Just installed 2 new style AC 70's to replace Tidal 75's. I like these new AC's alot. Quiet as heck. Easier to maintain motor impeller and easier to load the media in. Nice and square vs oblong and with a thumb. I had to block the Tidals skimmer slots,cut out the slide door in the intake area, drill holes in the basket and block the basket windows to get it to flow thru the media. That was better but too much to do to take care of them. So back to the Aqua Clear but new styles.

Why not compare this to the AC30 because it's a closer size to the Tidal 35.

There will be quite a bit of by-pass around the inlet tube, at the top of the motor housing, when the sponge chamber gets clogged. Just like the old Aquaclears, you will notice the water spilling out at the top of the well above the pump motor around the area of the u-tube.

IMO Aquaclear filters are the best.More customization if you want.Tidal cannot be run on aquaterrariums or paludariums.The pump on the tidal should have been placed lower to AVOID the Horrible grinding noise.You get more media with aquaclear.The new intake sponges improvement is a nice plus.I have used aquaclear since the 1980 s.Nevet had that NOT restart after power outage with the 70 and 110 models.For my money Aquaclear wins.

I bought the filter. How often and how do you clean the biological filter material, and when do you replace any of the media? Thank you.
@darrensaquaticsworld7 ай бұрын
Just remove the carbon/white fine filter and dispose of it when clogged. You don't need it, and they are hard to come by in the UK. Just keep the bio media and the black thick sponge. If you want some water polishing done, you can buy filter floss and put a little if that in. The more you put in the quicker it will clog and slow down, so it's more cleaning. There's no set time scale for cleaning. If it's slowed right down take the sponge out squeeze in old tank water to clean and replace. I wouldn't clean with plain tape water.

Can someone modify the "exhaust" pipe so it goes straight from the cannister into the tank instead of the 90 degree bend it has now? I am asking because I am thinking if it is possible to hang this on the side of my aquarium (because of lack of space in the back) so I can install my light's legs between the "intake" and "exhaust" pipes of the filter. I have the Dennerle 70L tank with the Chihiros AII501 light, that clips on the sides of the tank.

@darrensaquaticsworld8 ай бұрын
Hi, I may do one in the future as i need to do an update on my new tank setups. I think it's a decent filter and is quite discrete in the aquarium, with only a small outlet and inlet on show which I like. To clean it is the same as a canister filter to take apart, so a hang on the back would have easier maintenance wise. Oase also do a small external filter, which is a similar price. If you were looking for a hang on the back filter, I would go for a Seachem Tidal.

I watched alot of these videos of people who dont do water changes and I think there are 2 things that need to happen for one to not have to do water changes. The first is having a refugium to remove nitrates and phosphates. The second is dosing trace elements to reintroduce any absorbed by the corals.
@darrensaquaticsworld10 ай бұрын
I didn't have a refugium, but you are right about them. The thing is, for them to be fully functioning, they need to be about 30% of the total tank size.

Water changes are fine but they must be 5-10% max per week, I control my nutrients by controlling levels of feeding and how much I skim, all for reef is a good product but water changes just refresh things and provide things are are not in one solution suplimemts, salt has an absolute balance of everything so feeding 5-10% of fresh water in a week helps keep things in check I check levels weekly and dose nutrients if I need to, as long as your daily weekly tank care routine is the same stability will be met regardless of what that stability is

@darrensaquaticsworld2 жыл бұрын
@Jon Sleight Yeah, it has been fine for me. Not the easiest to get in the UK, and it will slowly raise your salinity over time, so you will need to keep an eye on it. I think you could use most methods and do zero water changes as long as the elements are being replaced. What I would say is zero water changes on a brand new tank could get really messy real quick, but you never know you might get lucky with it.

When I was doing constant water changes I was losing a lot of coral and fish! Once I stopped everything started to thrive and flourish … I have chaeto growing and mangrove plants in my sump, I have a lot of rock and bio balls/brick down there and I truly truly believe that because I have a lot of life down in the sump I am able to break down all ammonia/nitrates.
