I can't believe this video gave me the answer to one of the things that I never truly understood all these years as I watched anime. I hope Cure Dolly knows how much of a legend she is.

I think the が particle is easy to understand to spanish people because the sentence: I like creeps, we say like japanese people: Los creeps me gustan. Creeps are subject in sentence and for us the sentence not sound unnatural. Thank you very much for the video.

I think that my teacher and textbooks learn masu/desu form at the beginning is because you don't have any problem to speak everyone.

I am not gonna lie, I got completely mindfucked by ~takotoni . Its something I did not understand at all before this video but thinking of it in multiple steps helped. こと "noun-ifies" the verb, and に "adverb-ifies" a noun. It really does mean Japanese just fits together like Lego. Its made me think, if I dont understand a sentence in Japanese, I just need to try breaking it down to its absolute most simple parts and piece it together.

Omg... like, 6 years later i`ll try to follow sensei`s invite to type down some phrases in order to practice the lesson. I hope i get it right. 1) ろっくをすきです 2) 日本語をべんきょおおするすきです Can somebody tell me if I got this right? As i'm writing it down, and nobody can 'see' the context, should I mandatorily use 'watashi ga'?

I just watched the first three videos, where the ga, wa, wo, ni particles are explained. What is the best order to do this course? There are other playlists, one for vocabulary, one for conjugation, etc. Plus there is the Alice book for kanji, plus the Unlocking Japanese book. Should I keep watching all these grammar videos, until the last one? Or rather start learning some other part of the language such as the vocabulary, kanji (Alice in Kanji land), etc.? Any recommendation from anybody who has learned Japanese following this course? Or from anyone else.

How can I tell which nouns I can use as a "na adjective" and which nouns I need to use "no" for?

Tiredness settled like a purple haze over the known universe.

One thing that has helped me very much is to stop learning vocab primarily by memorizing the English translation. Now I learn kanji and vocab and sentences primarily by imagining the concept non-verbally. Images, sounds situations etc. When a sentence, word, kanji etc turn up in anki, I try to just imagine it. Then I look at the answer and if the English in the answer feels like the thing I imagined I pass the card. This is helping me greatly, because even in my studying I'm not translating into English, I'm imagining the meaning of the sentence, word or kanji instead. Once I stumbled on this way of doing things it felt incredibly right and my learning is really speeding up. It's a mystery to me why this is not a well known standard practice. Well, not exactly a mystery, most language learning materials are geared towards passing exams after all, rather than really learning the language. Just as Dolly Sensei keeps reminding us.

For me, a vital insight was that I should not learn Japanese words by memorizing English translations. Instead I started imagining the meanings of the words, situations describing them. Translating on the fly in my head was preventing me from making progress. Translating is a far far more difficult skill to do at speed than understanding. Switching away from that and towards imagining the things the words refer to has been a game changer and I'm now making far faster progress. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

So all this explanation is simply a very long way to say that in Japanese the subject of a sentence is often ommited. Right?

The invisible “ga” reminds me of Spanish and how the pronoun can be dropped with verbs, like “tu eres” just becomes “eres”

dolly was definitely the best teacher for english speakers learning japanese. she's able to logically explain the nuances of japanese in a way that native speakers cant because to them, the rules dont need to be explained. her editing style is antiquated and a little unsettling but the knowledge here is invaluable. rest in peace sensei!

Why is "ni" used instead of "kara" with the get verb? Surely that fits the role better as a way to show what you're receiving from .

Enable. It struck me while watching that the video seems to pretty much boil down to られる simply meaning enable. I'm not sure whether thinking of it that way will work in all circumstances, but so far it feels very right to me. I sincerely wish you were still around Sensei, so that you could receive my deeply felt thanks for saving me from the torture that is the standard way that Japanese is taught. To whoever is controlling this channel now: Thank you so much for keeping the channel up, it is absolutely invaluable.

Brilliant lesson as always! One addition. The English word "drape" comes very close to the literal meaning of these words. I never realize that though until Dolly Sensei told me what these words really mean!

As usual a brilliant lesson. One note that may be helpful to some is this: I usually change the translation of んです into "is the thing" as in "Mother is coming, is the thing.". This let's the literal English translation keep the main predicate at the end, just like the Japanese. It is also natural sounding English and it makes translating on the fly in my head much easier. So far I have not run into sentences where it messes up the logic.

Imagine what Cure Dolly would have to say about ChatGPT and LLMs nowadays... So sad, would've loved to hear her thoughts 😢

I know Cure Dolly claimed to be an AI Entity, but just how did she have such an intimate and correct knowledge of Japanese grammar? I've never seen things explained the way she did anywhere else.

oh shit i don't understand how WATASHI-WA UNAGI DA is wrong. because it means WATASHI-WA ZERO-GA UNAGI DA. and as per the lesson IT MEANS: " AS FOR ME , IT IS EEL" since zero-ga means "I" or "it" or anything related to context. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CLEAR IT ? PLEASE?

Dolly sensei was really cooking when she said i-adjectives have the だ function built in. To have this resource for free is a game changer. RIP Dolly Sensei 🙏❤ (For those who can’t get past the uncanny V-tuber model, i stick a folded up piece of paper over that side of the video with some washi tape. Works brilliantly! The model freaked me out so bad the first time I saw this channel, I actually had trouble going to sleep lol. You may wonder why she chose to be a v-tuber when surely showing her own face would have been wayyyy better. Aside from seeming to be a generally private person, she also had to keep this channel separate from her personal life. She had quite an “interesting” life/backstory being involved in a very controversial group, and was very close friends with another “very interesting/controversial” woman. I won’t say more than that to respect the fact that she kept these things separate. I just figured it might help some people understand if they knew that she significant reasons to choose this option.)

This was a god-send! I've been doing my Anki cards and keep getting confused by the self-move and other-move version of the verbs.
