When the father said if he didn't pay the mortgage that he would derail the wedding, he should have said,"Good!" and walk away.

You asked her to marry you after a year? OMG. What a fool! You need to go years with a women (and not pay for them) to have any chance of wedding out a gold digger. Him: "In our culture..." Me: "That's funny... in my culture it's expected that the bride's family provide a dowry for their daughter and pay the entire cost of the wedding. It's a way to transfer wealth from one generation to the next and ensure the newly weds are able to have good start and have grandchildren. Typically you give two years of your yearly income to my father a month before the wedding and they hold it while we perform background checks on your family, a purity test on her, polygraph test, etc."

When the FIL made mention about paying for their mortgage as a sign of rest, I would’ve immediately called my Pat and put him on speaker phone for my folks to hear. We would’ve had a good laugh over the phone while he was trying to pull that off!!! Lmao!!! Then I would’ve said something slick like, “fuck your family…your daughter is marrying into mine! Not the other way around!”

Most cultures even the most conservatives ones, usually have the parents buying an apartment for the newlyweds. Its usually not the son in law paying for the parent's mortgage. Sometimes dowries are part of the deal but that is usually between the parents

If it is so important, how was you girl friend able to get onto your laptop, why didn't you have an offsite (i.e. Cloud) storage, and why didn't you have file history enabled? What would have happened if you were robed or had a fire? And what court where you in where you needed a lawyer? US small claims would be up to $25k? However, as to the GF... I'd get a PDF copy of the judgement and every few years tract her down online to see who she's with or working for... and send them a copy of your judgement.

Traditionally in most cultures, it's the woman joining her husband's family, not the husband joining the wife's. The bride price was things like oxen, crops, and the such to prove he can provide for the daughter.

"Being a supportive boyfriend, I agreed to pay her share of the bills." In short, he showed her he was a doormat, and she began walking all over him. What did he think was going to happen? Men like this are the reason there are so many spoiled, selfish, irresponsible and entitled women out there who think that taking advantage of people is fair game. And it's only when it gets really bad that they finally take action.

These were borderline psychopathic people who were attempting blatant blackmail. And the main reason they did this is because they knew he was as weak as water and was far too easy to manipulate. This man let this go on for way too long, and even at the end was far too soft on them. He should have shut this down immediately and certainly taken legal action against them for defamation when they continued the lies and personal attacks. There's no way you let people like this get away with this type of behavior as you are giving them carte blanche to do the same to someone else down the line.

Would have helped to learn exactly which tradition they're referring to; where do they originate from? Never heard any such custom from south Asian or Middle Eastern cultures. Are these people Romani by any chance? That would explain a lot.

It reminds me of the one about a British guy who had a Chinese fiance, the woman and her family started demanding dowry, that the guy surrendered his entire salary and a long list of "tradition" perks for her and her family, when the guy rightfully pointed out that the fiance had been living on the west for a decade not following most chinese traditons and that he wasnt receiving any benefit of what they were demanding the woman without blinking told him that he was following the traditions she liked and ignoring whatever she dont, against such kind of mentality there is no possible compromise, just cut your loses and dump the woman and the entitled family.
