I found you via the pantry challenge. I love the layout of your pantry shelves. Mine are such that I have to squeeze between shelves and am nervous of bumping jars onto the floor. Tarts or turnovers might be a good option for your apple pie filling. Everyone always uses frozen spinach for hot spinach dip, but I bet if drained/dried, canned spinach could work as well.

How fun! I'll swing by and watch your videos. I love getting inspiration from others. The challenge can be anything you want it to be honestly. Some focus on saving money while others have a set of items they want to use up before the end of the month. Good luck as we move into the 2nd week😊

I have decided to do a small pantry challenge this year... I will use 15-20 items from my pantry a week that are near or at their best buy date. In the last week, I used 20 items that were on my list to use up:) I started a grocery weekly budget last January and it will continue thru this year too... If I work at using up more older foods, I can keep my budget lower this month. That way I can roll over to have more money to spend later in the year. That is a win win:) PS... From Louisisana- We call all soda a Coke... No matter what it is... LOL

Rotating through our supply and using older before new is a perfect focus in the pantry challenge so that's wonderful. I too am focusing on using certain items before the end of this pantry 🤞 🤭 I've heard once or twice people refer to pop as coke lol, I'd stand out as a northerner for sure 😆

I’m not participating in the challenge (I’m scared my children will revolt 😅). We are, however, beefing up the pantry with some needed items and eating through the older, less used stock.

Sharon, please skip ahead or just exit out. This isn’t a place for that kind of anxiety driven comments. She is doing a wonderful job. I have learned something from all of these type of videos that I have watched. There are different ways this challenge works for different people. They all won’t apply to all people. Great ideas are always left for the viewers to choose from.

Sharon, She is fabulous and doing a wonderful job. We enjoy her videos. Shame on you for being so rude. It's not your job to tell anyone how to conduct themselves on their OWN videos. I'm not sure what you were trying to achieve with that comment. What were your motive? She has a beautiful calming presence that continues to inform us and we find it incredibly entertaining. I wish I had more time to try all of her ideas, but I share her videos with friends.

Yes we are doing the challenge again this year. There are just three of us. Our daughter lives and helps us with our daily need when necessary? We are in our 80s. We purchase 1/2 gal of milk, one head of lettuce, one cucumber, two peppers every two weeks all of January and February. The money we save on groceries we buy the beef, chicken, pork and fish for the year. One of our friends gives us tuna and salmon he catches in Washington. Another one of our sons shares a pig with us and we make all our own Italian and breakfast sausages. We have always been avid canners and gardeners. My daughters and some of our daughter-in-laws do group canning sessions with us. Now many of our grandchildren are learning to can and garden. Love how so many of you younger people are keeping the old way alive.

New friend here. Your pantry is so nice! This is my third year of doing the challenge, but I'm now an empty nester so it's harder to get through my freezer and pantry. My 'rules' are similar to yours, and I'm determined to stay out of the stores through January. As soon as I go into one, I'll buy stuff I don't need. Like you said, if I do that, I won't be using the supplies I already have. I love olives too, so I'm with you on those! ♥🫒

All my adult life I've used January to eat down the fridge, freezer and larder. It used to be out of necessity, now it's habit. I love January to assess what worked and what didin't - this year I really didn't eat liver for some reason so I'll turn it into pate (which also freezes well) and is £50/60 left in my budget which makes me happy, Happy New Year from England, UK

not sure if it helps, but with tomato paste. When you skin your other tomatoes to can, you can dehydrate them and turn them into powders. Then just add some water with it and you have already dont and cooked tomato paste. Tastes delicious.

I've only ever tried that in small batches in the past before I had my freeze dryer, I would dehydrate the skins but wasn't a huge fan. I do think next tomato year I'll try it with the freezedryer.

My husband doesn't mind them but it's not his favorite. I found cooking it at 300 in a little water covered for 30 minutes works ok but doesn't really satisfy the way an actual ham would. So dicing it and throwing them in casseroles is about the only option I'm left with. Someone just suggested to glaze it the same way I would a normal ham and that might be a great idea too.
@samjones9465
@samjones9465 Ай бұрын
I use the ham steaks for ham and pea soup, like you I find the steaks too thin to be able to reheat successfully. Mind you I have also used them in ham & eggs - just heat them quickly on the griddle and they do well. Also good in quiche or pasta with a cheesy sauce.

I'm watching you get your pork in the freezer. I do not know if you have ever considered canning your hams? It is very nice to have those on the shelf. Soups, beans, ham salad. Also, your ham stks, you can make all different types of glaze and use with them, or use them in stir fries, such as rice. I use a mix of pork roasts/loins, i chunk them up for raw pack canning, but i roll them in my dry rub recipe first, then can them. I would suggest to coat them heavily the rub. It comes out so mild that you need to use a lot of rub. They are delicious and you can do so much with it. Sandwichs, bbq pizza, add bbq sause for sliders, and so much more. Sometimes i do make the rub sweeter and sometimes spicier, i like having both on the shelf. I also can up some chicken the same way. It is so delicious! I hope that gives you a few ideas. I enjoy your channel. Thank you, and God bless!
