Marooned is my favorite instrumental and surpassed Shine On You Crazy Diamond Part VI as the best instrumental they did and both were written by Rick Wright and David Gilmour and was originally called The Whale Piece but Rick’s piano is to die for and with David’s guitar dipping and soaring like a solitary seagull it is moving. This was the Grammies consolation prize for the band. I love Rush (my second favorite band) but Pink Floyd are my favorite band of all time because of David Gilmour and Richard Wright’s musical telepathy and their music moves me in a way some others don’t. As far as Leave That Thing Alone it was better as the introduction to The Rhythm Method (Neil’s epic drum solo) for the next eight years. As soon as it ends Neil keeps going and does his drum solos. I saw Rush for the first time in May 1994 and was at the show sick as a dog with tonsillitis and nearly damaged my tonsils and missed school under Drs orders and took penicillin to recover and recuperate and I saw Pink Floyd 19 days later on May 19 and I said “I can die now that I saw my favorite drummer Neil Peart (may he lay in peace) and my favorite guitarist David Gilmour (who is still bringing it at 78) within three weeks of each other and both took their respective bands to the promised land and Rock and Roll History and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Hope is nice and also David Gilmour’s Castellorizon from Live in Gdańsk was beautiful and with live orchestra made it amazing. Alex’s 12 string opus was robbed by the demented whack job Zappa who was insane and overrated.

Marooned by Pink Floyd was the only instrumental that Rush lost to and I wasn’t angry. The Grammies screwed Pink Floyd for The Dark Side of the Moon as Album of the Year in 1973 and Alan Parsons didn’t get an engineer Grammy. Wish You Were Here’s sleeve and the sleeve of Physical Graffiti by Zeppelin got robbed by a soft porn album cover by Ohio Players WITAF?! The Wall lost Album of the Year to Christopher Cross. Also Another Brick II and Another One Bites the Dust lost to Bob Seger’s Against the Wind which was not a rocking tune but a mid tempo ballad for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group?! The Grammies were like let’s give Pink Floyd the consolation prize for Best Rock Instrumental. I like Leave That Thing Alone but to me it’s better as the intro to Neil’s Drum Solos for the next eight years. Marooned was David Gilmour’s most evocative guitar solo and the piano of the late Rick Wright and when Nick Mason’s drums come in the song goes into orbit. The band only played it twice live and was phenomenal but not ideal as an encore before Run Like Hell of course.

Y'all just wait. Anthem is coming. Why are we not yet? Because we are perfecting it. You will be hard pressed to tell the difference. Starts with our drummer who plays Peart like a tape recorder. The bass and I are working hours a day for months to match him. Our bass player sings and does keys. I'm doing the foot pedal. The real arrangements and Tones.

I really appreciate this post because I have pretty much the exact same opinions about Alan's drumming, (he is also my second favorite drummer behind Peart.) But what I really miss is him as a high quality human. I was introduced to Alan in 2007 by my friend Roger Fisher of Heart. I had many great times with Alan, mostly at Rog's house or at different events around the Seattle area. (I live 20 minutes away from both of their homes.) When I first met him I was just trying so hard to be cool and not to act like a "fan" because he was such a hero of mine. (I play drums and thats how I met Rog.) But Alan was such a humble and giving person and he would always indulge our requests for his memories of crazy adventures with various English drummer mates and would regale us with amazing stories of nights out with various Beatles, Bonzos and Moons. (The story abouthim flying to NY to play with John Lennon and Eric Clapton in the Plastic Ono Band on less than 24 hours notice and learning the songs on the plane is a classic tale!) But he was more happy to discuss gardening with my sister. My family and I went to the 2013 Rock n Roll HOF induction to watch Roger be inducted and to see the original Heart lineup perform for the first time in 35 years. (And also to watch my favorite band, Rush, be inducted as well.) As we were in line waiting to get into the Nokia Theatre, who just happened to be in line behind us with all the other common folk? Yep. Alan. He could have used his clout to avoid the line and hung out with the rock stars. But that wasn't him. I really miss him a lot.

Bonham: Gigantic pocket. Huge drums with a huge sound. Better with one bass drum than most are with two. By far the grooviest drummer to play hard rock. Biggest set of gigantic swinging balls that ever swung under a band, while capable of astonishing sensitivity - check him out on "The Rain Song." Peart: Meticulous. Orchestrated. Plays the same drum parts the same way every time, but they're tough parts, executed flawlessly. Probably responsible for more drummers learning odd time signatures than any other. One of the pioneers of huge kits with everything but the kitchen sink on them. A one-man symphonic percussion section. The two couldn't be more different, and that doesn't make me love either any less. I don't want to hear Peart play "Communication Breakdown" any more than I want to hear Bonzo play "Tom Sawyer." It is like comparing Eddie Van Halen (John Bonham) and Yngwie Malmsteen (Neil Peart). Bonham: makes me move and groove. Peart: Reminds me of isosceles triangle's and quadratic equations. Advantage Bonham.
@AllAboutRush
@AllAboutRush Ай бұрын
Well, I like "isosceles triangle's and quadratic equations" more 😄 I will have to ask you to explain when you say that Neil "Plays the same drum parts the same way every time", because he is notorious for NOT doing that. Geddy Lee is on record stating that there were times when they begged him to just play that part the same way because it suited the song. Let's just say he need A LOT of convincing to repeat parts. Unless you're talking about something else in his playing. But hey! I respect your opinion, very well thought out. Much appreciated!

I'm pleased to see someone rank Counterparts so high, partly because this is when I first got to see them live and have a real attachment to this album. I would probably rank Test For Echo even higher, though I know I'm in the minority with that opinion. I like these various ranking videos because nobody's list is the same. "so everyone has an opinion and it very subjective" - in your own words. So, given that, how can you say at the start it's the "definitive" ? Nonsense. There is no "definitive" top 10 Rush songs, for fans especially. Every Rush fan who knows all their music will have a different view and that's WHY they are Rush fans - because every song can say something different to everyone. You're not a true Rush fan is you don't get that.

Excellent choices, and I agree The Garden is #1. If instrumentals had been part of the all-time list (rather than a list of their own), then La Villa Stangiato would be Second Place. I also agree with The Pass being in the Top 10. Favorite line is "It's not as if this barricade blocks the only road."
