Da’Vine Joy Randolph was such a warm presence in The Holdovers. Her performance was a really pleasant surprise, it’s very authentic and she plays so well with Paul Giamatti. Not that I care about the Oscars either but if we’re talking great performances, hers was definitely one of them. Also, very happy for Christopher Nolan I think the recognition is well overdue.

At the moment I’ve only seen three of the best picture nominees: Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest, and while I loved all of them I would personally pick The Zone of Interest as my favorite. Under the Skin was very formative for me in terms of arthouse cinema and I was ecstatic to finally see his new film after having anticipated it for years. He has a very specific way of stripping away any preconceived notions of not just cinema but the world and distilling what’s left down to its bare essence. If you’ve ever heard of the DFW essay This is Water, I think Glazer like few others draws our attention to the water that surrounds us and what exactly the water is. Although to be honest if I was running the show I’d give best picture to How Do You Live?.

I love Maggie's thoughts on stuff. I really, REALLY thought that Beau is Afraid was gonna be nominated for best picture, director and actor(s) after I saw the trailer around this time last year. It looked so moving and incredible. Then, I saw the actual film and was so bummed out that it wasn't better. In the meantime, I hope my boy Cillian Murphy gets his dues! I love him to death and he was one of the first dudes I ever fell in love with in Hollywood back in 28 Days Later era! He is amazing and Oppenheimer was just super.

Beau is Afraid is my favorite film of the year and I never thought for a second that it would get any awards recognition. It’s WAY too weird for most people, but that’s why I love it so much.

I really hope Poor Things does win best adapted screenplay cos I've put a bet on it at 8/1! I loved Poor Things and I've also bet on it for Actress, Supporting Actor (terrible accent but hugely enjoyable performance for me), Best Score, Production Design and Costume Design! I've never bet on anything before but a few of my hunches have come right before so we shall see if I come out on top!

Paul Giamatti deserves it IMO... I think "The Holdovers" will be one of those rewatchable classics perhaps even a Christmas movie. Although I'd be fine with Cillian as well. Emma deserves it although I had issues with that film. Seemed a little PEDO in concept at times... OPPEN for PIC/DIRECTOR well deserved. Robert Downey Jr. should win although loved Sterling's performance.

The “pedo” parts of Poor Things were intentionally creepy, in my opinion, and it mostly worked because I interpreted that element of the film to kind of mirror how girls are often sexually exploited at a young age, especially in earlier eras of history

Yep Cillian Murphy. He was sublime, he reached a threshold that will be hard to match for years to come. I hope the best wins and the Academy gets out of this freaking narrative about age and body of work and so on. Also last year someone playing a teacher won, I mean please let’s give it a change and 14 Irish nominations last year not an award, Cillian Murphy is literally the only non American nominee and with the most complex and physical prep and best performance between the two. He should win 10000%, I am so tired of the politics of the Academy just award the craft!

Oppenheimer should win best picture, although I liked Anatomy of a Fall too. The Holdovers is one of the most obvious films I've ever seen, every beat predictable from one scene to the next. Paul Giamatta is great in it, though. American Fiction is fine, albeit a bit uneven to the point where I found it hard to reconcile the (extremely) broad satire with the family drama. Jeffrey Wright is good in it. Who doesn't like Jeffrey Wright? That voice! Those eyes! The shape of his skull!!! (See also Paul Giamatti).

Poor Things I think is a masterpiece. I am yet to watch Zone of Interest it's only just released in UK but really looking forward to it. Oppenheimer I think Cillian deserves best actor, & Oppenheimer deserves best picture, director & maybe OST (although I adore Poor Things quirky OST). But as far as I'm concerned throw everything else at Poor Things. I agree Nolan probably deserves which is unfortunate for Poor Things because it's a masterpiece. I really don't rate Killers of Flower Moon as a Scorcese great. Holdovers - great but I found it very predictable. Giamatti seems to play that same character over & over. I love him but this role doesn't stretch him. I think Cillians performance is on another level & will win. It stretches him as an actor.

Speaking of Paul Giamatti, I've never seen a role of his that I didn't like. And speaking of Mark Ruffalo "looking uncomfortable" in "Poor Things", the same was also said about Johnny Depp looking out of his element as "Louis XV" in Maïwenn's "Jeanne du Barry", his first French project after he supposedly "left Hollywood" for good.

Well technically, the difference is that fellow directors vote in the nominations for Best Director while Best Picture is whittled down then voted on by everyone in the academy. As for BD and BP sometimes going to the same film yet sometimes going to different films, I would venture to say that it's part politics but most likely almost always more due to narrow vote splitting. And BP having 10 choices while BD only having 5 just makes these things worse. Bottom line, the two would realistically go hand in hand but they aren't voted on the same way.
