I got married in 1972 we will celebrating 52 years together this year! I had an empire waist dress with a long bishop sleeves and a finger tip veil. I remember it was an off the rack dress from JC Penny. It cost $42 and the veil was $17 . Why do young people think they need to take out a mortgage size loan to get married? The average bride back then usually had a modest dress , a simple church wedding and a reception at the church hall and maybe one bridal shower held by family and friends at home. Weddings have now morphed into monstrous extravaganzas with a budget larger than the national debt. Then 7 months later the couple is in divorce court.

Dresses were elegant and the brides demure. Dresses today look like hooker street walker dresses. No class or style.

I got married in 1973 and my gown had long mutton style sleeves, a high neck, it was high waisted. It looked like a Renaissance gown with an open pleat down the front with lace inset. It cost $125 and I did my own hair, nails and makeup.

Да, дамы были дамами, их добивались мужчины, на них хотели жениться. Платья были красивые, нежные, без голых ног и плечей, как сейчас"из сауны".

I bought my off the rack wedding dress in 1972 at JC Pennys it cost $40 empire waist, bishop sleeves, high neck, floor length, white. Very pretty very modest. I still have it in my closet will be married 52 years this year. Things are so different now. Brides walking into church ( if they bother even getting married in church anymore) half naked with everything hanging for everyone to see. It used be that if their was too much skin showing you’d be required to wear some type of lace coverup over the top of your wedding dress in churches. In stead of raising the bar they lowered the standard. How many royal brides have you seen walk into a cathedral in Europe with their chest hanging out ??? None that I know of. There’s no point in modesty in a bride anymore they most likely are already shacked up with the groom with a couple of kids they already had , not to mention they could have been married before and most don’t bother even getting married in a church. So the truth is they should dress like street walkers cause they’ve already been there and done that. No need for modesty because honestly there are no modest ladies left. ( Do not even get me started on putting a white gown on a bride covered in tattoos that make her look like Ray Bradbury’s Illustrated man. It make about as much sense as putting lipstick on a pig.) In a word fashion now is not liberty it is total license.

Most of these 70s wedding dresses still look very appealing (minus their fussy hats/veils). The long sleeves, long flowing/unstructured skirts, and clean lines look very flattering on all of these women, and look very easy-breezy/comfortable. Very different from the big, fussy styles that would become popular in the 80s. What didn't age as well were the bright/loud bridesmaids' dresses and men's suits.

My husband and I were married in 1970 and Mum made my dress. It had long sleeves, empire line and sleeves and bodice were trimmed with galoon lace. I loved it. I find it distasteful when I hear young women say they want to look sexy on their wedding day. I wanted to look desirable.

My aunt had the most beautiful short lace wedding dress in 1960’s she looked beautiful and looked like a star. Lots of photos of my Mum in a rainbow array of wonderful bridesmaids dresses, her own dress was made by my Dad’s aunts who were court dressmakers it cost £6.

Thank you! Married in summer of 1970; soon to be 54 years-wow. My gown was made by a seamstress, from a combination of several gowns we saw in the big bridal magazines, and the veil designed by a hat designer. Still have it! Beautiful with also seamstress -made attendant's gowns! Wonderful event. Best wishes to all. peace

I paid $55.00 for my gown plus the veil. I had to have my dress made as I weighed only 43kg.. I love the modern day dresses and I wish I could re-marry but that would be a big no, no ! Yeah, I still have my longhaired, sexy dreamboat after 53 years. Except he no longer has long hair.

Anyone else notice how young the brides and grooms are? Looks like early 20’s. We were 20 and 21 in ‘76. All our friends married at around the same age. Not like today. Average bride is 28 or so and grooms are 30-ish.

Married 1968. My mom had my gown and veil preserved and boxed. I still have it in its sealed box all these 56 years later. Bridal gowns today look like Las Vegas showgirl gowns with the deep cleavage and tight butts. Prom dresses are so short and tight absolutely nothing is left to the imagination. Goes along with our failed culture.

All so modest. My sister married in the mid 1960's and her dress was made by our mum.... (as were our bridesmaids dresses and her own very smart shift dress and jacket in velvet... Oh the rude words I learned with that velvet suit!!!!). My sister's dress would have been still in fashion in the 70's

So funny seeing these dresses! I got married in the early 70’s and yes, everyone had long sleeves, high waist, and high necklines. And of course the hats! Now everything is strapless, sweetheart neckline and lots of skin.

I had a hat with a wide pink brim, dress with high neck and long sleeves, ballooned from elbow to wrist. Bridesmaid had similar style dress, white with pink floral and white hat, posies pink and white. Laura Ashley heavy influence in early 70s, mine was 1973. My friends husband had a dark blue velvet suit with frilly shirt, long hair and beard and platform shoes, his family said he looked like Austin Powers!
