In 1955, my Dad put a 1955 Mercury Mark 20 on an Arkansas Traveler Aluminum boat. He bet my Uncle Art $5 that he could outrun Uncle Art's Johnson 35 HP Aluminum Crestliner Boat. They were to race down the Mississippi river from the sand bar to the railroad bridge and back. By the time they came back to the sand bar, my Dad was well ahead of Uncle Art. Uncle Art never paid my dad the bet and never took his boat out on the water again. Dad eventually sold his boat to a cop but Uncle Art's boat, neglected, sank at the dock. 🤠🤑
@WiltshireTutorials9 күн бұрын
Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us, James. Love hearing stories of the past! 😁 Back then, Mercury supposedly undercut their HP ratings on their engines. Meaning, if a Johnson 15HP and a 15HP Mercury went head to head, often the Mercury would come out on top because the 15HP was more like 18HP. Good marketing tactic, if you ask me! 😋 I'm guessing this is what happened with your Father and Uncle! Depending on how long the aluminum boat your Dad was using, I'd say he had a real advantage over your Uncle. I feel bad for your Uncle though... 😅

No Deadman throttle?
@WiltshireTutorialsАй бұрын
Not on this boat. I wanted to keep the look consistent. So, I used the original throttle that would've come with the Hurricane Merc 200 in 1976. Plus, this engine is not direct drive. It has a gearcase. The engine is all original and I don't want to modify to be direct drive. If you want to see a boat with a dead man's throttle, I suggest checking out my Hal Kelly Jupiter with a Mark 20H here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4K1pmCNd5torK8
@terryboehler5752Ай бұрын
Nice. I was transported back to the fifties. If there was any chop and I managed to kill the engine, mine would pivot until the transom was upwind then swamp and sink with just the bow poking out of the water. There was an inflated inner tube shoved in the nose to keep it from disappearing. When everything was working the nose would submarine through the waves. Quite an ill mannered monster for a seven year old. Mercury with spark advance lever in the front of the cowl. 7&1/2 horse ?
@WiltshireTutorialsАй бұрын
@@terryboehler5752 Sounds like it was a wild ride! I haven't had a boat dig the nose yet. Hopefully it stays that way. If the engine has a spark lever advance, it was probably an engine from the mid 50s and older

Would krylon 1303 crystal clear acrylic coating spray work as a good substitute to the acrylic conforming coating?

No. It would act as an insulator and could possibly be conductive for the sensitive components. The conformal coating is designed for use on motherboards and it's components.

One more thing, was that only one pass of the conformal coating or did you do multiple passes before the paint? I only saw one pass but wasn't sure if maybe you did more off camera
@WiltshireTutorialsАй бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, your comment got buried in my comments section. I did a few coats of conformal coating. I rotated the motherboard 90 degrees for each additional coating to make sure to get all sides of the components to protect them. When painting, be sure to stay away from metallic paints, as they contain metal flake and will be conductive. Only go for flat paints.

@@WiltshireTutorials Actually i do have a curiosity. The way i see it, the process of shunting implies soldering two resistors in parallel with the connector resistor and the pcie resistor. However, I see that you don't have stacked up resistors. I am assuming that the guys from jk removed the factory r005 resistors and installed r003? From what i saw all forums suggested soldering r008 over de r005, and from my understanding that leads to a 8*5/(8+5) ~= 3mohm. Please correct me if i am 100% wrong in what i just said. Also, please excuse me if it takes two or three readings to understand some things i said, english is obviously not my first language.
