It's sickening to see how a once pristine residential community has denigrated into a most distasteful and eyesore part of the 'city'. Why did it have to be this way? I have always taken a firm stance that ever since Guyana's independence, G/T has decayed in every aspect of the word. Why did the MCC allowed this to happen? Does government have a part to play? Yes I feel they should have not brought in government agencies into the area as do that wretched Rusal sucker. For me the former glory of Georgetown has been disappearing as the years pass. It's an epic tragedy for the once garden city of the British Caribbean. Shame on those who helped engineered its demise!

*Tribute to Father Bernard Darke, former Math Teacher/photographer/Scout Master at St. Stanislaus College* July 14, 2024 marked the 45th anniversary of the politically motivated murder of Father Bernard Darke (Darko) on Brickdam in Georgetown. He was murdered in broad daylight in front of St. Stanislaus College as he was taking photos of a demonstration. This deadly act has remained unpunished. Fr. Darke taught Mathematics to First Form students at St. Stanislaus College and was the school photographer and scout master. He was also a photographer for the Catholic Standard. He came to Guyana in 1960. He was a no-nonsense teacher as I found out when another student and I forgot to do our mathematics homework. Suffice to say, we were introduced to corporal punishment to improve our memory. Thankfully, it worked. Darko, if you are reading this from a place on high, we are thankful for the good foundation in mathematics you provided. The other student and I went on to successful careers requiring an advanced knowledge of mathematics and we have you to thank for keeping us on the right path. In a time when few people had cameras, thanks to you, I have photos of myself acting in a school play, participating in school sports, and with fellow students, welcoming a visiting dignitary inside the chemistry lab. These memories are priceless. The roadside monument in front of St. Stanislaus College doesn't do justice to the contribution you made to the welfare of those fortunate to have experienced your tutelage. Darko, you are gone but not forgotten.

The area occupied by the two storey wing, the auditorium and the basketball courts was previously all grass. It was used as a playfield. The first and second form students played their cricket matches there. Often times, a small crowd would gather on Brickdam to watch them play. Upper year students played their games at the Seawall ground. Every year the school had a raffle to help raise funds for the construction of the two storey wing and the auditorium. Each student would proudly go out and sell as many tickets as possible and this helped accelerate the construction of those facilities.

Sir, Having oil money can only transcend to the mega infrastructure projects, building new hospitals, houses, and improving all services in the country by strategic planning, and being smart. If we were to spend it on demerara riverside condominiums, and reclaiming the Atlantic seashore land to build hotels ,giving the population money in their pockets as some are proposing, then that would not be logical thinking. To build a country you have to improve the living standards of the populace- infrastructure, housing, utilities, medical care schooling etc. In this way you create more jobs, and therefore wealth of the people ( not handing out money).You have to earn it.

If Guyana received 4 billion US dollars why is there a shortage of US currency in Guyana, I think i know the answer but want to hear your take on the reasons for shortages in the news?
@RaphaelNation
@RaphaelNation 15 күн бұрын
The simple answer is because the Government has done nothing to defend the Guyana dollar and protect our foreign currency reserves. Essentially Trinidad companies have been permitted to move to Guyana and to exchange their TT dollars directly for USD. They also transfer those USD back to TT and in exchange for purchase for their entire operations in Trinidad and Guyana. The result is a net outflow of USD from Guyana and a significant boost in the Trinidad economy. Trinidad GDP went from 20 billion dollars to 30 billion dollars since 2020 when Guyana started oil production. So Trinidad economy has grown by 33% instead of the -2% per annum that they experienced before 2020. To defend the GYD the government of Guyana needs to enforce protection for our USD reserves by making Trinidad companies convert their TTD to GYD before exchanging GYD for USD at banks in Guyana.

Maybe we would've been better off not gaining independence because its almost 60 years and nothing to show. All i want is for Guyana to develop into a 1st world country and I dont care who gets us there. The current administration should get another 5 years because they've planted seeds that germinated but need time to grow into trees before they can bare fruit. The other party if in power will cut it all down to plant their own and we the citizens will be the only losers. So far Im not convinced Guyana will become anything close to Dubai, Singapore or Norway. I give it by 2030 then we'll have a clear understanding of where the country stands.

Dutch Disease refers to an economic phenomenon where a surge in a specific sector, often natural resources, strengthens the currency. This can be beneficial initially, but ultimately hurts exports from other sectors like agriculture and manufacturing due to higher prices. Resource curse, however, focuses on the broader challenges of relying heavily on natural resources, such as corruption and overdependence. I think you first need to work on terminologies.
@RaphaelNation
@RaphaelNation 16 күн бұрын
The point is that these terms suggest that the economic failure is mysterious. The fact is that the failure is due to corruption from within and outside foreign corruption like smuggling and bad faith contracts by multinational corporations that target the weak judiciary and corrupt leaders. 5:20 Our enclosed carport did not originally come with a garage door. It was open like this one. It now does because of crime. We don't have the automatic ones - because that wasn't really an option at the time. Instead, we had a wrought-iron gate installed as most of our neighbors now do. Our front gate has also been upgraded from the regular ones that you open by hand, to an automatic sliding one that you use a remote. Primarily because it is handy to be able to open the gate when it is raining and secondly - again crime. People have been robbed when coming out of the car to open the gate. Now automatic gates aren't 100% foolproof but it shortens the time that you are vulnerable. When the day comes that we decide to change out the garage gate, we might think about installing the automatic doors there too.
