My 0 waste habit people find weird is my hand laundry washer. Which is a big bucket and a plunger. I fill the bucket with hot soapy water and use the plunger to wash. A plunger that has never touched a toilet ever since it was made btw. People still think its dirty somehow to take a brand new plunger off store shelves that has never touched a toilet or anything toilet related and use it for something other than toilets.

I also have a laundry stick for pollen season to smack all my clothes with real good before I bring them in from the line which might be seen as weird

If you buy new one, don't buy one with lights build in. This makes it really hard to recycle and it uses rare materials. Lights can almost always be found second hand. Electronics can cause big problems in the waste sector. It has potential to blow up, which is dangerous and also destroys the machines that help us manage our waste. So always dispose of them seperately, so they aren't being crushed in the garbage truck and cause problems. Also if you have a real christmas tree make sure to water it and preferably buy one with roots. This massivly decreases the chances of it catching on fire and even when it does it burns much slower giving you, your loved ones and your house more chances of surviving.

I don't even have a tree..... I just make an outline of one with string lights on the wall. I have a cat and anyone who has a cat knows how much the cat is out to take down the tree.....

I grew up in WA State where Christmas tree farms are abundant. Every year we went to the local u-cut tree farm and to get our tree. It's similar experience to going to a pumpkin patch in fall. The tree farm we went to had several sections of different tree varieties. You could pick from douglas, noble, spruce and several other varieties. You could see the samplings and you tree interspersed with the harvestable trees. stumps usually had 2-3 samplings growing nearby. These operations were always family owned and operated by locals and not commercial enterprises.

I just stumbled upon this video and I actually do some of these hinges and never thought they were weird- just part of my sustainability journey. We use crystal deodorant (have for 2-3 years), and we’ve been happy with how well it works and how long the crystal lasts. We love bidets (also introduced to them when we lived in Okinawa, Japan). My daughter and I use reusable period pads/underwear. We use mason jars for glasses and food storage. I don’t wash my comforter often. I also re-wear clothes several times before washing (within reason). And I’m from Spokane, but live on the west side now.

Also, we purchased a pack of white washcloths and use those instead of paper towels. We have paper napkins from takeout for the kind of messes you don’t want to wash

Such a great in-depth vid on a topic that’s often hard to research! I agree that trees aren’t essential at home, we nearly all have one in the centre of our towns that’s way bigger than what we can have at home, we should be spending more time in those spaces too. Also "retired Christmas tree" 🤣 why am I picturing a Christmas tree on a porch with a rocking chair 🤣

I think if we used the dead trees at the end of the season as wood pulp or reclaimed wood scraps then it would be a good source for something like paper or even toilet paper. With how many trees are waisted every year it would probably be a good idea.

We have a fake tree that my great grandma bought like over 20, maybe 30, years ago, and I love that tree. My mom's been talking about wanting a new one the last couple years because it's thinner and scragglier than it used to be because of the little plastic needles falling out over the years, but it always ends up looking pretty after we decorate it anyways.

We use paper towels in the bathroom, it has stopped spreading school illnesses. We have hand towels too but if anyone is sick, they dry their hands with paper towels. If any are used to dry things on, they are saved, dried and use again to clean up bearded dragon poop. I have been saving old clothes to cut up for pee rags. I need to figure out what to use as a diaper pail for soaking them.

One of the best things, i LOVE this tip and 100% recommend it! You can get a Rotisserie chicken (meat jelly and all) and put it in a pot with; onion, garlic, celery, ginger, and cinnamon; add water, salt, pepper, and chili, boil it for a few hours and it will be one of the BEST soups you could EVER make.

I decorated a plant I had for several years until going through my mom’s stuff and taking her lighted table top artificial tree. I can’t wait to use it instead of throwing a string of fairy lights I scored from my 2019 wedding on the ficus 😂

Got my fake Christmas tree in 2018, so this'll be it's 6th year in use. I do plan to buy lights if it fails but so far it's been working fine for my family. Water is scarce in my area so I can't do live trees as easily. I admire your tree knowledge, thanks.

These days my husband and I don’t have a tree at all, I just decorate with a few festive items around the place. But I have lots of fond memories of having a real Xmas tree growing up. One year we went into the woods behind our home and my sister and I convinced our dad to chop down a small pine tree and boy was that a very “Charlie brown” scraggly type of tree, but we loved it!! 🎄

I'm extremely allergic to them too and it makes me so sad because as a kid it was a ritual to go to the Christmas tree farm every year. We lived in WA state where it was normal to go to your local Xmas tree farm (similar to a pumpkin patch). My allergies to them started as an adult. I've been using a fake one for years now due to allergies.

We used to get a real tree every year from the lot when I was a kid. Then about 1970 my family decided to get a live tree which we decorated outside in our screened in patio. Then we planted it in the yard where my mom had already wanted to plant a tree. Later my mom wanted a Xmas tree inside so we helped her research what size she had space to store and got her a much smaller tree that sat on a table. I think we got it from someone in her church who didn’t want to pay for shipping when they moved out of area. She had that nice little fake tree for 30+ years. When she died we passed it on to one of the neighbor kids that was moving into their 1st apt apartment and wanted a small tree just like hers. Personally, I don’t have a tree at my house but enjoy the tree at my sister’s.

Thanks for making this video! I liked how you went into depth on each option and its impacts. Hopefully it helps people not make the same mistakes I did when buying my first tree. I got mine before starting on my sustainability journey, and it's the absolute worst tree situation you could have - cheap artificial flocked tree from Walmart. I kick myself every year when I take it out both because the waste and the fact I don't even like how it looks anymore. I'll be using it forever though, because I don't think anyone wants such a low quality sparse tree 😭 And I'd rather it get use than sit at a secondhand store for the season to then be thrown out.

If you already have a fake tree, using that is going to be your most sustainable option. Keep using it if it’s still good to use. That needs to be stated. Using what you already have is always the most sustainable option. Our family has a fake Christmas tree that we got many years ago, so we’ll be using that again.

Whoa! (๑⚆‿⚆) I didn't know some of these options existed! I likely won't be doing it, but it’s good to know some public lands allow tree cutting. And the return program to the nursery is a neat idea! I'll have to look into this where we live. My parents have been using the same faux Christmas tree for about three decades. (๑˃‿˂) It’s still going strong! And I have two friends who've created a mini “Christmas Forest” with the faux trees they’ve collected over the years. One simply kept every tree rather than throwing it away, and the other goes around to friends and family every year to see if anyone is planning to buy a new one and toss their old one. What's interesting is that since she started this about a decade ago, we noticed more and more of her family have been reusing their trees! (๑⚆‿⚆) Now, they are people with the space and storage space to do this, so it won't work for most people, including myself. But I thought the idea was cool - and the result when they decorate is beautiful! (๑•‿•๑)

OK, I’ve been washing my period underwear in the washing machine and it doesn’t get out all the blood so I finally put peroxide in it and washed it with hot water in the sink and a lot of old blood came out of it and it was really gross. I thought the washing machine was cleaning it all out, but it wasn’t And I’ve been wearing them for six months and washing them after I’m done and then finally after wearing them for so long how old they were all that old blood was just piling on top and the smell was really disgusting. I woke up one morning and it smelt like cat ammonia like that really gross smell if you don’t clean the litter box out it smelled so bad and I was like what the heck I’ve been washing my underwear after every use.
