Ajax is carrying a Hollywood replica of Mycenaean tower shield, or one well known variant of it. You're using a lot of later pottery depictions, but archaic and classical depictions of Homeric heroes have them dressed and armored in archaic and classical fashions, whereas if you look at Mycenaean pottery depicting warriors, along with other near eastern bronze age depictions of warriors, you'll see those influences all over the movie. They incorporate some later elements, or take some license when it comes to main characters, but when you look at the extras, you see the effort to be faithful. Also, there's no reason for any pankration moves or methods to be in this movie.

Helen of Troy 1956 was a much better film. It had a good story and terrific acting. This film might be titled Brad Pitt and friends.

Dude, this is genuinely good. Was just watching Troy and thought "what do the Greeks today think of this?" So thank you for the insight! As a backdrop, the Iliad was the first book I every loved (translated into Romanian, but still) so I'm super excited to hear an actual Greek give his two cents on the matter. Keep going!

Why are shields so little utilized in movies depicting medieval or ancient world combat? Either they throw them away outright, or hold the shield away from the opponent so they can swing freely with their sword. Perhaps Hollywood feels like combat using a shield is more limited and they can't show the characters doing really flashy sword swings.

Perhaps it has to do with the age old: Offense = fast, exciting - Defense = slow, boring... Which is what someone who has no knowledge of fighting would think.

YES I've always been interested in ancient Pankration and Ellenic martial arts, unfortunately, there's not much left of what they used to do in their fights, I love this channel already

The "shaky" camera movement is part of the effect to create on the audience, IT'S A FIGHT SCENE, not a symphonic orchestra playing......

I hate Hollywood's obsession with flaming arrows! It's so ridiculous.

well look into the duel of Ajax (oh god) xD Also i heard that there was a hero who jumped first on his shield, so that he wouldnt be the first one to land, and the guy who jumped next on the beach itself was killed first, as the oracle foretold.

Maybe the Ajax featured in Troy is actually the other Ajax, son of Oileus, not Ajax son of Telamon?

If this was supposed to be Ajax the lesser it would be considerably worse.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Helen of Troy made-for-TV movie that came out around the same time as this one (mostly because I want someone to tear into Achilles' awful costume design).

The Myrmidons would have used neither a lambda nor a mu, as they would have been using Linear B letters if they were capable of writing at all.
@AMOPankration3 жыл бұрын
The movie used a Lambda (ancient/Homeric Greek), and since the Iliad is written in Homeric Greek, a Mu would have been the more appropriate choice given the route taken. The movie's language is in English of course, so again the "M" would have still made sense. If going Linear B -- as you rightfully propose, and which would have been ideal -- an "ant" ideogram would have been used rather than an acronym; but the movie is way beyond that level of historical accuracy. Individual illiteracy is irrelevant when it comes to making a set of sails.

I have a question for you, do you know who the historical Mycenaeans were based on? They were called the Danaans. They’re historically the tribe of Dan, a Hebrew tribe. Samson was their greatest and most famous member

"I do like the design of Menelaus' shield..." Menelaus: Yeets the shield away "Ummm... never mind, I hate this duel" What is it with them tossing their shields away, they should've consulted someone who knows the lore, history, for crying out loud.
