My biggest problems with iPad OS are the walled garden of mostly mediocre smart phone style apps, the files app, and the awful web kit. If I am going to spend £3k on a M4 iPad Pro and accessories it needs to also be a laptop replacement and do everything my MacBook Pro can. It doesn't necessarily need to run Mac OS, but I want to have complete freedom of choice to sideload any apps I want, have the capability to format, repair and image external SSDs and memory cards, and run VMs (I was able to do the later in a limited way on M1 iPad Pro, but then Apple made sideloading UTM even more difficult when upgrading to iPad OS 17). Mac OS no longer works for me due to the lack of a touch display and stylus support. Consequently, I am moving away from purchasing any more Apple iPad Pros and MacBooks. I've spent the past year getting all my apps, web apps, virtual machines, games, retro game emulation, and developer tools I use to work of Windows 11 arm. I plan to buy a Microsoft Surface Pro 11 with Snapdragon X Elite processor, because that will better meet my needs, than the messy combination of iPad Pro and M2 MacBook Pro. My understanding is Apple has been struggling with iPad Pro sales, and it looks to me that the M4 iPad Pro will exacerbate the problem rather than improve it. I agree for some people iPad OS really works, but I suspect the M2 iPad Air has all the technical capability they need plus still has some to spare that cannot be fully utilised by iPad OS 17. But as it stands, iPad OS makes the M4 iPad Pro with all its amazing technology the most pointless product in Apple's product portfolio.

Now Windows 10 and 11 have left the tablet experience to whither and die. It is extremely frustrating to use a Windows tablet without a mouse and keyboard. The desktop mode must be gate kept to prevent the ecosystem from ignoring the tablet UI. It doesnt have to be particularly onerous, just enough to make it clear that it is a tablet that can do deskop stuff rather than a laptop that can do tablet stuff. Chrome OS has an option burried deep in the settings to enable full access to the Debian backend. Perhaps something similar and only on the pro models.

People asking for macOS on an iPad is just a knee jerk reaction. What they actually mean is they'd like the freedom of macOS on iPadOS. I think you hit the nail on the head with the shortcomings of iPadOS, which are multitasking / background services, and access to shared storage, example your home directory. These two things alone, which already built into the kernel and file system, but artificially limited, can be easily enabled. Take something as simple as web development, you need multiple applications to access the same set of files simultaneously, i.e. access to shared storage. Now iOS and iPadOS allow you to request access to certain shared folders like Downloads, and macOS just gives you access to a user selected location. You also need background services, like a live server to monitor file changes, and then the browser to re-render based on triggers from the live server. Many of these limitations made sense in the early days of iOS when CPU and battery constraints actually prevented you from having this sort of freedom. However, the hardware has come a long way since then. Removing some of the artificial constraints built into iPadOS will go a long way to enabling a ton of workflows, making the iPad more than a companion device. I think it was Steve Jobs who said that you should cannibalize your own marketshare before someone else does it. Let the iPad eat into the Mac marketshare, before Windows eats into the Mac and iPad marketshare. I know never to set expectations before WWDC, because I'm always left disappointed, but if Apple doesn't unshackle iPadOS in 2024, Windows on ARM will definitely take away a lot of potential iPad customers.

While I have already traded in my old iPad Pro on the new one, I look forward to WWDC and hope for one or more new capabilities. However, not to an open system, not to a system with local programming. I value the fact that nothing can be done from the iOS UI to compromise the application and system code on which I rely. While I avoid clicking on bait, I value the fact that should I do so, I will not likely corrupt my machine. My iPad cannot be easily turned against me or my neighbors. That’s not how Apple said it happened, nor does it make sense given the Mac-specific IP in the M chips that the iPad still can’t fully utilise. The Apple Silicon project apparently started with the Mac in mind, and when it came to building the first Mac chip, it was specifically designed for the Mac using common foundations like core designs. This is a good read: arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/11/we-are-giddy-interviewing-apple-about-its-mac-silicon-revolution/

@ConstantGeekery7 ай бұрын
@@deavo74 * they are based on common foundations like core designs. Just like JLR uses the same engines in Jaguars and Land Rovers… the other stuff around the engine is important too. M chips were designed with specific functionality to enhance macOS. iPadOS has been modified to use some of that functionality, but not all of it. The A12Z was used in the Developer Transition Kit, but being an iPad chip it lacked essential Mac functions, like virtualisation support. It was sufficient for developers to get started, and could run macOS and do most of it thanks to the fact that iOS was derived from macOS in the first place. This is one of the genius decisions that allowed the Silicon design journey to progress so nicely - core designs could be tested and proven in the wild on iPads and iPhones. To simply say the M chips are iPad chips, is a massive over-simplification of a long and complex journey that always had the Mac as the end goal. Some have even said that “Apple made an A14X that was too good, then decided to put in a Mac and call it M1”, which is demonstrably not true. Fun fact: Apple were joint shareholders with Acorn when ARM was branched into its own company.

As long-in-the-tooth as it is (and as much as I am envious of my daughter's M1 iPad Pro) I love using my 2017 iPad Pro as an iPad and wouldn't want to change that experience. Buuut... as iPad Pros become increasingly powerful on the hardware side and Macbook Pros become increasingly expensive, I do begin to want to be able to do everything - work and play - on the one device. To replace my M1 Max MBP with the exact equivalent M3 Max MBP, for eg, will cost $1050 more than I paid 2 years ago. I think my relatively simple 4K editing workflow would work on an iPad Pro with 16GB Ram, though being able to do other tasks while rendering out from FCPX or Davinci, as well as better file management (reliability/integrity being paramount) would be necessary. There are a couple of Mac apps that I use in my work that seem unlikely to get iPadOS versions or that have iPadOS versions which have been de-featured by their developers, unfortunately. I'd personally be happy with a dual-booting or emulation solution, even if it was dependent upon connecting to a specific Apple keyboard.

And i still use the hell out of that little ipad and it has been a beauty . I just use it for harry suburban stuff , emails , browsing the web , watching KZbins , the very occasional tinkering with basic photo touch up , and it follows me around the house everywhere . As far as the form goes , and features , i actually like the previous chunkier pro ipad models that also had the wide angle camera , why apple had to make the thing as thin as thin as an LP , i`ll never know . That's the core problem: Apple will continue tinkering with iPadOS as minor updates while the tablet market sales hold up. I'd be surprised if Apple is not already working on this in a secret lab somewhere internally: If you look at the latest iPad Pros they're converging rapidly on Macbooks so Apple knows which side it's toast is buttered on for the future. Probably more integration with AI of course with the NPU baked more into the OS for automation and interaction (input eg voice, video/screen, typing etc). No doubt Windows 12 will go as similar way and more modular per form factor for background tasks/daemons. Right now, Apple will just keep tinkering with iPadOS leaving it in a half-cooked state unfortunately as it's limited at it's core considering the new hardware. Main issue with the above for Apple is the monetization of software App Store and MacOS Apps. They can easily charge an arm and a brain (pun intended) for the new device so that won't immediately eat into tablet or laptop sales but monetizing the software and unifying the stores across devices is probably their end-game... And why not if they provide what people need sufficiently, securely and reliably.

My biggest problem with using the iPad Pro exclusively is that it just doesn’t have ALL the software I need. For instance, last year I did art for a game show. I literally had to set up an old desktop just to run the one niche program they used to handle their file transfers and storage. That’s just one of thousands of applications that are so specialized they just don’t have financial incentive to make tablet versions. This is my experience, I am not saying one is better than the other for everyone. I chose to go with the iPad Pro and sell my MacBook Pro about 5 years ago. I’ve never looked back. For this list, I’m comparing the M4 iPad Pro 13 to the current MacBook Pro 14 M3 Pro: Hardware: 1. Versatility - The ability to interact with the device in many ways. In “Laptop Mode” with the Magic Keyboard I can go from using my fingers, Pencil, trackpad/mouse, and keyboard all seamlessly. Or in “Clipboard Mode” with just the tablet and pencil/touch I can read, watch, draw/annotate, and show/demo something for someone. There are so many ways to hold/use the iPad vs the MacBook Pro. 2. Thinner and lighter, even with the Magic Keyboard . This is important to me as I’m constantly on the go. 3. I prefer FaceID over TouchID. For me it’s always worked more reliably and quickly. 4. OLED > Mini LED. Not a huge difference, but in the dark and in bright sunlight, the OLED sure is nice. 5. Camera on back for scanning documents, or snapping a quick environmental photo (can also do so more discreetly vs taking out your phone). 6. I’m not sure if this is true, but I’ve always felt like the iPad was a bit more durable than the MacBook. Software: 1. Simplicity - I don’t need more complex desktop apps or deep menus. Yes, the MacBook Pro generally has more feature rich software and capabilities, but I have found that those are overkill for me. I am able to run my business using Zoom, iWork apps, and web-based software. For my hobbies, I use GarageBand, LumaFusion, Lightroom, etc. I am able to do everything on the iPad Pro. I could do everything on the MacBook Pro too, but with an inferior interactive experience IMO. 2. Apps like GarageBand, Lightroom, DJ, Notes, FreeForm, LumaFusion, etc. are more enjoyable with the touch interface and Pencil support. Other apps like News and Books are more enjoyable to read while holding the iPad in tablet mode vs the MacBook. 3. Apps open and close instantly. It’s lightning fast to swipe and switch apps. I love being able to drag an app from the dock to quickly enter split screen. 4. I like the ability to alternate between simple multi-tasking (split screen and slide over) and Stage Manager when using my external monitor. 5. Slide Over is very handy (I always have Calculator, Contacts, ChatGPT, Notes sitting in Slide Over). I use the calculator a lot for work, so it’s great to be able to swipe from the right and do a calculation and then swipe it away. It’s also quicker/easier to tap the numbers on the calculator (touchscreen) on the iPad. 6. There are some native apps that don’t exist for the Mac that I use (Arlo, Insta, KZbin, games, etc.) 7. The iPad and iPhone operate very much the same way and most of the apps are universal, so it’s easier to go back and forth between an iPhone and iPad than it is between an iPhone and a Mac IMO. GarageBand is a good example (you can pick up where you left off on the iPad and work on a song on the iPhone).

It felt like the future. Then when the M1 came out I was ecstatic! One of the most powerful chips of the time in an iPad? Yes, this will be awesome. And I bought one, and the Magic Keyboard and Pencil. It's an awesome device, I use it a lot. But there are some important stuff that it won't, and that's by choice. I code a lot for work. I use an M3 Max MBP. But it's a 16" so it's not the most portable of machines, and also is quite expensive to carry around all the time for just the off chance I might need it. There are so many times I want to run a small piece of code in the iPad, and I can't. Why? because Apple won't let me. Test codes like this could be run in raspberry pi, or a $200 android tablet with performance to spare. But not on an iPad with a chip more powerful than most computers. And when people say its not what it's made for. Running simple codes is such a lightweight thing to do that you can do it in the most underpowered devices out there. It would literally cause no issue whatsoever for Apple to allow us to have a pseudo terminal or an app with proper access to libraries, and for it to have access to a decent amount of the CPU. Currently only a few apps exist and they are all bad. None allow multicore processing. None allow ML libraries. And then people talk about remote servers. If I am to use a remote server 1) I have to have my data non-locally, which is not always easy especially when dealing with big files, and 2) why the hell do we have chips like that if we have to use servers or remote to a Mac? And to those who say that oh you should by a MacBook Air for that, I already have the iPad as an essential part of my workload, I already have Apple's best Mac, why do I need to be forced to by an additional machine like a base M1 Air, which is gonna be worse than the iPad since it doesn't have touch, and is never gonna be used as a computer as I have the MBP. They really argue that I should buy a machine just to carry around just because they are too greedy to allow some super basic and ultra lightweight code running to work? Tbh I would like iPadOS on the iPad as it would solve my problems, but even not doing that and allowing access to a pseudo terminal for coding or through an app it would solve my problem. The iPad Pro could have been the device of the future. Have that as a portable device, and a Mac Studio back home. But apple decides to stay in the past.

I mean Samsung does it with Dex just steal that idea I don’t see why it’s such a huge deal boot into iPadOS normally but than have the option too open a desktop version of iPadOS that supports browsers and Mac OS apps like Samsung Dex and boom easy

DeX is not dual boot. All DeX is is a windowed UI, you still run Android apps. Apple already has Stage Manager that does similar.
