Ooh, man. That sounds worn out. The vinyl, that is. I'm sure the turntable is doing it's best, But there's a total "flatness" to the vocals, the guitars, in fact, all of the mid range. It sounds as if all of the band has wooly socks over their mics.

odd, post is deleted 😂 but my 10k headphone system with 192kHz song sounds better then your 370k with the LP ...

I'm sure. But my live playback sounds better than your 192kHz file.

I believe BASIC MILES features the July 4, 1958 Newport version of Fran-Dance, not the studio master take of May 26. The May 26 “Love for Sale” went unreleased until the 1979 2-Lp set CIRCLE IN THE ROUND. There are two complete takes of “Fran-Dance” from May 26. All five of the May 26 tracks are on a supplemental CD to the 2009 SONY Legacy edition of KIND OF BLUE. For this new vinyl edition THE BIRTH OF THE BLUE, I can see why they left off the alternate take of “Fran-Dance” - to replicate a late 1950s “LP experience.” But assuming a CD version gets put put, you’d hope the alternate “Fran” would be included well. Still, if you have the Legacy KIND OF BLUE, you already have all five of the May 26 tracks. Finally, the original JAZZTRACK LP had soundtrack music from ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS on Side 1, with “Stella,” “Green Dolphin” and the master take of “Fran” as Side 2. JAZZTRACK was only issued in mono, but the May 26 tracks were recorded in stereo.

It does sound great!!! My only question is why it takes so long to lock onto the proper speed? I can understand that you can't lower the tonearm until you get to proper speed, but it takes seconds to lock whereas most turntables are up to speed before one complete revolution. Thank you for the video.

Supposedly, when Dynaflex was introduced, it was to be produced with better product, though thinner. Some Dynaflex pressings sound better than prior pints of the same record.

It looks to be a beautifully curated box set from Blue Note. Is it expensive, yes but it does appear to be full of fun and informative stuff. I haven't bought it as I no longer have an analog front end (I transitioned over to hi-rez/immersive to physical product) many years ago but as a lifelong music fan and audio collector/phile, I still enjoy all things analog and occasionally buy records for my best friend who inherited a mid-late 70's Thorenz. What fun has he been having discovering records from multiple decades and genres. I have followed you for decades, enjoy your work and respect your views/reviews. Cheers!

with similarly priced cartridge: Naga MP150 , Moonstone, AT 540 . would you pick the X8 or the X2. Would I benefit more from X2s tonearm (heavier and alu-carbon sandwich) design or X8-s overall better design?

The degritter mkII is just as good and half the price at 3k. I have sampled several including yours, the loricraft, humunguru, isonic & the degritter. The degritter matched the KL and was better at cleaning than all others listed.

You say that this box is not about value, it's about celebrating Blue Note or more broadly, the jazz vinyl resurgence. But those of us with limited funds care about value, out of necessity, and we have far less expensive ways of celebrating BN and the vinyl resurgence - for example, by purchasing and cherishing Tone Poets. Or by hunting for and purchasing VG+ or better vintage copies of BN records. LIke many vinyl enthusiasts, I prefer the sound of vinyl to all-digital media for most recordings. But like many of us, part of what makes vinyl a joyful experience is the packaging and the rituals of pulling a record out of the case, admiring the full-size cover art, the pictures inside if it's a gatefold, unsleeving the record, putting it on the turntable, and dropping the needle, and enjoying any included essays or photos.. It's a much more tactile and complete experience than playing a hi-res FLAC on a good network streamer. Many of us really appreciate a well-made jacket, gorgeous artwork, and a thoughtfully-made booklet with informative essays and rare photos. You get very little of this with a CD, and none of it with hi-res FLACs. But the BN Review volumes are mostly about the packaging, in the sense that the records in them, if sold as standalone records, would surely cost less than half of what the BN Review box sells for. For me, the value of the records need to be more than the value of the packaging, especially on very expensive boxes like the BN Review volumes. I purchased BN Review Volume 1 and while I did enjoy the music very much, and the photos and essays, I thought some of the pack-ins were junk and the price I paid was too high for the value I got from the set. To those who disagree, I respect your opinions and I will never say you're wrong. I just wanted to offer a different perspective. -- Oh, one last thing: for those of us who care more about the music and SQ and pressing quality of the records in expensive sets like this one, some comments on the music and sound quality would be especially valuable, compared to a pure unboxing video.
