Thanks for your inspiration! From time to time I played it myself, now I know what to play on Sunday ... This piece works pretty good on small organs too. It's an interesting interpretation with a very clear articulation. I like this very much. And a good exercise for the feet. Unfortunately it isn't to see ...

Thanks for listening! You know that I really like this kind of pieces to be played very transparent. Pedal cam? A lot of work (double editing time). Maybe I have to buy a steamer that does that for me…

@RienSchalkwijkКүн бұрын
Dank Nils. Ik heb mezelf de vrijheid gegund om het wat expressiever te spelen dan gebruikelijk. Dat geeft het voor mij een nieuwe frisheid. Want het is en blijft een mooi stuk! :-)

Thank you for transporting me back to my early teenage years when I remember learning this 'Bach' work with my organ teacher and absolutely loving it! The school chapel organ I played for my lessons was a fabulous instrument - very English - though it did not sparkle as much as the Martinikerk sample set with its generous acoustic that you chose for this recording. Some 'purists' might question your (mild) rubato approach to the tempo . . . but I never find a robotic approach to Baroque music satisfying and I much prefer your sincere musical interpretation, which always comes from the heart: bravo, Rien! (I wept in my twenties when I learned that the school organ was so badly damaged after the chamber was flooded that it was scrapped and replaced with an electronic instrument. It had been underinsured and the rebuild costs were prohibitive. All I have is memories. Not only are there many forgotten composers . . . there are many lost organs and their numbers continue to increase. Thank goodness for Hauptwerk!)

Thanks Graham! I got several insights from Ralph Looij and others about “Baroque” practise. The most significant is that the use of clear mathematical structures in written music (which of course was the common way in composing in the baroque era) doesn’t mean that it has to be played “cold” like a “Czerny-Ubung”. Bach's music can to my humble opinion benefit greatly from a more expressive interpretation. Adding a touch of rubato can bring out the emotional depth and beauty of the music, allowing for a more personal and artistic performance. And as long as there are “Grahams” who like my approaches in music, I can live with the occasional critical purist! :-)

Delicious interpretation. I previously thought this piece was too uninteresting to play, but you have managed to turn it into quite a captivating moment.
@RienSchalkwijkКүн бұрын
Agree! I think this piece is often rushed as if people want to show how quickly they can play it. If done in that matter all details and exiting contrasting harmonies disappear and it becomes merely a practise piece.

Your registration choices for this Léon Boëllmann 'Canzona' featuring the Goebel Organ's glockenspiel makes for a novel interpretation of the music for certain . . . and as you say, maybe just a little bit crazy! As it is such a short piece, I would have been interested to hear the music played 'straight' on the Van Peteghem Organ in a consecutive performance just to illustrate how the performer's selection of stops can transform the way the listener experiences the music. And it is such a charming piece that it deserves to be repeated. Bravo, Rien!
