The Kingambit line I feel are missing here. It’s essentially a predatory, militaristic, metal samurai. Your odds of survival are low.

It's not a programming error, it was intentional. In the first generations Pokedex book published only in japan it's mentioned that nidorina and nidoqueen can't reproduce, and that was before eggs so it was intentional

The fact that the game is coded so that nidokings can only breed with nidoran female is a covert signal to others within the Illuminati p*defile network that operates globally. Perhaps putting it in a Pokémon game mechanic is a way to introduce and normalize pd*filja to children .

That's a great question! I would normally think that it would continue to show its age. However, some animals, like the "immortal jellyfish" are able to change their life stage which basically resets their age. So I think you could argue either one

I think it makes sense to view Pokémon evolution in general (with some possible exceptions) as being an example of social dominance leading to physiological change. Pokémon evolve by winning battles; in the wild this would likely mean that they fight with conspecifics and only the strongest ones would gain power to protect the group. There are some real animals that do this, like cichlid fish and baboons, where physical changes are triggered by dominance-associated hormones. For Pokémon that evolve through stones (like the Nidoran line) it could be similar in principle but the stones are hoarded and protected by the dominant members instead.

I agree. A major factor is most evolutions make a pokemon need more space and food. So it makes sense that a only the strongest or a few of the strongest should evolve.

Learning about the Grandmother Hypothesis, I think I realized something! Other people have mentioned the old gen 1 Pokédex book in the comments, so I won’t go into detail, but if Nidorina/Nidoqueen do indeed go through menopause, then that puts their Dex entries about protecting their young in a new light. Rather than being a contradiction like many claim, it instead implies that female Nidoran quickly evolve after breeding so that they’ll have the necessary strength to protect the next generation, becoming infertile as a trade off. To back this up, one of Niordino’s Dex entries talks about how it actively seeks out Moon Stones, so this could possibly hold true for Nidorina too.

This adds one extra layer with the implication that nidoqueens only ever have one litter in their lives. I like it, although in games we can see that’s not the case.

Nidorino and Nidoking must be very gentle lovers by nature, despite their fierce appearances. Because if they hurt their Nidoran mate, and she wasn't able to reproduce because of that injury, they would never pass on their genes. I think that's cute.

It’s one way to prove a speciation differential between the Nido lines since they count as separate dex entries. Other Pokémon species with physical gender trait differences will still share the same dex entry because they are able to mate.

I think folks need to also keep in mind that Gen 1 lore was different than the lore we have now- specifically, its possible that the original intention of the Jigglypuff and Gengar/ Nidorino and Gengar fight are supposed to be fights between Progessor Oak and Agatha, and that the former mons are unevolved because the methods of evolution were either unknown, or moonstone meteors hadn't fallen until more recently. (The Pewter City gym displays a meteor from Mt. Moon, leaving things up to interpretation) There's a companion Pokedex book released in Japan around the initial release of Red and Green that paints evolution as a very indeterminate and seemingly uncommon phenomenon, as though it is actually quite common for many pokemon to go most or all of their lives unevolved. (I know the video does acknowledge a few aged NFE mons, but this is an exception, rather than the apparent norm) With this framework in mind, it would seem more like that a typical Nidoran F would spend much of its life just acting like a standard lagomorphic/rodentlike critter, pair up at some point to exchange gametes, lay its clutch, then finally evolve when the time was right, IF things were suitable. (I also hold very strongly to the idea that wild reproduction with pokemon is different than owned pokemon by necessity- the PC storage system probably does some kind of quasi-spay/neuter when the Pokemon get digitized. Likely for the same reason as we do so IRL, but also because Pokemon like Nidoran literally couldn't survive if they only breed in their base stage, but raise young in their evolved forms. Also, we see mons in media with larger clutches all the time in extended media) This does mean that Nidoking/Queen are basically new phenomena that only occur under astoundingly rare phenomena until recently. But just think of if Pokemon hadn't blown up like it had- Nidoking and Queen would be this surprise, secret superform you may have not noticed until you saw a powerful, later trainer using, and decided to start getting creative with the evolution methods you were aware of in-game. We all got spoiled, really. ...But the above is all basically moot, because this all basically got friggin retconned. The Pokemon world is no longer just "Earth, but with mythical creatures and better science," its a totally different planet, and there's glaring lore gaps because of this change that they really need to get around to addressing. We 100% know Nidoran's breeding situation was entirely intentional, and it was a weird choice that kiiiiinda? worked when things were a bit grittier, a bit lower-fantasy, a bit less Noblebright, and these were just dumb animals, (Except... the ones that GLARINGLY weren't...) and interpol was trying to come in and make the gangsters stop killing all the cubone. But this flimsy logic is entirely irrelevant now, when all pokemon seem to have the intelligence of at least a six-year-old, and very few pokemon with three stages go entirely unevolved for most of their life in lore, especially when the evolution requirement is just a very low levelup. Its weird to focus on this kinda thing, EVERYONE feels like its wrong to the point it feels like its a bug, and they should just change it silently, like they have with a ton of other things, both lorewise and mechanically. Just do it, Gamefreak. It would be regarded as a Fix, to unFix the Nidos.

We know they can breed fine in the wild in both in-game and anime lore, so the can't breed in captivity explanation is the most likely lore reason. It may have started with a programming error but the fact that they didn't fix this in later gens like so many errors suggests it is canon.
