I saw this episode as a full metaphor of being at your lowest moment (Rock Bottom) and how difficult it is to get out. The whole episode shows Rock Bottom as this deep, dark, and scary pit that’s basically impossible to escape. After trying again and again to get out and failing, Spongebob decided to seek help but not even the professional tried to help. Being unable to communicate with others and his best friend gone, Spongebob was completely isolated. It was all hopeless until one random stranger performed one act of kindness that was able help Spongebob out of Rock Bottom and safely back home. Sorry for the long comment I can get carried away sometimes

You have to remember that Stephen Hillenburg was a marine biologist. Rock bottom is a dark portion of the ocean and if you don't know, various species of fish live in this near pitch black portion of the ocean. Not to mention the fish in these dark portions have extremely monstrous appearances, to the point where they look alien, similar to the rock bottom residence. What I'm saying is, rock bottom seems more like a version of a deeper part of the ocean rather than some radiation bullcrap.

Rock Bottom just represents deep sea ecosystems. A lot of real-life deep sea fish look very weird/scary, so the way these deep sea fish are portrayed is very fitting. Also a lot of deep sea fish have bioluminescence, some even use it to attract prey. These fish glowing has nothing to do with radioactivity, it is simply because they are bioluminescent deep sea fish.

All I can say is that most of these fishes are actual deep sea fishes like the anglerfish you can see serval times in certain frame and eels. This is known that in certain regions there are glowing fishes despite having no sunlight. Forgot the science behind that but alot of deep sea fishes are luminescent when exposed to lights that the cameras had. Very interesting stuff.

After watching this theory video through once, i went back and took a look at the Rock Bottom bus station exterior. Has anyone noticed it looks oddly like the rear-end of a nuke? As if that was the very spot a nuke was dropped and the shell either survived after the blast, or the mechanism that was supposed to set it off was faulty and so it never exploded, but instead just sat for years slowly leaking its radioactive contents into the surrounding water.

Several things, first off when a nuke explodes it doesn't make sharp angles it makes rounded edges basically a crater if you will ,second most of the fish resemble real life deep sea fish in the ocean ,third real fish can glow and make light using a process called bioluminescence which is a fancy way of saying they have bacteria living in specific organs that produce light ,also with incedental 211 it could be he started life as a frogfish otherwise known as a shallow water anglerfish and exposure to the radiation cause him to adapt and aquire the glowing bacteria conversely he could be a natural angler fish and it could be that this was a different member of the same species it's highly plausible we didn't see the majority of rock bottom and that this is just a bus stop on the edge of town and the reason the one laid it's egg on top of SpongeBob and the reason why none of them attacked him is because he isn't their major food source he is a sponge not eaten by most things

Come on, are you serious. Steven was a marine-biologist, it makes obvious sense that rock bottom is simply an abyss. A nature abyss, which would explain the strange fish that adapted to its environment. It would also explain the 90 degree angle, as abyss usually go straight down. The fish aren't mutants, just evolved to their environment. And also, nukes have a hard time moving anything under water that isn't just water. And don't give me that excuse that we've seen abyss before in spongebob. You have to remember that abyss are deep and dark, and the ones in spongebob are shallow and light. What, not shallow you say? Even though it may look deep, you have to remember that the fish in spongebob are small, and we are seeing it from their prospective. Everything in the bikini bottom is made by fish, as well as the abyss sign. They must probably think that anything thats an underwater canyon is an abyss, as well as the ones that seem small to us. So there you have it, there's no big theory, its simply an abyss.

Even deeper conspiracy theory of rock bottom: Spongebob and Patrick were addicted to drugs and eventually hit "rock bottom". Patrick was able to rehabilitate and get out while spongebob was stuck in addiction no matter how hard he tried to get out of "rock bottom". As he's down there he sees the horror of what drug addiction can lead to, hence all the deep sea fish that are different and scary to him. Realization hits him as he does not what to become like that. In the end he eventually overcomes addiction and becomes sober, being able to get out of hitting rock bottom in his life and being stable again, and able to go back to his normal life. But then Patrick goes back to rock bottom claiming that his coming back to spongebob, but in reality he's going back to drug addiction hoping spongebob is there still so they can continue their horrible lives in rock bottom of their lives.

I personally think the two towns just don't like eachother that much since they are so different. The red fish could be a mix of bikini bottom and rock bottom roots. So he might have been more accepting and a reason why he speaks both languages. Since he resides in rock bottom he probably mainly uses that language and understands certain words or phrases from bikini bottom(Just a thought)😂

I’ll give you the sentient (sapient?) soil, but the glowing, odd-looking fish are representative of the types of sea life that live in deeper parts of the ocean, a lot of which look more and more bizarre the deeper they are and many of them possessing bio-luminescence, which is why these fish are glowing. Stephen Hillenburg himself was a marine biologist, so he probably just found these deep sea creatures fascinating and wanted a way to incorporate them into his show. Sorry if I sound like I’m spoiling your fun here, just wanted to spread a bit of knowledge that might be overlooked on this one.

Considering that the Mariana Trench and Bikini Atoll exist in the same part of the world, I interpreted Bikini Atoll as "Bikini Bottom" and the Mariana Trench as "Rock Bottom". The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of ocean in the world. The creatures in the episode have a lot of similarities with deep oceanic species

Assuming your theory about the Rockbottomites being dead were true, I really doubt "Incidental 211" (Where did that name come from?) was dead the first time. His death being, for one example, what made him forget his native language, makes more sense to me than him being dead the whole time. Yeah, this theory is definitely way overlooked/exaggerated lol the bus that they took 's next stop was to drop the riders off at rock bottom and SpongeBob & Patrick didn't realize this. SpongeBob & Patrick just took the wrong bus home. Even though SpongeBob annoys the citizens of Bikini Bottom a lot of the time, he doesn't always annoy them though and some enjoy his company; so, I don't think the citizens would hire a random citizen/bus driver to purposefully strand him there.

I think Rock Bottom language is just the same as Bikini Bottom with another accent and they weren't dead in the first season. However, it's possible they died when they grabbed that bus to Bikini Bottom because of the pressure change. In the case they were living abyssal fishes, it makes sense they rejected crabby patties since they are carnivorous. I came up with a similar theory: 1. Those fishes are living abyssal fishes in season 1. 2. Unlike most Bikini Bottom citizens, they age up and eventually die or are eaten by other abyssal fishes. These fishes don't have access to weed or non abyssal fishes, so they eat other abyssal fishes. 3. Once they are dead, their souls rise until Bikini Bottom that is their sky. That's why they are ghosts in the Krusty Krab. 3:33 Pearl doesn't have her hair.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this would be the case canonically speaking. 'Rock Bottom' most likely represents the dark, pitch black abyss of the deep ocean, which is filled with weird creatures in which some aren't even completely found out since the pressure down there is dangerous for anyone to be in. The weird, dark atmosphere reminds me of the 'Midnight Zone' of the ocean

I find this very far fetched. The deeper you go in the sea the weirder the creatures get and some of them actually glow. And it makes way more sense that Spongebobs grandpa simply knew about Rock Bottom because he has lived long enough to know about it’s existence instead of being left to rot down there. Also, I cannot imagine there being only 1 bus driver in the entire sea/area where Bikini Bottom is and the bus driver wasn’t shown in any of the busses that passed through. And how was he in all these different busses at the same time? The residents of Bikini Bottom are shown in some episodes with torches and pitchforks, so why would they plan something so extravagant if they don’t have a problem voicing their opinions otherwise? And lastly, why would they get rid of the person/sponge that grills the town’s best burgers? If there is a theory based on actual hidden hints that no one really payed attention to that’s great and believable. But this just seems like randomly taking something from the show and pushing one of trillions of different possibilities about what could’ve happened on it without anything that indicates something like that. To me the most logical theory is: Spongebob and Patrick accidentally stepped on the wrong bus, ended up in the deep sea which is obviously inhabited by very different sea creatures and Spongebob just has a bad day. 🤷🏽‍♀️ and maybe the same thing happened to his grandpa or someone he knows/knew. Edit: I wanted to add that I still enjoyed the video and I think it’s great to theorize, it makes the show way more fun! I will def check out your other videos.

10:16 in your diagram for why they glow you show an intake of light, which would be strange because there is perpetual darkness in rock bottom. The effect we see is bioluminescence, and it is extremely common and not related to an increase in radiation.

That red fish at rock bottom is an actual angler fish, you say he doesn’t want to go to bikini bottom, well that’s because he can’t. He’s a damn angler fish. The pressure would kill him. The reason he forgot to talk normal, is probably for jokes. His voice was deeper when he said “you’re welcome” So his actual language is tongue Language, he only said you’re welcome as a joke. Kinda like a white man talking to a Latino in Spanish, thinking he can’t speak English. But the Latino speaks perfect English. The fish took spongebob as racist so he showed him he can speak perfectly and fluently. As for the other rock bottomers, well they’re deep sea creatures. Who knows what other ugly fishes lie inside the abyss, because fishes like that actually do exist. And you’d know if you studied marine biology. Those are just normal trench fishes. Nothing radioactive about them. As for the sand talking. That one I can’t explain. But maybe it’s for jokes too to show how eerie the abyss really is. But your theory could still work. After all, the nuke not only affected bikini bottom, but the entire ocean

The fact that I have found myself in the exact same situation as SpongeBob and Patrick, when I missed my bus in a foreign country, where people spoke neither my language, not even basic English, makes this episode particularly scary to me. It was starting to get dark and the area was quite dangerous... Most of my efforts to make some sense of the situation, get a new ticket, find a safe space to stay, were effortless, which was so scary, since I had to do everything in a language I could only understand two or three words of. Most people were hostile and obviously didn't care about a lost foreigner, but luckily I found some kind folks as well, who helped me find my way. The thing SpongeBob says, "even the soil is different", felt so true to me in that situation. Even though I wasn't that far away from my country and there were many similar elements, buildings etc, things still felt different and kind of wrong. People looked similar, but not too similar, road signs, shops, food, even the air...

The fish from Rock Bottom are just fish that live in the deep ocean which have bioluminescence and are weird looking. Also nukes exploded above water and wouldn't make a crater. The rock bottom cliff is actually a natural formation like we see with Mariana Trench. These creatures look very similar to fish that live deep deep underwater where there is no light. But interesting episode.
