Just curious... is "Lau" the correct pronunciation of the word "Laos"?
@CarterOnConflict
@CarterOnConflict 44 минут бұрын
It is. For some unknown reason the French added the "s." No one in Laos, Thailand, or Southeast Asia responds to "Laos" other than officials dealing with foreign entities. The country (PDR - Peoples Democratic Replublic of Lao), the people, the language, are all "Lau." Thanks for asking.

Extensive, balanced and interesting. Maybe the US should not have honored the Geneva accords. Troops in Laos could have shown China, Russia that America was commited in the region. Reduced exposure and dependence of the Hmongs (less casulties). The trajectory of the Vietnam War would have been very different, no Ho chi min trail-as you discuss, no Tet, no need for a Lam Son 719. Lima site 85 could still be in use🙂 but now monitoring China. Laos is today a puppet to China, this could have been avoided. One can object to many things in Thai society, the lack of real democracy, how the old guard dont accept the young generations hope for a more transparent, equal society. But the difference with Laos (and Cambodia) is huge. Western infuence has been a path to success.

Regarding "Most decorated..". Some claim Colonel David Hackworth was the "most decorated" soldier during the Vietnam war. A very interesting man. Respected by nearly all soldiers, and he made men out of boys (not loved by everybody though- apparently there was a contract to frag him?). He started Tiger Force-but took no responsibility for what later happend with the unit. He understood the soldiers need for emotional and physical recreation, and organized places for this. He called a spade a spade about how the war was handled- thats why ne never became a General. I have seen many interviews with him. An inspiring, likeable man who died of cancer, as so many did (agent orange?). Did he inspire Robert Duvals character in Apocalypse Now? Who knows🙂.

@@CarterOnConflict Channel 99 provided TACAN support over central/southern Laos replacing Muang Phalan TACAN Site ( Channel 77) in Laos which had been over run. It was in a small depression in the hills with a finished helipad. Technicians working and there and defending the site had surrounded the area with trip flares which would be set off by the rotor wash when we landed to resupply them. There was a constant threat of infiltrators/sappers crossing the river and attacking the site. @@CarterOnConflict I was there in late 1972 and there had been sappers killed at Ubon by Thai forces before that. I remember seeing photos of the dead sappers laid out with their heads/hands cut off. NKP was more defensible and was surrounded by jungle on most sides. There was also motion sensing system buried in the ground surrounding the base. The 21SOS flew two missions on most nights with security police and a starlight scope they mounted in the door of the helicopter in place of the right side mini gun. These were orbits of the base at around 300-500 ft at random times. One mission was before midnight and another after midnight. Depending on how much motion was detected the security police command center would vector us to an area of fence line to investigate. They could also request us to drop illumination flares. It also wasn’t unusual to pick up bullet holes while flying approaches in to NKP in day light. When flying near the Mekong at night we had a frequency to contact Thai forces but they were difficult to understand.

Yet another great video Dr. Carter! 👍👏 I was wondering if you've ever read the account of the FIRST TIME Americans fought the Vietnamese? It was on July 31st 1861! 😮 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardment_of_Qui_Nh%C6%A1n#:~:text=The%20bombardment%20of%20Qui%20Nh%C6%A1n,States%20forces%20under%20James%20F.

@@briancooper2112 thank you Brian. I see your post is a reply - when I first saw the word “research” I thought maybe someone was calling me out for a misspelled word (lol) research. I do have those sometimes. Thank you for watching and commenting, I always appreciate it.

DO YOU THINK WE ARE STUPID AND DONT KNOW THAT ALL OF THESE SOUTHEST ASIAN COUNTIES WERE FRENCH COLONUES PRIOR TO WWII KNOWN AS FRENCH INDO CHINA?????!!!!! AND THAT WESTERN NATIONS TRIED TO HELP FRANCE REGAIN VIETNAM BUT FAILED. THEN WE WENT UNTO VIETNAM AND ADJUSTMENT COUNTIES DURING THE 1960S. YOUR RHETERIC IS VERY MISLEADING AS YOU FOCUS ON WESTERN SUPREMACY RATHER THAN THESE NATIONS BEING FREE ON THEIR OWN.
