint - less expensive than the gold leaf, and this would have been the norm… Air-drying clay is easier to use in your silicon mold - than fiddling about with plaster or gesso. It holds the detail beautifully, trims easily and sits down nicely within the gaps. The “under paint” is BOLE - a form of diluted clay which can be red, yellow, blue or black. It’s applied warm, and provides the deep tones underneath the gold leaves when burnished. Shellac? Nope. A light rub with beeswax is a more natural substance to offer a bit of protection to your completed work.

Using washi kozo paper is the first step to protecting this painting, but using bees wax in the 'stabilization' foundation sounds counter-productive to me! At some time in many years to come, when this painting comes back up for cleaning and possible restoration work, how on this Earth will that bees wax-resin backing be removed from the painting, if it's been melted and then ironed into the original canvas?!
@libraryBDL

Agreed. I, too, wondered about that wax application. Sometimes the 'old way' isn't always the best.

First time on this channel, i enjoyed a lot, it was a great work!! I don't know if it might help, you commented about the brushes and you can find nail art brushes that are EXTREMELY thin, you might find them with good quality, and (from my experience) is easier to find than looking for ultra thin "regular" brushes
