Aspect ratios shouldn't be forced, I think 16:9 and 16:10 displays are the best because they can show whatever aspect ratio the creator wishes very well! The platform shouldn't enforce a size and everyone has their own needs. Also with the rise of OLED/Mini-led the issue of letterboxes is becoming less of a problem thanks to the letterboxes not being these ugly glowing black things, rather just pure black areas that blend in with the bezels.

I feel like the third person camera should be the camera on another character, and a second person camera is what we typically refer to as a third person camera. It feels like it makes more sense That being said, I do agree that the "first-person" and "third-person" terminology is definitely confusing and it makes more sense to abolish the terms all together.

I love 4:3, I definitely want to play around in the space, I think because 16:9 has dominated the space for so long, it's refreshing to have something fresh. I also think nostalgia plays a big part into it as well. What's old is new again!

1st, 2nd and 3rd person make sense to me. They're in the colloquialisms and they're not that difficult to understand what is meant by that label. There's no reason to stop using the label just because it's not completely accurate to what was originally intended by those terms.

However the Stanley parable does feel in line with that example of Second person from Jay Mclnerney, in fact when I read it I heard it in the narrator's voice from the Stanley parable.

Hey, the square is not that bad, I use it from time to time as the truly platform agnostic aspect ratio. Surely if you crop it to a measly 720x720 it is awful but if you shoot directly in 1:1 the sensor has to trim way less than 16:9. And if the "perfect simmetry" scares you then you just have to break it trough composition, that's just good practice in any aspect ratio. Either way nice essay!

I know the actual detail. Game must be such a way that game is about what an npc does in story but you control one of the people they see. You influence their decision like they chase you in a car and you lead them to a suburb for example. You need to have a player who is not you that game is about. But also you have to be influencing them directly for it to count 2nd person instead of ambiguous 3rd person. This story is about that npc. Not you. But you aren't a random person. You interact with them directly. This..... This is second person gameplay.

What if a 2nd person game is a game where you are given an exprience where the game is influenced by what the audience feels?
