5W out on a spark gap, with all that RFI strong enough to left artifacts on the camera. That is why that transmitter style was eventually banned. Imagine the RFI on the ham bands from a spark gap at 100W or 500W out....no one would get anything done on the bands.

Our Club was blessed with John Hunt K7XE. He was an Engineer for Collins Radio in the late 40 into the 50s if I remember correctly. He eventually was given the job of traveling and demonstrating the Collins Radio Equipment. One of the perks was always having the latest and greatest equipment. He even showed us the Collins QSL Cards that he would send out. John is still around and is 97 now. Still gets on the air for a couple of nets. Also likes to participate in various SSB contest. It's nice to hear some of the history and see some of the early equipment restored and in working order. Keep it up. Gary KF6EWO

These guys never buy anything... they always "Aquire" them. Sam was quite a charactor.. he combed the country raiding dead theaters to buy up old Western Electric audio stuff, 35mm projectors, and similarly rare and antique transmitters. This collins is relatively modern in terms of his collection. I remember Sam walking out of a ham auction with a Heathkit Mohawk Reciever, why everybody was laughing at him. That is how it was about 1985... before tube type AM gear became collectable. The whole AMI thing had yet to be invented. 3870 was inhabited in N.Cal by the SPAM net with W7INK Professor Bill Neely at the helm. 3870 was chosen to keep clear of the nation wide activity on 3885 at night. Southern california was essentially not a player at all, we had Arroyo Grande in central cal, a charactor living in a trailer out in the desert using a converted Public Address amplifier as a modulator, and ______ ( mind goes blank) near Hisperia showing us how to use screen modulation well in a 400 watt transmitter. Other than that, it was N.Cal all the way, with a few check-ins from Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona, with several BC-610s, globe kings and the usual assortment of Johnson, Heathkit, and B&W transmitters in the 100 watt class. In those days 80's and early 90s a B.C. transmitter was a rare thing. With the passing of Bill K7INK and the rise of AMI, the focus shifted to SoCal, with the loss of almost all N.Cal participation, and no more oregon at all, and the net devolved into essentially a repitious check-in net. The big collectors have their own world..and here we see some of it. This big gear ONLY survives through the interest, skillful efforts and resources of these collectors. The reality is that we are all only custodians of these working antiques, which will outlive us all.

you have a very nice set up. I especially liked the Johnson equipment, as my first station was a Viking Challenger transmitter and Lafayette KT-320 receiver. I know it's not ham gear but i couldn't help notice the Admiral TV set on the shelf in your garage. I had one like it that I inherited from a friend of my dad, it worked but needed work. I sold it to a friend who has restored it.

For those not familiar with the WN prefix, in those days when you got your novice license you received a call beginning with WN, the N stood for novice and when you upgraded the 'N' was removed from your call sign. So his call was WN6QCZ and when he upgraded he was issued W6QCZ. This practice lasted until the FCC ran out of 1 by 3 W and K calls.

Once upon a time, in the late '50s or early '60s, I went for a visit to my grand parents's home. Across the road was the stone house that was made of thousands of stones glued together with cement. Behind it was the "Old Barn" which was filled with stuff going back to the 1800s. There was a old radio in there with huge radio tubes in it with silver contacts coming out of their tops. They were the size of a can of Coke. It was the winter time & I took one of them & carried it across the road in my hot little hand. I had to piss so I went in the house to do so. There was a thin coating of snow on the ground, & I figured I'd toss the tube out in the yard where it'd be cushioned by the snow & then get it again when I came back out. The family dog, a German shepherd was laying in the snow there & without looking, I tossed the tube. The glass of the tube was warm from my hand when it hit the cold snow, it couldn't take the change in temperature & shattered. It landed right beside the doggie & made a bang like a shotgun. The dog got up, cussed & swore like a drunken sailor on shore leave & stormed away in a huff.
