Ok I’ve got a question. We bought an old house and the basement stairs are winders on the last three steps. They have about three inches of contact to the inside framing. They kind of use a 4x4 as their connection point on the inside corner it seems. We can’t extend them at all because they’re by the entrance at the top of the stairs and they go to a wall at the bottom, hence why they used winders. Also the framing above them wouldn’t allow us to extend them out past the corner because you’d hit your head coming down everytime. I need to replace the treads because they’re multiple pieces and they’ve begun to move and don’t seem safe to walk on anymore. The risers are just like 1/4 plywood or something as well. I’m going to try and recut the treads using the old ones as templates, but what can I do to reinforce them? Maybe thicker risers to tie them all together? Frame something underneath where there’s more meat to connect them all together? Thanks a lot and love the video
@PPG196719 күн бұрын
I don't know where you are located, but I would find a competent framer in your area that's familiar with winder stairs.

What probably happened in this situation was a company pulled a permit and an apprentice ran truck did the work. It’s illegal, unethical and needs to stop. A Journeyman or Master, licensed plumber needs to be in charge of every job. Period.

I'm guessing they had asked the general or the carpenters to box it in, but it didn't get done before the inspection.
@PPG1967Ай бұрын
Even if that were the case, you don't think that's a terrible place for a concealed chase??
@cornpop7805Ай бұрын
@PPG1967 It just looked like an inside corner in a garage. I don't see anything particular problematic with having a small chaseway there. I'm open to being wrong. You saw it firsthand, why would this be a poor location for a small box-out?

Not hard, you have to install a 16 gauge metal strap across the top plate. Its R602.6.1 in the international residential code.

@HvacncАй бұрын
What do you mean? Legit question btw lol
@shortsilwadyАй бұрын
@@Hvacnc like since it's a 2x4 wall you could cut or buy some 2in strips to add to the wall to bump it out and make it wider. That way when you go to notch and drill for the duct to pass through you can go through the fur strip and just a portion of the original 2x4 instead of completely cutting through the 2x4 wall

I just tore up the exterior of a 2006 build, and this stuff was already used everywhere as sheathing, and installed incorrectly. So while lumber prices did "skyrocket" a few years back, builders would love for us to believe this was the justification to go cheap. Also, have you seen those finger-jointed studs with at least 10 finger joints within a 12-feet run? Yeah, they used those crap back in the day as much as they do nowadays. I don't know about other states, but here in TX, it's about profit, not quality and ethics.
