I was just comparing genuine indigos to the indigo hues this week! I think Daniel Smith has the best match and it's lightfast with good depth.

So interesting that the Schmincke Aqua Drop Indigo is made with purple and green! I would not have guessed from looking. I guess it's so tempting to use blue and black since Indigo is a blackened blue. I got a Maimeri Blue Payne's Grey that's made with real Indigo as well, although I think it's a different type of indigo than PB66. However it's also a dye, and therefore not so lightfast. But interestingly it granulates!

That is interesting! Seems to be so many different versions of this color, it's fun to see what each brand comes up with!

I like the Shinhan Pass hybrid colours, the ultramarine is very easy on and intense as are other darks. They can also be used dilute and mix well.

I second this. :) I actually also really like Shin Han PWC/SWC Indigo. My favorite Indigo shade is a synthetic pigment that I'm not able to find anymore in the states (from Kremer Pigment) that I mulled myself. Perhaps Kremer in Germany has that pigment? I also made a version with gold mica that I love to use. ❤

Also for all you deep blue & indigo fans...if anyone is interested in seeing artwork (semi-realistic/traditional simple landscapes) that often uses beautiful ranges of deep blues and grays, with the occasional pops of other colors, you may want to check out UK artist Natasha Newton's YT channel. I haven't watched her in a while (admittedly 🙄) but the last time I tuned in I think she's was beginning to broaden her palette a bit.

I fell in love with Holbein indigo when I saw it next to a deep pink or magenta (talking watercolor here.) I wasn't even sure why it was dazzling me so much. Those two colors next two each other were gorgeous...each color seemed to make the other so beautiful! Then I checked the pigments of Holbein indigo: PBk6-Lamp Black PR122-Quinacridone Magenta PB15-Phthalo Blue Of course, that's why these colors looked so great together! The indigo had the lovely magenta pigment in it and for me, at least, makes for a fabulous indigo, especially when paired with other deep pinks and similar colors.

Lovely swatches! I personally love Winsor and Newton and Daniel Smith Indigo watercolours. They are different enough to warrant having both, and are both more lightfast than PB66. I am also searching for a good Indigo gouache. I love the WN version, but it’s not that dark. I have ordered 'Blue/Black' from Holbein, but haven't been able to try it yet, so will see how it turns out. Thanks for the video! :)

Ok, I checked my gouache collection and I have two indigo possibilities for you from the Holbein Iridori line. The autumn set has Indigo G866 made from PB15, PR83 (real alizarin, not lightfast) and PBk6. I definitely see the phthalo blue coming through on the edges of my swatch (although in theory indigo is a very specific and important color in Japan). I do notice in the middle of the swatch where I layered it more is very deep and does indeed look VERY indigo. I also noticed the Iridori winter set has Blue Black G883 made from PB29 and PBk6. This swatch has more "indigo vibes" as I think you see it. I also have Delft Blue from Schmincke Horadam which is a very nice indanthrone PB60 (they actually have a second one in the line which I'm very curious about). I agree Schmincke's indigo is a bit disappointing but I do think they craft the color assuming you'll apply it nearly full strength out of the tube, which can look very different to the way you swatched it. Perhaps you might like them better if you apply with a palette knife, or layer a couple coats.

Thanks for sharing! I definitely need to look into some options in Gouache although I have since picked up a dark gouache I'm absolutely loving- Daniel Smith Bloodstone Genuine, love it! Not even close to indigo though ;)
@jennw6809Ай бұрын
@@iritlandgraf Having a great dark is so important!!! I am loving your "indigo period." I love Perelyne Green for a dark which is very much in the same vein as Bloodstone. It's a bit unusual in gouache but W&N makes one. I do want to try out some Daniel Smith gouache soon... they have some unique colors like PR176 (Carmine, which I know we both love) and Nickel Azo Yellow (nobody else makes that in gouache!) and I hear they pan up extremely well. Hey I'm curious, since Schmincke has an indigo in 3 different gouache lines, which one was the one you got? The Horadam Indigo is actually the other PB60 in that line. The Designers is a 4 pigment mix of ultramarine, cobalt, indanthrone and black. And the Akadamie indigo gouache is PR101, PBk7, and PB15:1 (a very red shade of phthalo blue). So interesting that they choose to make it differently in each line.

I do like the Daniel Smith gouache in pans. I've had some for probably a couple of months now, even more (since August) and they mostly stayed put. It does make a difference if they are used often or left too long to dry up. I think the one I have from Schmincke is not their Horadam. I'm not even sure I've seen the Horadam gouache anywhere here in stores which is usually where I pick up Schmincke stuff. I may have to try and grab it ;)

Hullo Irit, I am wondering if you have tried any of the choices for YlnMn Blues? In watercolor or any other mediums? You live in Austria so getting Schminke brand products, right? I have purchased a set of 10 colors of Schminke Akademie gouache I the 60ml tubes. I know that they have 30 colors in the range but they simply are not sold here in the US! What do you think about the Akademie gouache? I see that you have used the horadam gouache is is just more available? I have not got the Horadam as it is tremendously expensive here! I got the 10 tubes for $50.00 and this is a great price for 60ml tubes! Thank you for sharing your favorites with us. I am looking forward to seeing more examples of your creations. See ya next video!

Hi irit, the superb resource artistpigments website you mention is your friend here. Your fav… Sch *485 indigo is lightness 22.7 hue angle 311. But only 2 from 5 stars for lightfastness. Close matches to the schmincke… although they do contain bk… Rosa b15:1 v19 bk7 (L22.63/HA331.54) leaning towards magenta. W+newton v19b15bk6 (22.16/300) leaning slightly towards blue, astm lightfastness ii is better than schmincke. Dan smith b60bk6 (23.13/340.54) more magenta… but astm lightfastness i I use the winsor and newton watercolour and daler rowney fw acrylic pigment based ink b15r122bk7 (25.39/264.83, more blue leaning). Agree with your point about going too heavy with these gives a sheen. Thanks for showing the pencils, that is very helpful. Enjoy your indigo voyage of discovery ;) looking forward to watching your chosen gouache that matches the schmincke watercolour.

ShinHan uses PB66 for their Indigos but combine this pigment with PG7 (Pthalo Green) in the PWC watercolor line (but they don't tell you.... I still like it.) May be the same with the PASS paint. Kremer Pigmente has a genuine Indigo (NB66) as watercolor pan. That is my favourite as long as lightfastness is not concerned.

My favorite watercolor indigos are Da Vinci's Indigo (PB27, PV19), and Maimeri Blu's indigo (NB1). My pencil is Dark Indigo Luminance, and I don't have a favorite in acrylic or gouache. But you might really like Maimeri Blu's indigo, although it's not lightfast (and Da Vinci's is only rated "Good" due to the PB27). Maimeri will also probably be easier to get ahold of, as it's Italian. Da Vinci is still a really USA focused brand, and I don't believe Jackson's has it. It would cost an arm and a leg to ship from California.

i started with W&N Indigo and it is still a favorite dark blue gouache (PB15.1/PBk6/PB29) and don't mind Schmincke's PB60 Dark Blue Indigo gouache. Shin Han's Indigo gouache and watercolor is pretty and inky blue but use the fugitive synthetic, PB66 pigment.(NB1 is the plant derived indigo (fugitive) and you might just want to try it in the Schmincke Natural's watercolor line but its a little light; Maimeri Blu has a better version) I have yet to try Daniel Smith Indanthrone gouache. For Indigo watercolor, I like Jackson's (PB15.1/PB60/PBk7) as well as Daniel Smith or Roman Szmal's which are both PB60/PBk6. Roman Szmal's Indigo Hue is really my favorite indigo watercolor! Also agree on Caran D'ache indigo pencils and neocolor ii as well as Faber Castell Albrecht Durer marker and Pitt marker! You might like the Navy Blue Posca marker. I just got it.

Thanks for this. Fun to watch you go through the indigos. Question about the Lukas acrylic,On Gerstaecker website, I found the Lukas CRYL STUDIO and Lukas Cryl Terzia Professional Acrylic (in spite of the term "professional", the studio one is more expensive for same quantity so I am not sure what to make of it). Which one are you showing here and do you know which is better, what is the difference between them? I have few of the Cryl Terzia and it seems more matte than normal acrylic. I have not tried the cryl studio yet.

Re the intensity of your watercolours. I was watching an interview with Hazel Soan the other day and she says that every time you wet your watercolours, you’re separating the pigments from the binder and degrading the binder, so by the time you get to the end of your pan, you’re left with hardened pigment particles with very little vehicle left. Some people pick up paint with a flick and others get in there with a big wet mop and swirl it around and create a soup in the pan. The latter makes me cringe. I see it a lot in swatching videos (not yours, to be clear). I guess, if you don’t mix your own colours, you’re less likely to use the palette to mix your paint to the required consistency and just do it in the pan?? Maybe that’s where this habit develops? Anyhoo…just my thoughts on the subject. I guess that’s the benefit of using angled wells so the wash can stay separated from your paint.

Interesting!! Thanks for sharing! Pan soup can be an issue 😅 although it can be satisfying to just dig in there at times 😉
