Oh my goodness that looks so delicious. I would put a piece of bread with some rice and then put that over it. It's kind of like excuse my language but a s*** on a shingle but with ground beef gravy. Anyways this dish looks so good and can go with pretty much anything or by itself and also I can't wait to see more from you because oh my goodness that looks amazing.

My Mom taught me how to make that when I was in my teens and today I'm 81 and still making it in several ways. I make it the standard way like your making S.O.S. but with hamburger and not chip beef , served over toast. Then I do one where I add diced celery , onion and garlic along with rice. Sometimes I sub Noodle's for the rice. That's served in a bowel as a meal. It's really good when camping. Thinking about it , guess what's for supper tomorrow night.

Flavor tip: Don't just cook the hamburger. Brown it. Before you break it up, cook each side until you get that nice deep brown Maillard reaction going. It will leave some brown in the pan but as you break up the rest of the meat and cook your onions, the liquid will deglaze the pan and get all the brown bits back into the mix. Not only will you get a more robust meat flavor, but it will make your gravy browner instead of grey. The same thing goes for cooking the sausage when you make Biscuits and Gravy which is just the breakfast version of this same recipe. Just substitute breakfast sausage for the hamburger.

When my son got together with his first wife, she informed me she HATED gravy, I made this one night, she took a bite of my son’s over bread…she went to the kitchen, got a bowl & this was the only thing in the bowl…no potatoes, rice, bread, nothing but hamburger gravy. Her mother thought she was rude because she refused to eat gravy her mother cooked, but ate whatever gravy I made.

Now thanks to your advice I will make your basic white sauce recipe without the salt/pepper with the evaporated milk that I have to substitute for the cream.to pour over the existing clam fettuccine!
