DS Pallas models had a height-adjustable driver's seat, the exact same mechanism. Then you could have had the greater comfort, the right height for you and it would match your other seat. The SM seat really does look out of place.
@Porsche9elfer
@Porsche9elfer Күн бұрын
I just found that out recently, but thank you for the observation. I think I still would opt for the SM seats because the DS seats have a sort of reverse curve to the upright that my back does not like. Also the DS seats are much softer and the early cars have a very soft suspension, the combinations almost makes one car sick . I do plan to install the second SM seat. In any case, after driving the car for a few weeks now I really like the SM seat.

It serves as a heat shield from the headers underneath, also if there is a fuel leak it keeps the fuel from leaking directly onto the headers. Mostly it is a heat shield. I don't think they have a youtube channel

However I am planning to resurrect my street GT6+ with a performance engine, just not to this extreme. I learned a lot building this car and I will apply it to that project. Thanks for watching.

It is from a VW Sirocco. See the part 1 video from 15 years ago for more details. We have never had overheating even racing at 95F like in this video weekend. Also there is an oil cooler. Sometimes just having a new or completely cleaned out GT6 radiator will solve overheating. My street GT6 used to always overheat until I had a new core put in the original radiator. Your performance cam will not add much to overheating unless you are pushing the car hard.

Great stuff. I’ve often been wondering how difficult it would be to put a series 2 CX interior in my XM. I think it’s the peak of Citroen interiors, especially in the special chevron / fish grate of the Turbo version. In comparison the XM interior is rather conservative. I once saw such a set of CX seats on a Citroen fair for a very fair price and was very tempted. The pinnacle would be to also add the CX2 dashboard but that would very probably be asking for a lot of trouble. 😁
@Porsche9elfer
@Porsche9elfer 12 күн бұрын
You are defiantly asking for trouble, but sometimes it is worth it. The important thing to consider is the thickness of the base of the new seat and the overall width. If the new base is too thick you end up looking through the top of the windscreen where the optics can make you dizzy. There is usually some fabrication of brackets and welding involved too. Personally I would only make the change if you are extremely uncomfortable driving your XM and you know for sure that you like the CX seats. I tried three different styles of DS seats before this SM seat. The SM seat is perfect whereas none of the DS seats suited me at all.

@@Porsche9elfer Thanks for taking me seriously but I was kind of daydreaming there. Fabricating parts wouldn’t be a problem but sooner the question how far one should go. In reality I contained myself to mixing up things a tiny bit. My 1996 series 2 XM has a series 1 nose and single spoke steering wheel and the flat streamlined hubcaps of the Evasion version, which make it look extra futuristic in my eyes. As far as the rest goes I have been able to contain myself. Thanks for the nice insights into your adventures.

great car and video. Thanks for posting. I own this cars smaller brother, a race prepped vintage 1971 Spitfire Mark IV as well as a Cobra. Great cars and lots of fun on track. Very interested in a video on that oiling system. May be just the device to save the crankshafts in the cars. I have a strange piece of kit from when the Spit was first built as a race car back in 1971, I believe it may have to do with some external oiling system for the crank. Cheers from Texas
@Porsche9elfer
@Porsche9elfer 15 күн бұрын
Greeting Texas! I've seen some very fast Spitfires in my time, on some tracks quicker than much more powerful cars. The oiling system is very simple: it taps pressure directly after the oil pump and feeds it into the main oil gallery right beside each of the main bearings farther away. The main oil gallery is left intact as well. People say this prevents pressure drop in the bearings far away from the oil pump, essentially equalizing pressure in the main oil gallery. If the oil gallery were large enough in diameter it would not be necessary, nor desirable, to have all these extra lines.

I owned a GT6 back in the 1980s. Power to weight was OK for the time. The most important modifications to make are to the rear suspension. When you broke loose the back end the rear wheels tucked in and you were off for a spin difficult to recover. It died one cold icy night with a triple pirouette. It hit curbs, fences, everything. Every panel in the car was smashed, unrepairable BUT I walked away unhurt, however my pride has never recovered from driving like a Dork. If I had that GT6 in my garage now I might have as much fun on a Sunday morning as I do with my Mercedes SL.

Yes, the swing axle GT6s can be handful. Triumph fixed that with the MK2 rotoflex suspension, but then for some strange reason ($) reverted to swing axle with the late MK3. This race car has two U-joints and a slider in the half shafts to replace the rotoflex.

A five speed box conversion is a smart idea. If you want the ultimate in modernisation try contacting Emerald in the UK and talk with Dave Walker as they do a full FI and ecy kit for the XK engines. The XK engine is the best part of this car actually and runs beautifully with the SU carbs. My desire was to keep the car as original as possible and I was not even fond of performing these modifications and if not for my bad back I would not have. Thank you for the suggestion though, FI certainly is technically superior, but I do like the the nostalgia of carbs! That said, the car is unbelievably better to drive now with the 5 speed, the electric assist steering and the boosted hydraulic clutch (videos coming soon :)

You’re right about the rubber “rag joint” connecting the steering shaft to the steering box. I remember that rag joint could easily heat up and tear out upon hard cornering, leaving you in a very dangerous position going very fast with suddenly no steering. Very important modification going to a U-Joint setup on the steering shaft. You don’t necessarily know that unless you’ve been in a pretty bad spot due to part failure!

What do you think about powder coating the manifold matt black, and do you think it would hold up?
@Porsche9elfer
@Porsche9elfer 5 ай бұрын
It would work, but you may want to mask off the mating surfaces. I would also keep the powder coat fairly thin. It is possible to put a lot of powder coat dust on and make a thick coating, but this tends to flake off over time especially on smooth surfaces. I sprayed my entire carbs with T9 Boeshield which is a clear rust preventative coating that works really well. I spray it on almost everything mechanical nowadays and it keep creeping corrosion at bay on all the fasteners and aluminum parts. I drive my cars in the rain and occasional salt.

Didn't know which route to follow the new (spain) Webers (40) or now the PMO's..was pleased the 'reissuing of the webers' but these PMOs seems like a good, improved/progressed engineering... Thank you for the comment. I only changed to green fluid because all the hydraulics needed to be rebuilt anyway. So, yes it is a major undertaking as every hydraulic seal needs to be changed! I've been told that the green fluid is better as it is noncorrosive and provides better lubricating qualities, other than that I do not think there is a substantial advantage. I wish you the best with your project, it is quite an adventure. The only thing I do not like about my 64 DS is the steering. Question: Wouldn't an MSD do the same thing as twin-plugging? I'm planning a build and was wondering how great is the difference?
@Porsche9elfer
@Porsche9elfer 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. Twin plugs are used because the 911 has a high dome piston and when running higher compression and a healthy amount of ignition advance it is necessary to spark both sides of the dome to optimize flame front propagation and avoid pinging. Of course one could just back off on the advance but with a loss of power. Also twin plugging allows you to spend gobs of useless cash and makes your engine look really cool ;)
