I use both phone and a single map marker shaped cardboard cutout with the pointed end at 0 degrees of a 0 to 360 deg dial. This marker points in direction of travel. The shadow stays in "same place for about an hour". PHONE IS KEPT OFF (OR JUST SCREEN OFF) THEN PHONE RECALCULATES SHADOW AZIMUTH REQUIRED. I CORRECT TRAVEL DIRECTION IN THIS MANNER EVERY HOUR. THANKS DAVID CANTERBURY FOR WOODSMITH SIMPLE COMPASS ON KZbin. I use a hybrid approach in order to keep phone battery charged as long as possible. I live in the cell phone era. My education was electronics and I dont share Joe Soaps "BUT PHONES BREAK BATTERIES GO FLAT" worries. I buy cheap phones where batteries can be replaced. I buy more than 1 phone and multiple batteries. AND HEY, I AM PROBABLY OLDER THAN YOU THAT IS READING THIS ! I AM RETIRED. WHAT A GREAT TIME TO THINK AND CREATE !

Alice is rugged for sure and can be comfortable with modded suspension. I've not had any of my molle frames break yet, I don't load my packs heavily. One of my filbe frames arrived cracked but it's wired up and still works. I ordered another filbe rig and it arrived with the newer stronger frame. Haven't used it much yet but I won't be loading that up either so fingers crossed it holds up.

Do you think the Filbe waist belt would work w molle or Alice frame?
@Billofthenorth12 ай бұрын
I haven't tried it, but it probably would. The MOLLE belt attaches with four straps. The FILBE has a fifth one and a pad. Unless that pad gets in the way or makes an uncomfortable lump in the small of the back, I think it will work.

I was curious if the FILBE would take the dye at all. I had tossed a couple of hydration pouches in a used up batch of dye a couple years back and they got slightly tinted green. I guess when you have an active batch of dye it works much better. I was tired of dyeing everything green though, so went with the brown for a less military look.

Thanks for the video. If you like the becket hitch, you may be able to save even more weight by switching to the Dutchware spider web 1.5 straps. If you like to use the daisy chain strap, you could get 5, 6, or 7 foot spider web 1.5 tree huggers (loops on both ends) for the tree half of your suspension and connect those to your original daisy chain straps. This would be even lighter than an entire length of daisy chain straps and you don't really need the daisy chain portion for the tree. I'm doing this now, using a soft shackle instead of carabiner to connect the hammock to the daisy strap. No knots and no hardware, which I personally like.
@Billofthenorth14 ай бұрын
I found the Becket hitch slipped too much with this set up so I now use cinch buckles with huggers and biners. I do still keep the daisy loops around in cases I need to wrap around a large anchor like thick trees or rocks.

Hey buddy, the color comes from an anodized layer on the titanium which simply reflects light and gives it a colored hue based on the thickness of the anodized coating. It’s an oxide layer formed on the titanium with electrochemical processing in the factory. The coating is completely inert, meaning just as body-safe as titanium itself. The blotchiness is not color flaking off at all, rather it is oil or other contaminants simply smudging the oxide layer so light can’t reflect through as easily and affects how the blue hue looks - sort of like smudges on glass distorting a light source. Basically, It’s metal science and a colorful illusion to our eyes. If the cup isn’t sparkling clean, the hue will be inconsistent as you found out. But it’s impossible to consume the color into your body so you are totally safe!

I sent an email to Davis, including photos, and got no response. I sent it again and was told that customer service would respond. The answer came after I insisted, once again, and was "we don't have stock of this part. I asked for more information and no answer. They totally ignored me. So, a serious company is one that cares about the customer and this was not the Davis case with me.

I needed to replace one part of the buckle and had the extra pieces left over from the kit. I usually try to bring a spare buckle or something to keep the pack functional in case of damage and that side adjuster piece looks like it can cover two different repairs, so saves room and weight.

Hello, I don't know if the problem with the load lifters is still relevant for you, but I have a solution. It would probably help to attach the entire shoulder strap panel (the one that attaches to the frame, with the pads inside that rest against your back when you're carrying the backpack) a little lower on the frame. Placed one or two slots lower, it lifts the frame completely higher over your shoulder when carrying the backpack. This should then give the load lifters more chance to function. Greetings Torsten
@ozzybwild6 ай бұрын
First of all I want to mention that I keep seeing your name on a lot of videos about backpacks that I go through, kudos. As an addition I want to mention that in case the waist belt sits too high after your solution for the load lifters, it can make sense to turn it upside down. That way the belt sits a bit lower and also "grabs" onto the hips better. Regards from germany, oz.

@@Billofthenorth1 Hello, yes I understand. For me too, at first I only had a MOLLE hip belt for my FILBE. Here in Germany, things from the USMC in particular are difficult to find. But one day I got lucky and got a brand new FILBE hip belt on eBay. I think the biggest difference is the block in the middle of the back on the FILBE hip belt. My understanding is that the block provides load transfer to the frame. This limits the bending of the frame in the lower area and protects against cracks. That might be the biggest difference. At least that's what I think.

Nice one. I used a set of triglides on one set-up and a pair of ladderlocks on another, attached to a set of straps, to secure to the ladderllocks present on the shoulder harness in order to be able to make use of the load lifters on the MOLLE ii yoke. Also, it now stays nicely in place

The American Nautical Almanac's sight reduction procedure is so ugly that almost no one ever gets it figured out. It is disregarded even more than the US "Sight Reduction Tables for Marine Navigation." "Sight Reduction Tables for Air Navigation" has been in favor since the 1950s. The earlier "Tables of Computed Altitude and Azimuth" are excellent--they just don't produce heights below 5°. The narrator of this video makes a valiant effort to demonstrate the Almanac's EZ Method, but what he has to work with would baffle Bowditch. Those who can't follow: don't give up. Just use the Almanac's daily pages, and its information about corrections for eye height, refraction, semidiameter, and parallax. I usually avoid tables that combine corrections.
@ozzybwild7 ай бұрын
I know I'm super late, but leaving this info anyway. The regular shoulder straps have the fasteners sewed in upside down, so that's the way you have to use them. On the LC2 improved straps they are mounted "right side up", since they are not sewn in and you CAN place them right side up to be able to pull on the protruding webbing to tighten them up while wearing the pack, and why wouldn't you mount it that way if you can? (Every youtube video I saw about them canonically has people speaking about how they are mounted "right side up" unlike all the other models as well..) That being said I eventually will mount mine upside down as well using my sewing machine to sew them in. I can always cut the seam to repair if needed anyways. After all I am very sceptical about that loop connection of the webbings. The reason to sew them upside down is because you have to fiddle the non-buckle part through the pack (and frame eventually) and it's more practical having that end loose while the fastener stays in place.
