I'm not a razor guy. So how are the stones on pocket knives and hunting knives? Please 🙏

Steel is steel. These are similar to Shapton Glass Stones.

Hi Keith. Nice 👍 very informative. I have zero experince in honing. I will look at the shapton pro 1,5 5 and 8k. Have a good rest of your week

As always, an enjoyable video Keith! SP 2k is my bevel setter, usually followed by the SP 5k. I have a Snow White 8k, but usually after the 5k I move to naturals. Lately that has been a coticule followed by a JNat.

What’s up Bro! Excellent video and thank you for the shout. As a Shapton 1.5 user I’ve always been conflicted on how to proceed afterward, 2 and 3K are sort of too small of a jump, 4 or 5K always made more sense because the 6K doesn’t provide the linear refinement I’m looking for after 1.5. I’m going to have to try this one, the Naniwa 3K has clayish feel to it that’s annoying while the Sharpening Supplies version is a bit gritty but effective. Completely agree with you on the Kings, they feel almost barbaric on razors. Take care and thanks again for your continued attempts to bring balance to the honing universe, things are getting crazier by the day.

Two factions - mental and practical. In a practical sense, the 2k pro sets up 1.5k work for the 5k nicely, even though it's not necessary and 'only' 1/2 a K finer. The mental perspective does not agree, it says 3k is more than 2k and closer to the middle of 1.5k vs 5k - so it's better. The 3k Chosera was probably my all time favorite stone for that 'middle' but they cracked and I quit. I may try again so I can appease both sides of the brain. This Rockstar 3k would fit in perfectly, it's just not the feedback I'd prefer. I have several 4k stones but they force me, mentally, to go to the 6k HC Glass Stone afterwards because the brain says 4k to 5k is not 'enough'. And then I am nearly in "8k" zone and I leave synths in the 3-5k zone. Honestly, the 1.5k to 5k Pro has worked perfectly for me for a long time, proving the 3k superfluous in a practical sense. Mentally though, that's another story.

@@KeithVJohnson1 Mental and practical are two very tangible considerations but when you add feel it can throw both of those into a tailspin. When coming off the 1.5 my fingers and brain are looking for whatever coming next to be “smoother” or less gritty. When I jump from 1.5 to 5K I feel a big refinement gap both in a sensory and topography point of view, the Naniwa 3 feels to me like Norton 8 in this instance, weird, I know but that’s that fun in all this stuff, most thing are subjective and highly personal. On another weird thing, for me getting to the point where I can use Purple Haze properly I need the means need to justify the end. I could go 1.5K/5K/8K or 10K to jnat or Charnley Forrest but the affects of PH are more evident if I go 1.5K/3K/6K/10K and jump off then, the 3K is very important for me in this progression and worth the extra work. Fun stuff.

Question for both of you. I've been making do with going from 1.5 pro to 4k Hayabusa for a while but I have been thinking about something to slot in between so I don't have to spend as much time on the Hayabusa. Do you think this 3k would be a plausible option or would the 2k pro be better? It's not really about results because the 4k Hayabusa will get me there, I just don't enjoy honing on it.

What’s the difference of the rock star stone and glass stone? Are they the same just without the glass?
@KeithVJohnson14 ай бұрын
They're thicker, and I believe the binder and abrasive recipe has been changed, altered, updated, modernized, etc. What that means at the end of the day is anyone's guess.

How do they do on super steel knives? Thinking of getting 3k and 6k for finishing up knives
@KeithVJohnson16 ай бұрын
They're pretty much like Glass Stones. Slight changes but very similar to Glass Stones. If you are referring to Super Blue Steel, this Rock Star 3k did fine.

How do they do on softer stainless or finer stainless like AEBL? Considering getting set of these for one snd done
@KeithVJohnson16 ай бұрын
These Rockstars stones are pretty much thicker versions of Glass Stones with slight changes in grit assignments that probably don't affect anyone or anything all that much. This 3k has sharpened everything I have run across it without issue. I like it better than a GS because it's thicker and I don't have to worry about chipping the glass. Past that, it's a stone, it works well enough, price was good, does the job....can't go wrong here I think. But if you own Glass Stones it might be redundant.
@sryslyuguys6 ай бұрын
@@KeithVJohnson1 I don't only any glass stones, but am considering between a set of these or a set of Naniwa pro/chosera. Maybe shapton glass 500/1k/2k/4k perhaps, or a Naniwa pro 400/800/3000

Great video, Keith. Soon, my Shapton HR 1k will be completely worn through, lasting a bit more than one year since I bought it. I use it quite a bit, it’s not just a weekend thing. Besides a HR 1k replacement, I was thinking to get also one set from this new series and your video is tempting me even more! Cheers and wish you many happy honing sessions!
@KeithVJohnson18 ай бұрын
Yeah, the Glass Stone 1k wears fast, and the thin layer makes the situation more difficult. I don't enjoy that stone all that much, tbh. At the very least, the Rockstar is much thicker and it 'should' last much longer.
@diavalus8 ай бұрын
@@KeithVJohnson1 yes, that’s what I am thinking with the RockStar series. The HR 1k is probably my least favorite from the 5-6 HR stones which I have, but I use it for certain tools and not for razors, so I don’t mind it that much because those tools are my beaters which I misuse all the time.
