Very good information. What environment do you feel UCP works the best in? I agree with you that I really dislike the bright colors so many people wear in the field. "All that unnatural color spoils the view for other people." I wish more people would realize this.

@@Billofthenorth1 Today in South Carolina, we had a tease of snow and freezing rain. First time of snow since 2014. Took the UCP out to see what it would look like. I see what you mean. It does indeed blend well with a little bit of snow, mixed with brown and green. Actually, it looks really good. Sadly, this type of weather is very rare here. If I lived up North, I would not change a thing with the pattern.

When the filbe is set up properly it beats out everything as a large military ruck. The molle ii waistbelt doesnt fully transfer the load & it digs into your hips, and the 1000D fabric makes the pack needlessly heavy, rough, & rigid.

I got one about 30 years ago and still have it. It is used when canoe camping. Two things I found to my disliking , 1... Spreader bar hammocks will dump your rear on the ground if you are not careful ( off center ). That is normal with spreader bar hammocks , all of them. After more then 60 years of hammock camping I should of remembered that. 2nd ... The rain fly cut off any visibility of the outside world. That can be avoided by using a separate , standard , tarp type , rain fly over the hammock. Backpacking I use a regular ( non spreader bar ) Jungle hammock since they pack smaller and are lighter. Plus I can lay on the diagonal in them with good visibility and ventilation.

Thanks for sharing! It's really neat what some spray paint can do for you. Someday I bought a set of twelve different subdued colors on ebay. Did all kinds of gear in camo patterns. It´s fun! Because your thoughts adapting the camo net better for winter time... using white or light color stripes of fabric and weave them in the netting. At the perimeter would it be nice to break up the straight lines. Can´t tell how good it works, but it´s an idea. Regards Torsten

That esbit set also exists in a stainless steel version - also there's a lighter set lacking the "lid pan" and instead having a flat "lid" piece with a small d-ring handle and a "T"-shaped hook on the inside so one can rest it on the side of the pot/cup part. I managed to grab that small set in the anodized aluminum variation on a flea market for 4€ including two boxes of solid fuel esbit tablets. Price wise that version retails for 30-40€ originally, the stainless steel version going for even more. I haven't tested it yet, but am super lucky having found that bargain deal. I have the MOLLE sustainment pouch as well as the FILBE hydration pouch. But I’ve not purchased the FILBE sustainment pouch because I assumed it would just be a redundancy. Now I know it actually has its own design merits that set it apart. So thank you for pointing that out.

I guess when you have an active batch of dye it works much better. I was tired of dyeing everything green though, so went with the brown for a less military look.

Thanks for the video. If you like the becket hitch, you may be able to save even more weight by switching to the Dutchware spider web 1.5 straps. If you like to use the daisy chain strap, you could get 5, 6, or 7 foot spider web 1.5 tree huggers (loops on both ends) for the tree half of your suspension and connect those to your original daisy chain straps. This would be even lighter than an entire length of daisy chain straps and you don't really need the daisy chain portion for the tree. I'm doing this now, using a soft shackle instead of carabiner to connect the hammock to the daisy strap. No knots and no hardware, which I personally like.
@Billofthenorth1
@Billofthenorth1 10 ай бұрын
I found the Becket hitch slipped too much with this set up so I now use cinch buckles with huggers and biners. I do still keep the daisy loops around in cases I need to wrap around a large anchor like thick trees or rocks.
