As a doll collector the whole “DONT COLLECT FIGURES FROM ANIMES YOU DONT KNOW” people make me feel unwelcome. I collect figures from sculptors and artists i like, just how I collect dolls from sculptors and artists i like. I guess I’ll just stick to collecting figures from artists who create their own characters so I don’t have to watch the whole anime. There are anime characters I love who just don’t have the best figures, or their great figures are at unaffordable prices. I see it as art collecting and I love the pieces I’ve acquired and have no regrets.

lol, i buy figures i have no idea where they are from, precisely because they are pretty. if the figure makes me happy, it's money well invested. Also buying stuff for cool art is sometyhing i do, you might not understand it because for that you need to understand art appreciation. at the end of the day collecting has a lot to do with art appreciation. just look at comics, when they hired real artist they sold better, now that they have neglected that the sales have dropped. look at retro games, why are they still around if there are highly sophisticated optios? well because there is an appreciation of that art form.

I find myself wondering when it comes to the very very big collectors......how???? Is it maxxing out credit cards? Because many are students still.....I was dirt poor as a student....heck, I still am!!!!! I look at their collections and get jealous.....but then I have to sit back and go, ok, behave, you have a lovely collection, my collection, that I worked so hard for in my job. I am 39 and have been seriously anime figure collecting for about.....5 years now. It is so easy to throw all the money down the drain right away when you start collecting but, that is the worst things to do. To be fair, I have a couple of JJK figures (before even watching it, I got a Megumi noodle stopper as I thought he looked cool), I then went on to start to watch the series and I love it so much! I have.....lots of One Piece figures now....but my friend advised me to wait and watch the anime before I start....I started, I loved, have not stopped watching and my only pre-order for this year was my only expensive OP figure (Zoro). I get all my OP figures generally from ebay, Vinted and a few other sites for cheap! I adore collecting but, have quickly learned to budget properly and take time shopping around if there is one of my boys that I really wanna buy....especially Sanji and Zoro. It is hard for me being patient as I do have mental health issues and I also have an addictive personality so I really have to school myself! Even at this age! We are working class and....I don't drink, smoke, get my nails and hair etc done....collecting, drawing and gaming are my only hobbies

Wow this blew up bigger than I thought it would, but I love that we're all discussing this whether you agree with me or not. I think a little bit of disagreement is healthy for any community and I'm glad everyone is sharing their points of view. I plan to respond to you all, but it's going to take a bit so please bear with me. Also, I will need to make a follow-up regarding my last point. As expected, it's garnered A LOT of disagreement and I've noticed a major flaw in the way I presented my point. I 100% forgot about/wasn't referencing OC's and did not make that clear, but rather than explaining here since it's a rather long explanation and I'm sure already sounds pretty confusing, I'll make another video explaining my thoughts (I'm much better at speaking than typing anyways). Welcome all who just discovered me and please let me know if any of you have other topics about this community you would like my two cents about. Thanks and have a great day <3

I do get your point, but imagine being refused entry to an art museum because you didn't know of an artist, or refused a print at the gift shop after enjoying their work without knowing the title or history of that work you were captivated by. I'm new to figure collecting, but roughly 75% of the reviews I've seen actuallly spurred the desire of that collector to go read the comic or watch the show unknown because the charater or learned lore was so compelling. TMNT Mirage and Archie line are in my mind writing this for me personally. I'll buy something for box art alone, because I value graphic design as well as the nostalgia. If it generates that spark of interest and appreciation or curiosity, and is available- why not bring those feeling home?

You make very good points and I can see your reasoning, I believe the video is trying to make people aware of the product or character before they make a purchase and have a harsh realization later down the line. To elaborate, what if you purchased a beautiful painting only to find out later on that it represented something terrible? You may not want to buy it or, hell, you may be more enthused to buy it because it appeals to a darker nature. As long as one is educated (I'm not being condescending I swear this word has been used to death) on the product or character that they are spending their money on them I think it's fine to go ahead and either make or not make the purchase. I think she's trying to prevent people from having remorse down the line when they buy a character who looks really cool but they then find out said character has terrible qualities to them (i.e. Griffith from Berserk, guy looks cool but hoooooly hell he's awful). I don't believe anyone should be barred from purchasing art or statues if they don't know about said series, but they should look into it a little more or risk regretting their purchase down the line is all.

Collections are personal someone isn't gonna see an extravagant collector and suddenly decide they are gonna go all in with their collection just cuz a KZbinr they watch did, most people are a bit smarter than that. Whole video just reeks of I'm better for having a small collection...but also jealous I'm not getting the same views as the bigger collectors on KZbin. Did we watch the same video lmao? Video was to illustrate that you should look into a product youre buying before you regret it down the line for what it represents. What if you brought something that objectively looked nice but the character in question had horrible qualities you didn't know about? Should you buy a Griffith statue because he 'looks nice' even though the guy r@ped a woman and killed God knows how many people to get what he wanted? Your comment reeks of ignorant consumerism and bitterly wasted finances, sorry if she hit a nerve by bringing the subject to attention. It's also hilariously ironic that you call it sad when you're defending owning a wall of shiny plastic that has no intrinsic value to you besides looking pretty. You've done an excellent job outing yourself at being unbelievably shallow, so if that's what you were going for then congrats. Also if these bigger collectors were so well versed and experienced in their hobby for years then aren't they doing said hobby a disservice by buying products just because of their financial magnitude as opposed to what they represent to that collector as an individual? Did you even think before you you typed this out because it just comes across as an emotional knee jerk from someone who follows people who literally consume plastic for the sake of it.

I think people might have a hard time differentiating between the "I can buy whatever I like" vs "buying just to buy". I think your point is that yes while people can and should be allowed to buy what they like, the fact is that they consume media and advertisement that is highly suggestive that they "need" to buy this thing. And media literacy is sharply on the decline for the younger generation coming into these types of hobbies which will often lead to them excessively spending. Like many others I do enjoy watching massive collection videos, but I think there's a difference to what I take away from that vs what a lot of newcomers to the hobby take away from it. For me I enjoy vicariously living through their massive collection so that I don't have to spend that money 😂 but for newcomers I often feel like that sets the precedence that they need to amass a large collection and quickly for the clout. For me collecting is not just about owning a thing, there's a story/journey to how I go about acquiring the thing that makes collecting what it is for me and I think this type of aspect to it is often never talked about in the collecting scene.

I agree with this video except* for the point made against OCs, because I think that the opposite is true, that is dumb to collect figures just because you like the media they're based on. I've seen so many folks buying Goku over and over again just based off the premise that they like Dragon Ball, you see their lineup, and it ends up looking so homogenized and boring because they limited themselves to such an extent. Look, if I liked a movie or a series, then that's the end of it, I don't need to buy its merch because it doesn't add anything to the original piece of media. Media and Figures are two completely different things, and earlier in this very video, you yourself said that a figure's only purpose is to look pretty, which is actually not true, because some figures, mainly action figures, actually feature unique gimmicks, engineering or even just themes that are worth engaging with, even if you don't know the character. OCs also tend to add a lot of visual variety to a collection, at one point, I really wanted an action figure that had Wine-Red as its primary color, but characters with that color scheme are very rare, let alone popular ones! But then Houshou's Figma showed up, and not only was she sporting that color, but the Pirate Theme also stood out really well from the array of figures I already had, so it ended up being one of my favorite figures, even though I have no intention of ever watching Hololive.

I started collecting action figures after finding a great way to display my original Star Wars figures I’ve had since for 70’s and 80’s. Once I did that I started to look into what people were collecting in 2023. I discovered Marvel Legends and the Wwe wrestling figures. Both I now collect. I collect MCU Characters. I try to find them on discount, but I got the core group and a great amount of villains . I also collect WWE figures. I’ve gotten a lot of figures that spoke to me from my younger days. Meaning characters when I first started watching. That morphed into collecting some of the newer characters. I now have over 100 characters since I started officially collecting in April of 2024. I do not get figures from franchises that I know nothing about, but I do have to calm down with things I love, but just can’t collect everything. So it’s mostly MCU marvel legends and Wwe for me.

I started out with Hatsune Miku but I found some other ones that looked interesting to me, and I don't always know the character they represent, but I try to find out enough to have an idea about them, and I buy them if they look nice, including some OC characters. I also bought too many I found good deals on, but I see now good deals aren't too uncommon.

You know what? NEVER STOP BEING CHEAP. No matter how much you make in the future, always be frugal. You'll be better off than most other people. I grew up that way and carried that into my adult life. I collect different types of figures and it's my only real splurge in life as well. I don't feel like I need much more. And, I only spend a small amount of my income on it after I've taken care of the important stuff. And unboxing/haul videos don't interest me either. KZbin as a whole is more clickbaity than ever, and I definitely see more video thumbnails these days that showcase how much somebody spent on something just to get people to click on it. "LOOK AT THIS $5,000 RC TRUCK!". "MASSIVE SDCC TOY HAUL!". "MOST EXPENSIVE VINTAGE TOY EVER FOUND". I just tune it out. I'm looking for interesting content with useful information and ideas...not some consumer cult way of buying even more crap I don't need. Keep your head on straight and just be happy being you and doing things your own way. No matter your situation, you can always find happiness. Edit: After watching the last few minutes of your video, I felt compelled to add that I've gotten a number of figures from franchises I have no familiarity with. I agree that people do tend to impulsively jump on too many unfamiliar pretty things, but, there are some things out there that are attractive or interesting enough on their own merits to justify a purchase without prior knowledge of their origins. I would say that at least 90% of the stuff I have is from a show/movie/etc. that I really enjoy. But, the other 10% is just stuff I found cool and decided to buy after putting some thought into it. All that said, if avoiding such impulses is another tool you can use to keep your spending and collection under control, then by all means keep it up!

It's because the product in question should have some sort of meaning or be understood before one just purchases it. If you want to buy a character because they're 'nice looking' then that's fine, but what if said character possessed horrible qualities and you were ignorant to that and went on to buy them. Griffith from Berserk is nice looking, but he's a genocidal r*pist. Misato from Evangelion is 'nice looking' but she's a p*dophile. The point of her video illustrates that one should look into the media they're purchasing or risk finding out some unfavorable qualities about the character or series later and regretting their purchase.

KZbin is the worst, because it fuses two very addictive traits: collecting crap and getting famous. Like, wow, I can get the dopamine hit from just buying random sh*t I don't need or even really want, followed by the dopamine hit of getting clicks and views for it?! It takes a strong constitution to resist that lure. So much of it is trying to keep up with cool people you watch who buy everything and go to every convention, wanting to have that lifestyle too, even though it might only even be nominally sustainable for them because they actually get ad revenue and patreons and things that the rest of us don't have.

I have been talked to about my spending and the space I consume. But it doesn't stick, and I keep purchasing. I need to downsize. Even if it's at a loss, I need to make space and recoup money. As much as I enjoy watching fellow collectors unbox their latest haul, I often wonder how they can sustain that momentum over an extended period of time, not only financially but other considerations such as managing limited physical spaces. I have a series of rules for myself to keep my collection focused and prevent it from growing too quickly. I also recognize that at some point I may have to give up a portion of my current collection to make room for new ones, assuming I continue to be invested in this hobby in the future. I can only imagine what emotional toll those who grow their collection too quickly only to have to let go a significant portion must feel.

10:02 I will say that I don’t have many figures that I don’t know the character or what they’re from, but sometimes I’ll see a figure & absolutely love it, and just need to have it. Sometimes it’ll lead me to the source material like when I seen Nemesis from Union Creative, I absolutely loved the pose on that figure, on her knees but leaning back, and all her black/red hair spread out behind her, wearing that incredible Darkness outfit. I then bought all the volumes of the manga and bought the entire Union Creative Darkness line of figures. Really looking forward to the next one in the line, Run, she’s releasing this month, then Risa next month. Or that Sword Snuggling Lo figure from Kotobukiya, instantly ordered that without knowing her, and because she’s from a game I still don’t know anything about her, same with the Blue Archive figures, I have 3 or 4 of those ordered and don’t know them, if the anime is ever released here in Europe I’ll get it. But if they’re from a game & don’t have an anime I’ll never know about them. As all my free time is spent reading manga, I don’t play games anymore. Or the Bombergirl Aqua by Amakuni, I never ordered a figure so quick as her, and she’s amazing, I then bought the Bellydancer Grim Aloe to go with her, don’t know either character but now I want the other Wing figures of them, and the Amakuni Aloe. Haha But I have just bought my first OC figure, it’s a figure just based on an artists illustration, again I buy some figures because they’re cute, and I like the look of them, while I mostly buy figures because I love the character, there are figures that I just instantly love the very second I see them, and need to have it.

I am 40 years old now, and i am 20 years deep into collecting already, been through my ups and downs, and i should be older than most of you fine young ones here and let me say this, any videos you see is ALREADY curated to show you the best side of the toy/figurine collecting/ collection and if you think otherwise, listen to @konsumingplastik she said it best at 07:20, and think about it. and these youtubers are already monetized, so please be mindful of that. Do not wish to rant any further, but let me pen this final thought: Anime will keep churning more and more figures, More anime= more figures. And for you to try to keep up collecting ALL the figures, you are down a rabbit hole that you will not feel happy about. be happy collecting everyone, and if you cannot do so, at LEAST youtube will have people who collect them for you to look at. its something like watching people play games while you don't. nothing wrong with that.

I’m one of these collectors you’re complaining about haha, I was an American comic book reader for 20 years, but a few years ago a lot of the good writers left and they brought in bad ones, so I switched to reading manga. And it was so different, there’s no cute characters in comics, you’d never find any figure of comic book characters like you do with manga/anime. So when I started reading the manga and seen all the cute figures of the characters I was reading I started to buy a few, and then a while later every month my preorders from AmiAmi was over ¥100k.

great stuff, here! When it comes to collecting. Progress is a slow process. est.'99 here and time will test how much you really love/invested into this. For some it's a hobby and for others it is a life style❤

I agree that this hobby is tied to spending a lot of money and there are waaaayyy to many videos/ reels/ reddit posts which are just hauls instead of just talking about figures without owning the figures in particular! And sometimes I wonder how these people have the money and space to buy all of this. Your take about collecting figures of characters you don't know is valid, everyone collects for their own reasons. My reason is that I would prefer an OC figure or a figure of a character I don't know anytime if they look good! They just need to fit to my aesthetic and my other figures :) For me figures are art, and I like to collect the ones which I enjoy looking at the most :)

Hey, that's really an honest video. you're very genuine. I wonder if you think a business model of making custom merch for anime fandoms / anime fan clubs would work? It'd be great to get insights from a pro like you, thanks in advance.
