It should be emphasized that the multi-save file static reset method is the only thing really thwarted by the broken RNG. If you’re doing random wild encounters, its very very unlikely that you’ll hit the same frames as long as your sessions last about an hour or longer. And if you really want to guarantee fresh frames on the same save files, start your games a little over 1 min apart. You’ll have advanced so many frames in between starts, it’s basically like hunting with working RNG.

Oo! I have an explanation for why the RNG is broken, but it's more of a hunch from coding experience. Emerald was the last GBA pokemon game released, and FR/LG use a completely different engine from Ruby/Sapphire. What probably happened is they wanted to use the updated FR/LG engine, but didn't want to remake Hoenn, so they copied the code from RS into the FRLG engine, but since FRLG don't use a battery for RNG, and they wanted to use a battery for Emerald, they deleted the RNG code from FRLG and added the RS RNG generator, but forgot to link it to the battery/clock since the engine wasn't made to have one. This would explain why the RNG generator always acts like it has a dead battery, since it's not connected to it code-wise, it can't use it to randomize the seed on-boot. Until we have the source code for all 3 games, I can't confirm this; but from coding experience and wanting to save time (remember, it was only 1 year between FRLG and Emerald), it makes the most sense.

Since gen 5, eggs from Volbeat or Illumise have a 50/50 chance of hatching into either one, and since Volbeat is 100% male and Illumise is 100% female this implies they are the same species by the same logic used to combine the Nidoran into a single entry

The battery is soldered into the board with connection tabs. You need a soldering iron to remove it and solder in a new one, or to heat up the solder enough to remove the battery from the tabs and insert a replacement battery cell with new solder or electrical tape.

@CannedWolfMeat I apologize. I had looked it up and saw a tutorial which didn't mention solder, but after looking at it again, I realize that they mistakingly thought the solder was "adhesive" and advised people just pry the contact off, which I agree isn't the best way to go about it (although it apparently does work).

I hunted on sapphire through my gba operator. I had nine instances of sapphire running simultaneously and got a shiny mudkip on I think three or four of the instances. I’m assuming because of the internal battery, the seeds were all wonky, and some of them were the same when I was resetting.
@CannedWolfMeat
@CannedWolfMeat 5 күн бұрын
That was definitely the case, although not exactly - The Epilogue Operator isn't actually using the cartridge battery since it's effectively emulating from a ROM that it generates using the cartridge + save file. When I tried to record the dry internal battery warning via my own Operator, it didn't show up, since it uses your computer's clock for time progression (and then also for RNG purposes in Ruby/Sapphire). So since all of your games were pulling their Seed information from the same source, that would have resulted in identical RNG, minus any slight desync or lag from running that many at once.

I'm pretty sure I've hit the same "Shiny frame" in my Emerald 3 times. 2 times on route 101 and 1 time on route 103. The 101 shinies are both Poochyenas which are completely identical down to their hidden values, the only difference being the ball I used. The 103 shiny was a Lotad. I believe all 3 of these are the same frame, because they all appeared when I did the Pomeg glitch and sent out the Question mark guy. That was very scary the first time XD.

Even if yourre batteries are working, your Ruby and sapphire file won't be truly random. That's pretty much impossible for video games.
@charnalk5572
@charnalk5572 5 күн бұрын
not the point tho, it's unpredictable enough to seem random to the player. It also doesn't repeat the exact same states like a fixed RNG does (unlike a dry battery or Emerald), or at least, it's very unlikely for it to repeat in your lifetime given the odds without manipulations.
@TheMAZZTer
@TheMAZZTer 4 күн бұрын
If you're only generating "random" numbers internally without pulling data from an external source, it's not possible to get true randomness. Using things like player input timings and the current date/time helps since no player is going to have precise enough control to manipulate these. And most of the time players won't be trying to manipulate them at all. So using these to help influence the RNG makes the randomness "good enough". But as this video states using the same inputs on the same frames can still have the same results despite the attempt at RNG. "True" randomness is generally accomplished by pulling in external data like a precise temperature or wind speed measurement, precise pixel colors from a webcam, etc. Discarding the most significant digits of such values gives you a seemingly random least significant digits which you can then scramble up to make it look even more random, and it definitely won't be predictable. Of course your GBA isn't going to be pulling that sort of data from anywhere.

4:49 Emerald with a working battery Sucessfully randomizes the seed on starting a new game. As long as the battery works getting the same pool of trainer IDs shouldn't be a problem.
@CannedWolfMeat
@CannedWolfMeat 6 күн бұрын
No, Emerald specifically DOESN'T randomise its seed when starting up, even with a working battery. That's literally the entire problem. If it did, you wouldn't have to go through the whole process of changing your trainer ID to keep re-randomising your shiny chance with the starters.
@Sparlock42
@Sparlock42 6 күн бұрын
No it doesn't. In Emerald, the initial seed is always set to 0 regardless of the set time or battery status due to a bug. It's extremely well-documented; I was not able to find a single source that agrees with you, and the RNG reporter is built on that assumption. EDIT: NVM. I misread the "starting a new game" bit. Carry on. lol
@CannedWolfMeat
@CannedWolfMeat 6 күн бұрын
@@Sparlock42 I guess I could have been a bit clearer in the main vid on this (and admittedly there's a few things I wasn't aware of that I had to double check just now to confirm), but even with the seed being changed upon recieving your trainer ID, your trainer ID is still being generated based on that initial faulty RNG seed of 0 (and thus will generate the same values predictably), and the secret id is also likely going to fall within a limited range since it's derived from the seed created by the trainer ID, and you have no way of knowing if it's a repeat of one you had before without save editing, so i'd say it's still worth double checking your TID.

Regarding Aelfgar - The idea for this video has been floating around in my head for about a month, following discussions with fellow creators about the Shiny Treecko clip. They suggested someone should make a video on this topic, as evidently there are many shiny hunters going into older-generation games without knowing this information. I began writing the script ~10 days ago and finished editing it today on the 21st. About an hour after I finished rendering and uploading, I was made aware that Aelfgar, the streamer shown in the video, had been removed from the upcoming PM7 shiny event following allegations of mistreatment and inappropriate behaviour by former moderators of his livestream. While writing this video, I didn't want to put too much focus on him as an individual because, at the time, I was operating under the impression that he was simply a streamer who was misinformed at best (or disingenous at worst) with regards to how he was presenting the odds of the double Treecko encounter. I knew nothing about him outside of this Treecko clip, and the last thing I wanted was for this video to feel like some kind of hit piece against another creator. His presence is as little more than a staging device for the premise of the video, and as a cautionary example showing that this information is not as well-known as it should be within the shiny hunting community. With that in mind, I've decided to go ahead and post this video as it is, with the addition of this comment as a disclaimer. This video is not about him, and is certainly not an endorsement of his alleged behaviour.
