No, I think ultimately getting a chemistry degree is more useful. But it's also helpful to take some biology & biochemistry courses.

Taking a course on marketing would be helpful. The cosmetic industry makes a lot of decisions based on what is best for the business and consumer. They don't teach you that in your science courses.

The cost formula is wrong in the right most column. The grams column needs to be converted to LBs before the cost /LB formula will work!!!
@PerryRomanowski
@PerryRomanowski 2 жыл бұрын
No, the grams does not come into play for the cost calculation. Only the % in the formula matters. When you multiply % by cost per pound you get cost.

Perrysir, I want to make 100% natural cosmetics, can you help me with formulations?
@PerryRomanowski
@PerryRomanowski 2 жыл бұрын
Well, there is no such thing as 100% natural cosmetics. Cosmetics aren't natural. There is no shampoo tree or lipstick bush so every cosmetic is processed by people in some way to create the product. So, you have to better define what you mean by natural. Is corn natural? Is grinding corn up to a paste natural? Is grinding it to a paste then reacting it with ethylene oxide natural?

Hello, I have a bachelor in Health Science and a Masters in Science in Medicine to be a physician assistant. I would love to enter this field, but I just spent 6 years in school and would hate to go back. To fully immerse myself in the cosmetic chemist field, do you feel like it is necessary for me to go back and get another masters in chemistry? Or can I just use your courses on your website?
@thejoggler
@thejoggler 2 жыл бұрын
You don't really need more formal schooling to become a cosmetic chemist. It would help to have a chemistry degree but you may still qualify to become a cosmetic chemist. Taking a course like ours will give you the most useful background knowledge to apply for and do well in job interviews. That is the route I would suggest.

I remeber the first time I scaled up my batches from about 20 at a time to about 100. (I know it’s small to lots of you). Needless to say, I had to trash the whole entire batch. My fridge couldn’t cool them all fast enough and the texture of everything was ruined. Wasted containers, and raw materials. Ended up having to overnight containers for $$$$$. What a nightmare I would never forget. It changed how I did many things going forward. We only remeber the hard lessons. Lol

I'd suggest you post your question in our forum chemistscorner.com/forum But those ingredients are emulsifiers. Normally you heat up water and put the ingredients in, leave it heating with stirring until the emulsion is formed. However, this all depends on what else is in the formula.

I will opt for Option B. Positive marketing works, but is just takes time and hard work. Negative marketing is not sustainable. Definitely can see sales coming in, but eventually you will not have repeat customer. All natural cosmetics ingredients do not deliver result as fast as synthetic. Paula choice is a great example of selling cosmetics product by educating the consumer to have healthy relationships with the cosmetics ingredients. I'm a formulator and a brand owner.

also if we follow your idea of ''cruelty'' every person in the world would be cruel and no person in the world would be vegan because there is ALWAYS some animal or insect being killed by us just by doing our normal, regular every day activities, like cleaning or even eating. This would mean we can't eat flour because there are animals being killed in the process. It's great you pointed out the problem but I think you brought it a little bit too far. Cruelty free is cruelty free it means no one had to torture an animal for months just so you can safely use the cream.
@CosmeticChemist
@CosmeticChemist 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think we disagree. Although, I would say that "vegan" doesn't mean cruelty free. It just means you don't eat or use animals for food or other products. A vegan could still be an awful, cruel person. The point is that when brands say they are "cruelty free" they are lying to you because as you rightfully point out, just being a person living your life results in some cruelty. What I object to is a brand pretending that they are somehow morally superior to other brands by calling themselves "cruelty free" when they aren't free from cruelty. They should stick to the more justifiable claim of "not tested on animals" or "no animal testing." Calling themselves cruelty free is just dishonest. If they use plant based ingredients, animals were killed to obtain those ingredients. It is not a cruelty free process. They shouldn't claim that it is.
@sylwiabutkiewicz
@sylwiabutkiewicz 3 жыл бұрын
@@CosmeticChemist Thank you for explaining more but I still believe there is a difference in cruelty free and accidental killing during the manufacture process. Even in our law you go to jail for more time if you torture a person for months and then kill and if you accidentally hit someone with your car because they suddenly jump in front of it. Therefore in my eyes companies rightfully claim they are cruelty free as they don't add to purposeful torture, suffering and killing of an animal. Also, ''Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude-as far as is possible and practicable-all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals." therefore no person in the world would be vegan if we follow your idea of any type of death = cruelty.
@sylwiabutkiewicz
@sylwiabutkiewicz 3 жыл бұрын
and of course companies that claim cruelty free are better than those who make their product in China where animal testing is obligatory but production is cheaper. Again, thank you for pointing out the problem but I still believe cruelty free is better than non cruelty free and they have the right to claim so.

@@sylwiabutkiewicz Thank you for your comments. I have the disadvantage? (or advantage) of having worked in the cosmetic industry, specifically in the R&D area. It has made me cynical about beauty brands and the evidence they use to back up such claims. Beauty product marketers start with a claim they think is popular with consumers. Whether they believe in "cruelty free" or "vegan" or any other claim does not matter. What matters is the story they can tell to convince consumer to buy their products. Maybe a brand is started by someone with good intentions. But as they become more successful they have compromise their integrity and vision due to economic realities. Companies do what they can to hide any distasteful actions they take. They don't test or check up on all their suppliers but rely on those suppliers to be honest with them. They often aren't. Here's a scenario that definitely (although not always) happens. A beauty brand says they want to be cruelty free. They tell their raw material supplier that they can't test on animals. The supplier signs a paper that says they don't test on animals for that brand. But they test on animals for another brand they might supply to. So, animal testing is still happening. But the brand can claim they are cruelty free and as long as they don't ask any questions of their suppliers, everyone is happy. Looking at it from inside the industry, I see "cruelty free" as a cruel trick that brands play on consumers. You could get ingredients from agriculture without harming mice and rabbits by specifically blocking off your fields to these creatures. Then slowly harvesting by hand. It is possible to do cruelty free agriculture. But it is expensive and impractical for any beauty brand who wants to sell a lot of product. And this is why I say cruelty free is not free from cruelty. Thanks again for your comments. I haven't thought about this subject in a while and you've helped me clarify my thinking a bit more.
