My problem is that I live with my elderly narcissistic mother and she expects me to provide entertainment and take her out every day. Nothing is ever enough. I give her two hours each morning and I get myself prepared mentally, but some days I’m not well, I don’t feel that I can cope with her and I become triggered. So then I’m ill and end up in a huge argument. I’m a very high functioning and very socially aware autistic and my diagnosis is used to invalidate everything I say. But for various reasons I’m trapped here, wasting my precious life being criticised constantly and being told what a terrible person I am. My self esteem is in tatters and I’ve become paranoid, thinking that everyone hates me.

There are times when no matter what you say or do, they just don't change their behaviors because they do not see any wrong in what they are saying or doing. Sometimes they know exactly what's wrong, know exactly what they are doing, and try to make it a game. I'm not going to enable it, but I am also not going to parent. I've encountered many narcissistic people in my life I know how they operate.🤷🏻‍♀️ Pick your battles or else they will happily drag you to their level.🙂‍↔️

OMG Lisa, I love you! thank you for bringing this on, obviously there's a lot of new research in this area -- I truly hope for narcissism to be healed in many cultures! And I believe that includes knowledge and (safe) empathy, I have known quite a few narcissists, or seemingly so, and they're really just hurt little kids who need love and sometimes it's possible to break through the ice and touch their hearts and change their lives with newfound trust and shifts! Looking forward to listening to the rest of these series! (am developing my podcast during the days!)

Question- when setting boundaries, suggesting therapy, a book, working through it …. And the response is “oh, you’re always the victim… “ and so the power, shaming, controlling, just Yuck gates open…. So what to do? How to prevent it getting that way… I just exit

There are very, very few marbles in the good behavior jar for DJT. And I have no clue about why any could be there... So now we know why there are so many hard-core supporters. They look at DJT and see themselves.

I have been crying over a heartbreak more than a year now like every day but these podcasts are helping me so much to heal and distract myself from crying so excessively. I have lived my life taking care of others putting myself last and being the scapegoat in narcissistic family. But i am on healing journey it just gets difficult sometimes when i hear or see harsh stuff about women it triggers me but i am trying my best to change my perspective

The content is so useful, plus Terry’s cadence and tone. Btw, if someone wanted to go through my phone and seems to want me to prove fidelity - that would be the end of it. No drama.

2:06:38 Your discussion of autism here is SOOOOO true! I have a high functioning autistic son and worry about his social interactions all the time, particularly law enforcement or others on that parallel spectrum that might see him as prey. Frustration is a huge part of his life because of that struggle to communicate and be understood. I pray for him a LOT!

Generalisations are at least unacurate...I am a woman and I am an introvert, a thinker, I put to the test the world around me...I don't trust my five senses...we, human beings, wear masks ....it's better to trust your gut.

Love every episode seriously. As long as there are strong and inspiring people I'm always intrigued somehow. Just wanted to comment on one thing though. Woman often downplay a compliment from another female to shut down any jealousy because they KNOW woman can be jealous and mean. Or in case of a "oh it was on sale" comment i noticed i say it to avoid judgements about how i spend my money and the lack thereof.

33:10 No. This might just tell you that the person is on autism spectrum. If you're changing the plans all the time, then you're the one that doesn't see others as equal.

Educated doesn't mean someone is smart, they may be, but they also may be as smart as a rock- education is repetition to instill information or routines into your brain and we do that with dogs, birds, livestock, wild animals successfully every day- even ones that are not that bright for their species. SMART is the ability to figure things out for yourself with the sum of what you have instilled in your brain to better survive your environment and prosper as much as is possible, or at least avoid most damages and threats as compared to the rest of your species/community. My mother always said this saying about people that were functioning but not bright- "If they were a bunny in the woods, they'd be unalived."

I grew up in a family full of narcissists and sociopaths, once I see a trait that is in any way recognizable of this type, I will have nothing to do with them. Thank goodness I've never personally gotten involved with these creatures, myself but I have seen the damage they do. Surround yourself with good people and you will be happy.

No I don’t agree that once someone gets into your secret life, you can never kick them out. You can kick them out. When you divorce a person, whether a friend, a family member, or a lover, sometimes in order to do this fully, they must be kicked out of your secret life. Sure they were privy to your innermost workings as an individual at some point, but not anymore.

Thankyou so much for this! What I had with my fiancé that passed on Easter was something most people don’t have, the best friendship.. unfortunately so much was missing. What I got from this is to work on myself. No one is perfect , no relationship is but “healthy” is two people wanting the same goal and willing to work towards it! ❤

Thank you for bringing this! So insightful! Especially knowing that 1 in 10 are narcissist, sociopath or pscyhopath and then asking from there, "is this person one of those 10?" I've definitely experienced this as a target, repeatedly and have seen that as an empath, we want to help them, and they also want to heal (sometimes, or it's a play), so learning how to do that from a distance is where I'm at now -- non-attachment! and hope for humanity. ((Hugs))
