I have a question. I have a Nikon d3400 and I am taking pictures for a wedding in a couple weeks. Do you think this lens would be good for that? The problem with my original Nikon lens is that it doesn't zoom in very far and I don't want to have to stand right in the front to take photos of them.
@BrettBodkinsPhotography
@BrettBodkinsPhotography Ай бұрын
Madelyn, I would say that you are right about wanting to be able to stand back some distance and its going to present some problems.. Are you going to be the one and only photographer or more like a secondary? If you are going to be the only photographer, I believe you may want to look into renting a lens for the event. If you are secondary, you may get away with using this lens, but may need to up your ISO a bit as it's a little slow. You will absolutely get better results with this lens if you are shooting outside with more light. Most wedding photographers are going to want more than 135mm and something quite fast like f2.8 or faster. As you can see in this video, the lens is pretty good for outdoor stuff and lots of landscapes, but not ideal for the types of portraiture you typically see at weddings... If renting is not an option and you need something cheaper with a bit of a compromise, you could get an 85mm 1.8 and shoot knowing that you will end up cropping in a bit... Hope this helps!

If you want to get something better and lighter weight with a fixed 2.8 aperture, Tamron makes a 17-50mm and a 28-75mm zoom lens that are both beautiful and not that expensive, and you don't have to deal with a variable aperture.
@BrettBodkinsPhotography
@BrettBodkinsPhotography 2 ай бұрын
Lighter weight on newer plastic lenses, but not built to beat someone with and keep on shooting! I agree about variable aperture but go too new on the Tamron lenses and you lose the aperture ring, which is very important for me. I have since got rid of this lens, but kept the 70-210 and don't see myself getting rid of it. Thanks again!

I just grabbed the f/2.8-4 AF version of this lens on eBay so I can compare it to the vintage Canon EF 70-210mm AF f/3.5-4.5, which I found for less than $100 used. So far that lens is beautiful and sturdily made. The sharpness and color rendering are very nice. My only complaint is there is no barrel lock and the barrel slides out to 200mm like crazy every time you tilt your camera down. For anyone looking more for the characteristic Canon sharpness and less of a vintage look, you can get that 70-210mm lens in a similar aperture and price range without breaking your budget. ;)

The barrel on mine stays put pretty well, I think it depends on how it was used and stored over the many years since it was made. I got mine really cheap but would have to look at other options if i paid what I've been seeing online. I still like this lens especially stopped down, but need lots of light for that! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Kind of hard for me to troubleshoot this without seeing whats going on in person. Of course with a d5600 you will not have auto focus. You also don't have the ability to meter with these lenses, but with the screen, you should be able to shoot and adjust. If you remove this lens and look through the aperture blades, are they adjusting properly? What about focus?... Like I said, really hard to diag without seeing it... Let me know and hope this can help...

Regretfully, the auto focus motor in my Nikon zoom broke and I discovered that the manual focus feature of the Nikon zoom would not work when the auto focus motor was broken. This is one of the more interesting comments I've received and I've had a few. I would offer that language changes with usage and not the other way around. Just like caramel and potato, I feel like you're likely fighting a losing battle here... I've decided over the years that most regional variations of language are due to the first or second languages of people in the area... The right way to say something is different for people who come from one area versus another. Thanks for correcting my grammar, but how many people have to use a word in a certain way before it becomes the new normal in your view?

@BrettBodkinsPhotography
@BrettBodkinsPhotography Жыл бұрын
Isaiah, I am not the best person to ask on this as I have refused to get into the wedding photography thing over the years... I have however done some event work and I would say that faster lenses are critical in wedding as you must get the shots no matter what and risk being sued otherwise... I would not use the lens that this video was about... Something like a 70-200 2.8 and a fast normal lens on two separate bodies would be ideal... Later you could start playing around with some prime lenses when you really have everything down to an art... One good fast lens would be better than two mediocre lenses in this field!! Good luck and don't get scared away based on what I've said, its just not my cup of tea. Probably the best paid photography job at this time however!!!

The camera where this (or any other AI-S) lens shines best is on the Nikon FA. Nikon started upgrading to AI-S in the year or two ahead of the release of the FA so that the camera would have a full suite of lenses available at launch. Apparently the matrix metering and full PSAM modes were being developed for the FE2 but development and testing was slow, so the decision was taken to release the FE2 without the new features, and to put them into a new camera which would eventually be called the FA. The S in AI-S stands for shutter and was to ensure full compatibility with the FA shutter priority mode and matrix metering. People don't often understand that Nikon was betting big on their electronic features and saw them (correctly) as the future of photography. I love AI-S lenses on the FA. They work well together, but more importantly the lens design and coatings are optimised for film, especially black and white film, and give a magical quality that is never fully replicated on digital.

It was a decent entry level lens back in its day. Designed for 35mm film. Most modern entry level are at least designed for digital, but also most companies have scaled back what they offer on the entry level. The way i look at it, most older lenses just offer a different aesthetic than new ones do and thats something to take advantage of. This lens is pretty good quality and the macro mode is quite decent. Won't find macro modes very cheap in the modern realm.. Good luck with your journey!!

These are great lenses. I have the MK3 2.8 which was converted to Canon mount by Eddie Houston. His conversion gives you focus points and although manual you do get confirmation from the camera. The beauty of having the focus points is it allowed me to calibrate the lens as it was front focusing. Multi selector has play in it. You can feel it by putting two fingers on two opposite points of the ring shaped part of the command and alternatively pressing gently till you start feeling the resistance of the springs - this gives the camera a very cheap and flimsy aspect! Other things, the boring hourglass, the flicker detector that reacts to LED light bulbs, the AF assistant light that triggers with very good ambient indoor lightnig ( in my case an equivalent 100 watts LED bulb on ceiling and the range 60 watts equivalent in the kitchen ), white balance default setting that is not good... The only problem here is that you did not mention enough of the negative points for this model. Nikon has lost its reputation with me, I am returning this brand new unit and I'll never buy that brand again. I also have a brand Pentax K-70 that for half the price is doing WAY better. Don' buy it, stay away from it! You have been warned. 🤨 P.S. I changed my mind this morning because I had the confirmation that the play in the selector is so by design and I don't want to penalize Amazon which sold my a DSLR in perfect condition. Also because there is ways to get around the boring default settings... Well, you get the point but I still think Nikon, though this model has some advantages to be honest, could have done way better on this specific model.

The other big thing that no one talks about with Nikon DSLRs is screw drive lenses. You *can* adapt them to Z mount mirrorless cameras, but you lose autofocus! The upshot is that, since those AF/D lenses don't completely adapt to the Z5,6,7 with autofocus, their prices have fallen off a cliff. A D810 might save you $300-500 relative to a Z5 or Z6, and in addition to that you can get pretty nice older f/2.8 zooms for under $200, which is vastly cheaper than the Z mount alternative. You can pretty much build a complete D810 system for just the cost of a Z5 and a kit lens!
@BrettBodkinsPhotography
@BrettBodkinsPhotography Жыл бұрын
Sure, its much cheaper to go with a set of D lenses, or since you're losing AF anyway, you might as well go with Ai/s lenses for the extra manual focus precision. I have quite a few of these lenses left and the thought of ponying up the cash for a Z set is daunting... Got a macro, a 50 1.4, an 85 1.8, and a few others still... Would cost me a ton of cash! You can also adapt these and many other lens mounts to a mirrorless body... Really looking to getting back into Olympus OM and maybe a few others!! Thanks for a good point!

@@illegalmindset4122 Uh yeah... So that was a photo set I took for a pretty well known traveling spray paint artist named Lady Galaxy... Unfortunately don't know what happened to Jenny, but the poor tree will bear the scars for a lifetime... Got chiggers really bad that day in the swamp!!

I’ve been slowly going through my LR catalog and flagging photos to delete, and I can totally relate to the nostalgia bit. One thing I can say is that it’s been good to analyze my growth as a photographer a little, but it’s also nice to let the ones I know are crap photos go. 🤙🏼

Yes, exactly how I felt as I went through with a more mature and objective eye... I've found myself asking why I should take another shot exactly like something I've previously taken and especially if it's something I've already deleted... I wouldn't say it's paralyzed me in shooting, but I take less shots and I feel its pushed me to work harder before I press the capture button! Something I really wanted to talk about since it helped me so much!! Thanks bud!

I also suggest the Kiron 70-210mm F4 with focus-lock and zoom-lock. It has the highest MTF score in the center region.

Right on man... I'm definitely into cheap lenses that can perform like that... Sounds pretty cool!! My favorite way to use this lens is at narrow apertures and on a really sturdy tripod, but its pretty unwieldy... Have a good one man!!

Sorry I missed this comment... No this lens is not a full frame lens... You can always look for the DX designation and those are always crop sensor!!! This was a great lens on my d500!!

With the original version of this lens, Vivitar almost by itself legitimized zoom lenses and started the trend away from prime lenses with consumer users. Over the years before Vivitar bankrupted, there were at least four models of the lens from two manufacturers. (Vivitar didn't make anything. It was a design and marketing company.) Pretty sure this is the last version. In terms of performance, they are okay today, but they pre-date technological advances like ED glass and advanced lens coatings, so even a fairly cheap consumer lens from a major maker like Nikon is likely to perform noticeably better. In its day, Vivitar did create quite a number of highly advanced lenses, flash units, and other photo equipment, really cutting edge stuff for its time

It's been a while since I made this video or researched the different lenses, but as I said in the video, I think mine is the Komine version... I think that makes it second or third version, but don't quote me on that... You're right that Vivitar led the way... If someone needs a long fast lens at a cheap price, I don't think you can do much better, and the decent macro setting especially stopped down really is pretty

@@BrettBodkinsPhotography It looks like the 3rd version was by Komine and the 4th version by Cosina. Both were variable aperture, 2.8 - 4.0. If I ever knew how to sort them out, I forgot long ago. In terms of performance, I doubt it makes a bit of difference.

you can take a photo in 210mm f/2.8 ?
@BrettBodkinsPhotography

No the minimum aperture scales based on focal length on this lens.. 2.8 is only at the widest focal lengths... Its a good lens for the price, but not quite THAT good. lol... Have a good one!

I noticed you had surfing photos. I bought this lenses for surf photography but I haven’t had a chance to use it yet. In your opinion, is this good for surf photos?
@BrettBodkinsPhotography
@BrettBodkinsPhotography Жыл бұрын
Hey Krystal, for surfing you would ideally want something a little faster and possibly longer focal length, however for some situations its a pretty good lens.. One thing you can do is wade in to a certain height (within reason) and can often shave off quite a bit of your shooting distance if you are so brave... The aperture can be worked around in many cases, but this is an inexpensive lens compared to the ideal lens for this scenario... I can't really think of a better inexpensive DX lens that goes out to 300mm, plus this is pretty compact even including compared to 200mm lenses... Anything that competes against it is probably quite expensive... The best surfing photos are often done in lower light, but you may need to raise ISO... As with the rest of photography all things have their compromise!!! Good luck and keep shooting...

I owned this camera (sold it for a D750 then eventually acquired a D610).... the 810 is a specialty camera that requires really good handheld technique that might turn off first time users. For first time full frame buyers, or planning to own it as the only camera body in your bag, I would NOT recommend this camera, IMO, D600/D610 or D750 is a lot more versatile in terms of high iso noise, minimum shutterspeed requirement and manageable file size.
@BrettBodkinsPhotography
@BrettBodkinsPhotography Жыл бұрын
I don't disagree about the technique thing, but i think it could really help someone to not have that extra crutch to lean on as far as IBIS or shutter speeds you may get away with on some other cameras... I actually disagree on file size as I look back over many years of shooting and I've deleted many thousands of old images only leaving a couple thousand left in my catalog... I never catch myself thinking if only my files were smaller but I have been limited with smaller file sizes on some images in the past that I wish were bigger.. I just limit print size on those images but nevertheless... Any one with decent file management skills can keep in output of this camera in check... Especially landscape shooters like myself... All three cameras you mentioned are great though in my book!!!
