I remember many discussions about this from way back when. Nowadays, I'd say it doesn't really matter. No matter which title, I always enjoyed the combat - even the awful FF13 was really fun to play. The real loss of Final Fantasy lies somewhere else. Up to FF10 it was always two themes that were carrying: romance and the fight against darkness, sprinkled with moral dilemmas and belief in a spiritual sense. FFXII strayed from belief and focused more on a political struggle, romance was still in tact. After that it pretty much fell apart. FF13 was awfully written, FF15 was never the promised Versus13. Don't know enough about FF16 because at that point I didn't connect to what was shown. The battles didn't look that good, yeah - but that was true for FF13 as well. So I suppose, playing it would still be fun. But I want a JRPG, not political drama with MMO inspired mechanics. Not sure if I underestimate FF16 here, because apart from a few surprisingly engaging streams, I didn't pay much attention. Final Fantasy always had very memorable characters, be it Celes, Terra, Tifa, Aerith, Rinoa, Yuna, Garnet. Sure, Squall, Kefka, Sephiroth, Cloud, Edea and others were important too. But Lightning or Clive are just ...meh. Ashe, Fran & Balthier were still good, Vanille was a pleasant surprise within FF13. But to me, the question is much more about the characters and their adventures than the battle system. The battle system was sometimes oblique (specially FF13 needed a lot of time to getting used to), but always fun. I don't see the mistakes there. But the characters and stories were never what they were. Additionally, Remake/Rebirth does have some of the magic due to amazing animation quirks and the extension of the storylines and a better telling of the main story, but has so much stuff that just pushes me away (thanks for the multiverse nonsense), that I prefer to watch a playthrough than playing it myself - because I can skip the bad parts easily. Again, I don't blame the gameplay. Lastly your analysis is on point as well. There are turn-based games from Square. These are a niche market, so it's not something that you can consider for such a big title. It's a tricky situation for Square to be in. To me, even Nier: Automata (despite it's different setting) felt more like an old Final Fantasy than later Final Fantasies ever did. And that is down to the relationship of the characters, the underlying feelings of the main characters and most importantly due to the story telling. 2B is basically the poster that would have been Yuna in 2000. Lead characters to aspire to. Luna once was something like that - when it was Versus 13. So, as much as I agree with you, the problems of Final Fantasy are elsewhere in my opinion. Maybe the always looming expectation of what an open world means has never been solved either.

I gotta pount out that the FF characters aren't like the Disney characters in that their role in Kingdom Hearts is wholly original. They never had their FF game adventures because those worlds don't exist like the Disney ones. The FF characters look and maybe act like their counterparts but their stories are completely different from their original games.

I feel like the real reason Final Fantasy isn’t selling as well as Square Enix would like is because they’re limiting themselves to PS5 for so long. It certainly impacts their sales in the west very heavily. By the time these games come to other platforms, they’re no longer as interesting since they’ve technically been out for a year. I haven’t bought any of the FF7 remake. I got access to the first part on PS Plus at some point and played it through there. Had they launched it on PC sooner, I probably would have bought it. I bought Final Fantasy XVI, but hardly ever play it because it’s not on my preferred platform. Even though I’ve loved what I did play. Gameplay decisions have likely had an effect as well, but the way they choose to release these games definitely hurts their sales way more.

FF17 should be modern combat to invite the most new fans unfamiliar with turn based but still enjoyable/familiar to og FF RPG fans because modern AAA games take so much to develop! some of it is the lack of enjoyable gameplay (I'm only in mt. corel in ffvii rebirth and I got my game release day. and it's fucking terrible.) some of it is the weird cringe anime uwu shit they keep cramming into incorrect scenes. the older FF games weren't scared to take serious moments seriously. They weren't afraid of dark themes. The new ones are so weirdly sunshiney all the time and none of the stakes seem to feel like they matter.

I am not sure about this version. Years ago, on the GBA version, I was able to cheese the few final bosses left in the game, trying to dodge a lot of their Sleights, so that they only have little cards to only attack(You know, they have elixirs in their decks to refill their raging wild sleights). Perhaps the power of No Pants got you through this one. I still haven't completed this one on the PS2.

Something interesting When the games released initially, two of them were on PS2. KH1, KH2. People looked at COM, and thought "... GBA game of the franchise I like. It'll be like the GBA version of that GameCube Spongebob game won't it. Spinoff. Not worth playing." So, the large majority of players in that time played 1, then 2. Then Days came out on DS. So, people played that, and they were like "Holy shit, THAT's where he comes from!" So on so forth. So, Chain of Memories is in a weird position in this instance, where usually it gets played after Days because Days makes fans realize the spinoff games aren't actually spinoffs. Having played in the order of KH1, 2, Days, and RE:COM, COM is barely needed if at all. It's nice for a little bit of information, but its gameplay is the black sheep of the series. It's not very good, and it's very easy to cheese Sonic Blade even on the final boss. It's a real shame they turned Days into cutscenes, because the actual game does a lot to use the DS for doubled memories and things like that, and you end up missing a lot of context that is inherent from the game's initial design, which lessens its impact as cutsenes. COM should've been cutscenes, but not Days. Play Days in MelonDS with upscaling if you wish to actually play it.

Impressively thorough review of a new fan's honest 1st time experience in 2024 with sweet editing/effects especially mixing ReCoM with gba versions of the same scenes! ^_^ Very fair critique as well since majority of new KH fans these days or at least blindplay "reaction" streamers just youtube the ReCoM cutscenes rather than actually grinding the gameplay/bosses, so congrats/props getting the authentic KH experience! ;D Hopefully if CoM ever gets any "future" remake treatment, they'll consider redoing the combat like how FF7R's combat is fully reimagined/remodernized compared to og (not that there's anything wrong with 1997's ATB lol) XD I guess in 2004 it made more sense that the 2nd KH game ever "Chain of Memories" could be a bit more experimental in the gameplay by introducing radically different card combat rather than just trying KH1's standard action rpg battle system but in 2D gba. Then 2008's ReCoM team had many devs from gba returning, so I guess they wanted to stay faithful to the game/play they'd made already on gba but now in 3D on PS2? 🥲 Tho given how most KH games by now have stuck with the action rpg combat from KH1, KH2, and now KH3... That's why I say hopefully in case of any future ReCoM Remake possibility, they'll just straight up reimagine/remodernized the combat to be more like the rest of KH lol

Surprisingly enough I actually haven't played all that far into the GBA version of the game despite having the physical copy since well before the compilations came out. I guess I can chalk that up to not being as into KH back then as I became later on. But I'm very much looking forward to you playing KH2. It was my introduction to the series, and with how a certain element plays out at the beginning, I can tell you that I was right there with them in all the confusion and mystery and that really intrigued me. But I played KH2 when Re:CoM came out so it had been a while since KH2 was released and I spent a number of years on the internet seeing all these people talk about this game franchise and characters I knew nothing about so I was excited to meet Sora, Kairi and Riku! Really impatient. The meeting was bittersweet and I'll always love KH2 for giving me such a profound experience. But I still had no idea about the plot before then, and playing KH1 didn't actually help solve all the mysteries. Mysteries like "Why is it called Organization XIII but there are only like 6 members!" and how did Sora end up in the sleep chamber? Where did DIZ and Namine come from? It wasn't until playing CoM that I finally understood and the story became my favourite overall. I adore Namine so much.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: YES!

I can only tell you from my side. This game says "play me" in the way Baldurs Gate 03 (PC version) said "play me". Is the game a masterpiece? No, it does have weaknesses. One being the story, which is meh. But just as no one watches a Kung fu flick for it's story, the same goes for this game. The other was/is the English voices, I just can't stand them. I switched to the original (South) Korean voices with English subs ASAP. Good fun minigames, cans & costumes to find. You can bet that when the OST officially hits, I'll be adding that to my collection. In terms of data size, for all it gives you the game is fairly small, 25 GB.

When I look out my window I want to see gorgeous scenery and not landfill. This applies to fictional media I consume.
