@AmblingTrails6 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment. When I did the filming I actually show the outside of the pack for the mat, which has printed on it the weight of 290 gms and therefore did not do a label title as I did for all other items. In retrospect, and taking your comment into account, I now think it would have been better to use both approaches for that item. A lesson learnt for me. Cheers, Nigel

This was a beautiful walk, it's good to see you on the trails again. I'm watching it in November and already feeling nostalgic for the light - but not the midges! Ireland has more mountains somehow than I imagined.
@AmblingTrails6 күн бұрын
Thanks Catherine, totally agree on the light, too many walks now are that horrible overcast grey. I think that part of Ireland, the south west near the sea seems to be quite mountainous and worth exploring further, which I’m thinking of for next year. Thanks for dropping by. Cheers, Nigel

Great video showing the route in winter. Can you tell me details of the (waterproof?) cap you wear? Thanks. Dennis
@AmblingTrails9 күн бұрын
Hi Dennis, glad you enjoyed part one of the route, hope you enjoy two as well. The cap is not actually waterproof as I tent to find waterproof caps to warm, I rely on my waterproof hood to keep me dry. In that video the cap is an Icebreaker cap. Obviously, what we take on trail in the winter is significantly different so I have done a winter rucksack contents video as well. Some good tips. I tie a long bright cord to all my tent stakes, and if its very windy I use the loop on the cord to loop around the tent cord so it has no chance of coming off. You can double up tent stakes that way too. I see your point of having the door open, but you risk putting the tent up incorrectly if you dont close it before you stake it out.

Nigel, Having only ever been in a tent for the odd family holiday when I was young, and once as a "stay at home garden camping holiday" a few years back during COVID, I would never have thought of most of these. They are great hacks that I certainly will put into practise when I begin doing some wild, and not so wild, camping in upcoming walking holidays. Also, I was not aware of the zip lubricant and cleaner product, which I will now purchase to attempt to loosen the jammed hip pocket zips of my favourite day pack (which is probably only around 5 years old). Cheers, Ryk.

Hi Sue, the waterproof jacket is inov8 and the puffy is Montane, which are both hooded so was not sure which one you meant. I have been buying from both brands interchangeably, depending what sales they have on when I'm looking for a particular item. By signing up to their newsletters you can generally get decent discounts. Hope that helps and always happy to answer further questions, cheers. Nigel

Beautiful video, as always ☺️ If I may be nosey - I noticed during the rainy section of this video that you are not wearing your Green Rab shell as you often have! What waterproof jacket have you gone with this time?
@AmblingTrails25 күн бұрын
Totally happy to answer your questions. The green shell was actual Montane Alpine Sprit Waterproof Jacket which I purchased in 2021 and has you've seen extensively used so I thought time for change. The new jacket is Inov8 Venturelite Jacket FZ, it's slightly lighter than the Montane so I might tend to wear it more as a 3 season jacket and use the Montane as a 4 season, but still discovering which is best for what/when. Glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Nigel

Enjoyed all your Kerry Way videos. I did the Beara Way in 2022 after Covid. Its worth doing just for the ride on the cable car to Dursey Island and you'll probably have the island to yourself. Bere Island is interesting too. I booked it with Hillwalk Tours and stayed in B&B.s - would love to wild camp it. I'm just starting out wild camping - looking forward to doing the Wicklow and Kerry Ways after starting with the Slieve Bloom Way. Would be interested to see what gear you used for the Kerry Way and how much it weighed. Good to see you out and about again.
@AmblingTrails26 күн бұрын
Thanks Sue, really appreciate the insight into Beara Way. Best of luck with your chosen new adventures and welcome to wild camping. The kit I carry has not really changed that much over the last couple of years, so if you go to my channel page you will find a number of kit reviews there. However, I always keep a note of my carry weight for each trail, so I do know that my gross for the KW was 11.3kgs and the net (without food, water, gas) was 7.7kgs. I think overall this could have been a bit less as I had planned for 9 days and spending a couple of days in Dublin. Thinking on, I might do an end of year review of kit generally carried. Cheers, Nigel

Nigel, I find stiles rather quaint and charming and I actually quite like them - they are almost as rare as hen's teeth here in NZ - although the ladder style of stile is probably the least old-fashioned (and my least favourite) and I imagine 200+ of them over 5.5 days could become annoying. It's been quite a few months since you did this walk and, although you've mentioned one walk that you might do in the coming months in a reply to one of my recent comments, I'm guessing you aren't yet back on the (overnight camping) trail. Although you said in the video that you enjoyed the Kerry Way very much, you did mention the tedious (road) walking a couple of times. I find the true test of a a great trail is whether or not one would consider walking it again (even if you wouldn't have the time), so therein is the question - time permitting would you do this one again? You asked about the Beara Way. Another KZbinr I follow did it a few years back. Here's the link to their video if you find it useful - kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6O2dqChfpKBf7s Anyway, as always, another great watch. Cheers, Ryk.
@AmblingTrails27 күн бұрын
Hi Ryk, you guess correct, I think a few more weeks before I can face overnight camping and obviously this time of year makes it more challenging. However, I do have a couple of ideas to keep things ticking over. Yes, if I had the time I would do the Kerry Way again. Possibly I would miss Waterville and do the alternative mountain route. But I hear the Beara Way is similar but more rugged so that might be even more to my liking. Thanks for the link. Cheers, Nigel

@@AmblingTrails I am still new at camping, been just 3 times to real camp and 2 times wild. I have Nordisk Svalbard 1 Pu back at my home country, which is great tent but was too big when packed. But I relocated to Hong Kong, and I would like to camp here on weekends as there is a lot of semi wild campsites. This tent looks like a good value for the weight ratio and it is double skin as here all places is reachable by foot. If I buy it I will also get footprint to keep away the condensation. I am always willing to help with a comment and two. DOne a video or two myself and I know how hard can it be to make YT show your channel.
@AmblingTrails29 күн бұрын
Nordisk make great tents but they all do tend to be heavy and bulky but great in hash environments, possibly overkill for HK. Hope you enjoy your new adventures in HK. Cheers

Nigel, Some lovely sections of trail. I could almost smell the air at times watching this, especially around the 7:45 to 8 minute mark. Not sure how comfortable I would have felt with a camper van pulling up right next to where I'd pitched for the night. Your comment about being low on water brought back memories of a day while on the Pennine Way when my 3L water bladder unexpectedly ran out on a sweltering day. Needless to say I became very drained of energy and had to rely on the kindness of strangers in a) being given what remained in a local woman's bottle as she was almost done a short walk, and b) later getting ice cubes from the occupants of a house while I sat in their company embarrassed as my boots stunk of cow dung. Looking forward to the final leg. Ryk.

Nigel, I needed a walking video fix today and came back to watch this one again, as you know a trail on my long list of to-do's. I noticed you've updated your post, and thumbnail picture, for this video to honour Victoria - who certainly stepped up to be more of a presence throughout (and even taking on camera operator and narrator roles) - a touching tribute. It was great that you were able to have this kind of experience and time with her. I can't imagine what you've gone, and are going, through. I'm glad she made you promise to continue walking, as you should, although I expect that walking trails will have another layer of memories, thought and experience now and, especially so, this particular trail. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the video of this walk again (especially the footage of the abbey with its ominous wind soundtrack, and I do love a good ruined castle) and, if time permits, I will add it to the next walking holiday itinerary. Thanks again for posting it. Cheers, Ryk.

Hope you don't mind me asking.
@rajmoranАй бұрын
@@AmblingTrails I’ve walked the Beara Way twice (‘22 and ‘24), and the Kerry Way in ‘23. I loved both of them but the Beara is my favorite of all of them, so far. It’s quite a bit less traveled, the peninsula itself is a bit “wilder” in terms of its geology, and, while there is a bit of road walking, many of the B&B owners will give you a lift to cut out the more onerous bits. If you’re on Facebook, I started The Beara Way group a while back. There are quite a few members who’ve done it recently and they’re all happy to answer questions. As I said, I loved both. The Kerry Way has one of my favorite walks, that bit from the Black Valley to Glencar. I hope this is useful. I’m always happy to chat about walking in Ireland (or anywhere, really). I’d love to do the Wainwright Coast-to-coast walk one day.

@6:20 The word 'Holt' on the side of the Black Dog public house suggests a railway or tram, ran through here. In parts of Lancashire a Holt is akin to a station or -crossing. Here's the intriguing part - look around - 1. The road and terrain all have quite sharp angles of incline, both up and down, in all directions - foreground / background etc. 2. Railway trains don't work in this terrain without first cutting a 'route' through. Question - So which came first? Logic says the holt (station and tracks) were functioning normally before the 'terrain' arrived out of the blue and changed everything. It's like a real life crime thriller - whodunnit? Who done eden in?
