Hey everyone. This video was insanely difficult to plan, fact check, and edit, so if you like it, please show the channel some love. Do you think I should also do the sequel: 300: Rise of an Empire?

Much appreciated. I just hate indiscriminate advertisements, especially when the videos I'm making are showcasing cultural heritage. It's a costly hatred, I'll give you that, but I've made it this far without compromising, might as well keep going. Edit: Welp, I spoke too soon. It appears as though I don't have a choice on the matter.

Many theorize that the movie we see is not what actually happened but what the other Spartans are envisioning through their imagination from Dilios telling the story before the next battle. That's why you hear his voice in the beginning and throughout the movie.

I think this is my new favorite video of yours. I was particularly interested by the whole political part. Fascism is bad for a lot of reasons, but a Greek person's frustration over certain groups appropriating and misrepresenting Spartan culture is an angle I'd never heard before. Hope all goes well with your short film!

Great video. I always find it funny when movies add detail for drama, when the reality is just as good if not better. But i still enjoyed the movie. Need to add more later... forget it I will just donate on patreon.

I've enjoyed your channel quite a bit, especially your analysis on these films which use our culture as inspiration. I think you should cover the spike show deadliest warrior. The series puts two warriors from different cultures against eachother., they feature 2 episodes with the Spartans, as well as one with alexander the great.

Got any source on the traverse crest being a royalty symbol? Been discussing along the international hoplite reenacting groups for some time now and even professionals don't seem to ever have concrete evidence about any kind of specific symbolism .Am asking cause I research for my own backlog of videos about the whole aspect of the Hoplite too so if you got something on this it would be of great help. fun fact: there's literally TWO stunt-men in this entire film that wear armor, in the Immortal fight, once the Arkadians arrive you can see one Arkadian dying who wears somekind of armor and there's a random Arkadian dude with muscle armor just...kicking ass actually(you can see them when Dilios describes the way they fight. Literally two guys in this entire force remembered to bring (or bothered to buy) something for armor and one of them just dies on the spot XD

Have you ever seen The 300 Spartans film from 1962? I did enjoy this movie but looking at the historical and realistic then no. But I've always wanted to know what the battle actually would of looked like and how it was fought etc.

This movie is the greatest example of "us vs them" thinking. A heroic western civilization vs endless eastern hordes is a common trope. Meanwhile historically both had their flaws and of course the persians weren't weird monsters. Also why won't they make a movie about a good persian king like Cyrus the great, who was known for his heroism and just rule.

I would say that 300 is like a coin. Heads, the entertainment keeps those people with a short attention span interested. Tails the tactics and semi accurate historical information. Obviously the narrator has a bias, it clear propaganda. He is clearly speaking to Spartans about to battle. He was hyping them up. One of the things taught in training is how to overcome killing someone. You have to make the enemy seem inhumane. It helps soldiers to cope with that internal conflict. A more exaggerated example of propaganda is starship troopers. If both propagandas are similar, then it makes you wonder if the troopers are fighting bugs or viewing the enemies like you would as bugs.

@AMOPankration

Glad you found it interesting. I avoid placing myself into any political categorization because the terms of the spectrum differ depending on country, and I don't need the extra luggage that comes with associating with an ideology. That doesn't mean I take the middle road; just that I formulate an opinion on a subject irrespective of what the left, right, or center have chosen to adopt.

Ill say that you cant avoid political contentions no matter what when history is talked about. Not that you need to take a side or anything, but its still unavoidaable. Now spartans seemed to be very harsh, and i will come to terms with my own misinterpretation of spartan society as fascist, thats my bad. But ill be happy to agree fascists arent good or even known for upholding democracy in any way lol

The spartans were fascist in the metapolitical sense, which is the way most people use it today. I think the spartans were more right wing in many ways than anything than has existed in the west for literal centuries. They would definetly be considered "hateful" by contemporary western culture by both the right and the left

I seriously doubt that, if Spartans existed today, they would object to the use of firearms. Either that, or they can embrace defeat. Also, while you make a good case for not equating them to the "alt right", I find it impossible to believe they would consider themselves leftists.
