Are there many public access points on this grand lake? I enjoy paddle boarding and canoeing on big lakes like this. I've learned in my travels many popular lakes like this offer very few places with public access to drop in a canoe or paddle board with no parking either.

Personally, and possibly with the exception of Normandy purely as war history buff, I wouldn't choose any of these places as far too well known for my liking. I'd pick somewhere up in the North in the Pas de Calais area for it's cross-channel links, proximity to Belgium and Holland, and Germany not too far off either. Paris isn't a long drive from there too.

My advice: take youf time, visit the country, travel around (not only the tourist areas), mingle with the local people, stay for a while in various places, be patient and open minded and don't rush into buying property before you know what you are doing.
