The best example for teaching the truth to a devout JW is to have the attitude that Jesus had when he told Nicodemus "You must be born again." After he explained what he meant by being born again he then told Nicodemus "You are a great teacher to the Jews and you don't know these things?" Nicodemus must have been converted because he helped Joseph of Aramathea carry Jesus' body to the tomb.

The sheltering done is so emotionally handicapping to the children. My daughter was so happy when me and her elder dad devorced when she was twelve. He was so controlling and mean. We had such a bright new life together of experiencing freedom and not feel guilty. I gave her freedoms within reason and let her be in pageants and take gymnastics. We still discussed Biblical words in making decisions. She is a gorgeous forty one year old successful hair designer that makes six figures yearly. We are very close and she discusses life's struggles with me and does her daily text and prays.

Oh, I had my dad handcuffed and led out of the house when my baby Brother called so terrified when he was threatening to kill them. Through this ordeal, what did the elders do? Counseled them to work things out...smh. I told mom she had to leave for their safety. She was so emotionally beat down. Just so thankful we wised up to everything.

Yep, I relate to your story. I married my ex husband at eighteen and he was SO controlling. I too could not leave the home while he was working. I felt so scared . The elders NEVER listened to your story of abuse. You were expected to be in submission and make it work. My Father abused my mother and she wanted to leave, but the elders told her that her Godly resposibility was too make the marraige work. He was severley mentally ill and evil. He beat my brothers so bad for nothing. Held a gun to my moms head more times than one. It was a horrible segment of our lives. We are free now. I feel so close to God and my Savior Hesus Christ. I hate so many precious years were lost, but it grew me, my children and my mom.

What compounds the abuse/confusion is when the victim is asked or accused of “enjoying” the abuse. It’s like a hungry person who was given a delicious meal laced with tasteless/odorless poison. As they suffer from the poisoning, being accused of being hungry and enjoying the meal! And there is an example of this. If you knew your deadline was coming you should have been prepared with a camera to document the exchange...and GET IT DONE. This was a good...really good interview. I like this guy...(I'm still cautious) but I like him. He knows and I like that Vevian is saying what she likes...she's address the anger in the EXJW space...the judgemental behavior that we all walked out of the JW's with.

I'm a former JW. I was falsely ACCUSED of things like this when I was 8 years old by an aunt. Suffice to say that I know I have a large BIAS when women make accusation. For the first 11 mins I was starting think the Elders were right but I'm glad I continued to listen because you started revealing things that didn't make you look favorable in the situations. When you said, "I didn't know how to SAY NO.", when you said, "I have a narcists mother", the psychological pieces began to fall into place. Many men DON'T listen all the way through. We form opinions in the first 3 minutes and do nothing to try and dispel that prejudgment. (That's why Police relations with the public are SO BAD) This is the same problem. We assume a that an extremely sheltered child (like many Jehovah's Witness are, understand how to say NO, and are empowered to say no. Saying no has to come with benefits because I personally believe you can never mean yes if you can't say no. Building confidence in women in this way is just not done in the JW's organization. They are ill equipped to listen, understand and anticipate the needs of women (not because they are men) but because they choose not to expand their perspective of the female plight under what they call "subservience".
