If a person or group treats you like an it and you insist on treating them like a thou, all you're doing is harming yourself for no reason. There's no moral high ground in sacrificing yourself for someone who hates you.

You make a good point. There is a time and a place for I-it relationships and a time for I-thou relationships. It is our job to discern when each type is appropriate and makes sense given the situation. That being said, it is also possible to recognize someone’s humanity and set a strong boundary to protect yourself.

Thank you so much Dr May, this RO DBT playlist has been an absolute treasure trove for me. Through this I’ve learned so much about myself that I previously couldn’t pinpoint/articulate (ie being over controlled). I’m relieved that these skills exist to help me (and others) heal in such practical ways ! Much gratitude

I’ve come to understand I was my ex best friends FP, she eventually severed the relationship herself - not me, and I never understood what I did (it started to go wrong when I got a boyfriend) even though I still was prioritising her. I’ve never had any closure so these videos are helping me come to terms with it after several years of being baffled.

I've only learned about BPD and FP in the last few months and it's been helpful because I use social media now to have a few FPs but to bounce between them to avoid full long term obsession. However, I find that in real life I self isolate to avoid driving people off with the FP obsession or intensity of BPD & an FP. It has felt very lonely

I’m super interested in stumbling across this modality for Avoidant PD coping …I’ve been misdiagnosed as bpd as there is no research on Avpd & I’m female (& they also share a fear of abandonment , expressed differently) But isolation and the social safety is super problematic. But I also under control too. Binge eating , etc . I don’t know if that is due to ADHD and a separate problem. I’m not a high functioning perfectionist , so I don’t know if that’s even over control , but I fit the behavioural inhibition and all the childhood temperaments. I also have the wonky fearful avoidant attachment so , in the module it says the therapist approach would be suited for avoidant , but I would want therapist attachment. Interesting but puzzling for my specific situation, but maybe it’s not so black and white

Hi there, Thanks for writing! I’ve found that RO DBT-and regular DBT skills can help a lot of different people. You don’t have to fit into a neat category in order to benefit. Maybe it would help to check out some of the skills and see what makes sense for you. Like they say in AA, you could take what you need and leave the rest. Hope that helps! Dr. May

I wrote a comment on here two months ago, I have been seeing a psychologist who specialises in DBT for that period of time, we discuss the core fundamentals of the condition much like this video which assists in making sense of everything I am dealing with in my life, and then during the week I am away from her I work through the solution via journaling, meditation on inner-belief and security, and building a stronger sense of self. It's a lot to take on, sometimes you find yourself having to forgive your parents or others that hurt you, betrayed you, assaulted you, you may grieve loss, it takes time to sit in your thoughts saying "I forgive you" before the soul meets the words. Of course OCD wanted to kick in for two weeks and destroy my life but having a spiritual pillar (I gave my life to Christ - I know it's not for everyone but it really is life changing) has been a blessing in terms of obedience, looking outward, not worrying about what I think of me because I know what God thinks of me has centred the entire experience. I am becoming much more secure, when I feel rushed or someone is confronting me (i own a business) I use words of honesty strategically "let me organise my thoughts around that and I'll get back to you" or I am learning to pause before answering. I am finding a lot of power coming back to me. I still have to stop overcompensating and people pleasing as much but I am ok with not being perfect, I have more work to do, it's hard being patient. Anyways, sending you all lots of love and pray you all heal deeply.

What if something that happened in the past still manifests in the present?
@jennifermayph.d.2761
@jennifermayph.d.2761 28 күн бұрын
Thanks for your question. The idea is to mindfully observe how your current experience of that past memory/experience is manifesting in the here and now in your building blocks of experience. Then see if you can “drop the story” and focus on those present building block experiences and observe how they change and shift from moment to moment.

Hi Dr. May, I was wondering if you could do a whole comprehensive series on ERP therapy like you did sensorimotor psychotherapy? I'm in DBT for my emotion dysregulation, but it's not helping my OCD. I don't have access to ERP where I am either. Or ACT therapy because that's the other one they say is effective for OCD. That one's also hard to find information on. I've gotten some books but it's pretty confusing to me, almost too abstract... At least what I've been reading so far. Just a couple ideas for those of us with serious problems with OCD, agoraphobia, and any anxiety based disorders. No pressure. Thank you so much for everything that you do for us. 💓🙏🏻
@jennifermayph.d.2761
@jennifermayph.d.2761 28 күн бұрын
Thanks for your suggestion. It might be a little hard to do something on ERP because it's very individualized. You basically need to come up with a hierarchy of fears/anxieties from least intense to most intense. Then you work on exposing yourself to those things without avoiding or running away while trying to use calming techniques and resources that can help you return to your window of tolerance. The closest video I have on this subject now is from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy series, "26 - SP - Recalibrating Your Nervous System" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIG4qH-Ne9eMftk I'd be willing to look into making some ACT videos in the future. But meanwhile, similar things to that are DBT - Distress Tolerance - Radical Acceptance kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5CapGx4pppjjtU and Healthy vs. Unhealthy Thinking Styles - kzbin.info/www/bejne/q52mqK2Lqt2gi6s (similar to ACT's concept of Cognitive Defusion). Hope that helps a little for now! Dr. May

@@jennifermayph.d.2761 Thank you so much Dr. May. I'm glad ACT and DBT are so closely related. It should make it easier to understand. So far I find it pretty confusing, more abstract from the books I've been reading. I do think it's focus on value driven action and acceptance as the most important things is very useful. But it also seems harder than DBT because you seem to have to expose yourself to all your difficult feelings and thoughts without distress tolerance...I hope that's just my misinterpretation. I think ACT and DBT could work well together. Anyway, thank you for answering. I look forward to all of your videos. 💖💖

I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles with PNES. It can be so hard to go through life with PNES and not have enough support or answers. Even if there are no clear causes for the seizures, maybe start by keeping a journal/self-monitoring chart documenting what was going on shortly before the PNES events happened in terms of life events, emotions, body sensations, relationships, stressors, etc. even if you have not noticed anything yet. It could be that your emotions are being channeled into your seizures and are not fully in your awareness. It might begin to open up some insights and correlations that could possibly lead you to some solutions. People have also told me that sharing some of the PNES videos and/or information with friends and family has helped them to get more support and the support in itself brought some comfort and relief. So perhaps that might be something to try. And continue to practice some self-acceptance, validation, and compassion in the process, as it is difficult and you are certainly not the only one in this struggle. Online forums of PNES sufferers might also be a beneficial source of support, especially if you do not know of anyone else in real life who has them. Again, I'm so sorry to hear about your struggles and wish you help and healing. Dr. May

The prevailing thought was what happened to a child before age 5yo the child will not remember or be affected by things. I joked that my infancy taught me to just shut down, ignore future trauma events. That reaction was atypical for many with PTSD, took my until age 54 to finally receive a cPTSD dx due how innate my hiding reactions from the world while maintaining the social, happy mask.

@@jennifermayph.d.2761 Honestly your video has helped! I'm recent to the VA system, which puts the community based treatments available to shame, using the information you taught allowed me to talk with my providers who ordered an in-depth psych eval to determine best treatment options after a highly unexpected negative reaction to an in-patient treatment program.. In past I minimized the pre-verbal incidents but the innate drive for spiritual life sited made me laugh in recognition because I was always seeking deeper spiritual paths and was a postulate to become a Carmelite nun when my mental issues overwhelmed me (learned I am highly dissociative also-yikes). This made me feel less *odd* and gives me a way to understand myself, self advocate and to work with my treatment team within the VA mental health system offered within my Vet Hospital.

I had one for the first time in a little over a year today they always exacerbate my symptoms of dissociation and also recovered some repressed memories about my molestation

@@jennifermayph.d.2761 So I wanted to share a little more about it. I do a lot of this kind of work for myself for years in therapy, KZbin, whatever I can do. I always either feel like I'm either in cement or speeding around or not functioning well. It would slightly go away but would constantly show up when i tried to move ahead and I would sabotage my efforts. It got to the point that I couldn't move at all and I was in a complete financial and health ruin and couldn't move - like bad for several months and I was going to be evicted - UNTIL I saw this. I felt like I was doing it to myself but when I actually saw this video it helped me to see it as "outside" of myself and not as a character flaw which it was was the whole reason I couldn't move. I realized if it's something GOOD for me I've been conditioned to freeze and not move forward. Maybe if you did a series on how this goes with self sabotage it would resinate with others. I know I have a friend who is so clueless but calls it self sabotage and doesn't see it as what I see it now as I Do. Isn't the brain amazing! thanks again

The content was excellent but I have to be honest: I couldn't hang in there with the countless "rights and okays" which are really bad public speaking habits. It's akin to professional presenter saying "you know" a lot or being interviewed and using that phrase repeatedly. You have a lot of likes and listeners so maybe I am overly tuned into this, or they're being too nice to mention it. We can all improve our craft by listening or watching our performance on video and receiving constructive criticism. So thank you for your sharing but try to drop so many of those same phrases...

This is an insightful presentation, thank you. Sorry, English is not my native language. I am a person with BPD. I think that this FP thing originates from deep inside. It roots from an idea that a perfect person must exist. (If not, then the world is over.. no hope.) Maybe this feeling of longing for a perfect person is childish, but truly exists. Most people with no BPD simply cannot understand and get confused experiencing this idealization. That's why I have often been labeled "selfish" and without love (for my FP), which are possibly the most horrible words to hear from an FP. 😞 (BTW, I am a hetero male and my FPs have mostly been my female romantic partners.)

I don’t agree that there are “negative emotions” and “positive emotions”. Ever anger and fear have survival functions and so are positive. I think “depleting” and “rejuvenating” are better terms. A depleting emotion activates the sympathetic system and a rejuvenating emotion, such as love or gratitude, activates the parasympathetic system.

Yes, technically,the unconscious sensation/emotion comes before the conscious feeling by a few milliseconds. But people vary in terms of what building block of experience they notice/report first. And sometimes people may notice one aspect of experience and not others unless you really prompt them to remember. The main goal when you do a behavior chain is to get the general idea of a sequence of inner and outer events so that alternate skillful behaviors can be identified and the process can be useful.
