I started playing the series starting with 3, but I always had an intrest in the games. I knew nothing about Splatoon lore, other than "haha, there's ink and you can be a squid or an octopus". I have played through 1's story mode and I wanna get the Octo pass and Splatoon 2. I play as an Octoling. I knew they were new for Splatoon 3, as I had seen a video before getting the game saying so. That, honestly made me choose it. I did look at all their hair as well, and the Octolings looked more like me, or how I wish I looked. Splatoon is a game where I get to escape the physical reality of things and I can be a "Squid Kid". So being an Octoling for me was how I achieved my persona desires. Also, I've loved octpuses a LOT since being a kid, more than squids (squids are still cool though). So there's also that slight bias. Since learning the lore of Splatoon, it doesn't change my mind, rather just having a growing appreciation for both Inklings and Octolings.

When I first heard of octo expansion back in splatoon 2 all I wanted was to be one so when I beat it I was super happy and I loved the animations octolings had for victory and loss screens the lore was also a big part for me bc I love octo expansion and the whole story of it for me marina was always my favorite idol too bc of it and I always thought the octolings were cuter tbh lol I do hope they get more hair styles tho

In splatoon 4, I'm definitely making a different character, since my current one I'm making take a break due to the whole story mode situation (and burn out from repeated splat fest and grizzco things)

I've always loved playing an inkling. I've switched a couple times before, but I always go back to inkling lol I think it just suits me better.

After looking back at this video over a year later, I can say that I tend to switch between Octolings and Inklings a lot! Sometimes, it’s a ‘personal head canon’ that they know each other, but other times, it’s to represent my looks in real life! To go into detail; my hair used to be straight, and I saw myself as an Inkling more than the Octolings, especially back in 2 when the Octolings didn’t have any long hair options for the male variant. More recently, my hair has become curly due to genetics, and so I use Octolings to express my hair more, seeing as they curl a lot more, and now can be used with the Male octoling as well! And for my OCs, my Inkling is a ball of energy, usually a hot-headed mess of a guy, and I use him when using weapons like the Octoshot (his main in S1) and Enperry Dualies. My Octoling is more of a Cold, Calculated person with a violent side, and I use him to play Splatanas and Rollers (Charcoal Decavitator and Krak-On).

13:08 yes! this is very true and I am one of them the reason I do it is because I created ocs with my player character. like my octoling needs to wear specific clothes and specific weapon (althought I can switch if I want) same goes for the inkling. I did this because I wanted to get attached to my player the same way Im attached to marina or callie if that makes sense? and I used to draw splatoon when I was a kid but now that im older and my art has improved I enjoy drawing them ^^ Im still working on the ref sheets for them and I hope to one day get better at drawing splatoon characters.

Agreeing with what Toastroach commented, i love the little lore bits and have always been attracted to the details for Octolings! I remember reading somewhere that Inklings generally look more approachable in the city compared to Octolings, and this ties along with how in Sheldon’s shop Inklings look at the freshness of the gun (are social extroverts who stay up to trends,etc-), whereas Octolings test out handling and weight for actual usage (more introverted, they keep to themselves and are usually on edge and often keep up their guard, due to the whole ‘escaping the underground’ thing). i align more with the octoling personalities, i keep to myself and usually am planning something out in my head :)

I personally play as a female octoling because the female octolings have cute marks around the eyes, which is very unique, and i like it alot with Splat2 "default" male octo's hairstyle, but i sometimes switch to inkling, even if i find most of the hairstyles boring and the difference between male and female almost invisible (i get its for more diversity but thats why i play female octo, because its cuter and looks better for me)

Interesting. My guess was that Octolings would be in the minority due to having less hair style options. I'm indifferent either way but I just liked the hair options more on Inklings. As a fan of the series though, seeing the alternative behaviour in the animations of Octolings is fun to see.

Rank might actually change the ratios As seen in these comments, a lot of people play as octolings because of lore and experience from the previous games and there might be a correlation between being a long time player and having a high rank
