I’ve seen that’s guys videos once or twice and he always seemed like a scumbag. He just has that vibe. I don’t watch him, believe him or plan on purchasing anything he’s associated with.

I knew about the BBE situation and in my opinion that was water under bridge, I mean that was a decade ago, but I had no idea Mason was this shady until Dave Phillips told me himself when I was at his shop. I looked into the BBE scandal the other day and left with bag full of absolutely slimy stuff. I'm not gonna add to the Mason hate but what I will definitely do is ignore his videos or any input from him from now on. I ain't touching his products either.

PRS is a good designer but is waaayyu over-hyped. The wood matters very little in an electric guitar. This has been demonstrated many times. All if his products are far too expensive and are just branding and marketing, like most products shilled on YT.

As a guitarist I can tell the difference between a Gibson Les Paul and it's Epiphone counterpart even if it has the open book headstock. And everything else is easier to tell from there. Price point considered the consumer these days still has a better chance of buying a Chibson than mistaking any other brand for one.

That's "my" guitar center in Brooklyn as well. No tthe best assortment or selection. Still fun to go habg a few times a year.

Electrical signal sure but string resonance depends on the way the strings reacts with the wood. If you would play 2 of my basses a Fender Vintera 70s Jazz bass w/ bolt on neck and my PRS Kestral with neck through . Both have nearly identical passive electronics , high mass bridges . The 2 basses react and sound completely differently . Due to the wood configuration . I have 2- G&L 2000 with exactly the same electronics and hardware , one is ash and one is poplar they sound quite different.

I guess I just got a good one, or should I say an excellent one. It’s definitely on my never sell list.

A great way to publicly disprove Paul would be to strip out a really high end PRS (hardware and electronics) and install the works into some cheap offshore guitar. Record the PRS first with a variety of tones, and then the recipient guitar playing exactly the same things.

Would Dimarzio sue every dc humbucker builder? No, probably not. Mark Greasy and his filthy t-shirt would. $10,000.00 for a brand new guitar. Gibson is insane. Their fanboys with more money than intelligence will buy em up. The insurgent democrat blows my mind. Ill order the Chibson version, throw in a pair of Dimarzios, swap tuners and electronics, and when it's over, I'll have $500.00 in it and it will be just as good as the $10,000.00 one.

Speakers probably make the biggest difference . They make a more audible difference than pickups do in my experience. Swapped alot of pickups and speakers and now i dont bother with the pickups for the most part .

Paul Reed Smith has another line he often uses, “Anything the string touches is God.” Absolutely, hard to disagree there, whether it’s the bridge saddles, fret material, your pick material, or whether you instead pick with either a fingernail or the fleshy part of your fingers, etc. We can also add to that, anything the electrical signal touches is God. But here’s the thing: Neither a guitar string nor the electrical signal are touching the body wood.

What about “Chibsons?” Wouldn’t/couldn’t DEAN use the influx of these guitars as part of generic bias, as well as Gibsons lack of defending their trademarks and patents against those companies, as a defence for DEAN? - Gibson has to go after everyone… not just 1 company.

This might be a dumb question. Do these trade marks ever run out? Like patterns do. After enough years will any company be able to use a Gibson head stock?

Gibson already started selling double cream humbuckers a year or so ago, but they’re calling them “double classic white.” They only used them on ‘57 classics, and they sold out immediately. In your opinion, was this some kind of legal test? I know they filed to cancel DiMarzio’s trademark in 2023.

Sadly with the Gibson company challenging as many other companies as they are and some of the gaffs from some of their high profile representation... I get why Gibson is protecting itself and it claims to "properties" (?) ... But it's nauseating at the same time because I am on board with Gibson products but the people running things and representing them in spotlight videos and product spotlights REEEEAAAALLY TURN ME OFF personally.... Just don't register with the current "faces" ... Don't feel bad about it either ... Tired of the "talking heads" , smug attitudes .... I think that they'll lose the color configuration trademark. I wonder if the phrase "Double Cream" might be able to be trade marked, if the use of the word "cream" ,to describe an off white color, following the word double, to describe two similar bobbins, was popularized by someone associated with DiMarzio. The color configuration itself, there is no way that should be able to be trademarked. However, if they lose the color, they'll probably lose the phrase too.

If this would result in a judgement against DiMarzio, would DiMarzio have grounds to bring legal action, or complaints to the bar association against that lawyer?

I sort of question your budgeting, and sort of agree with you. Yes, pretrial activity leading up to the first day of trial is the bulk of the expense. But a new trial doesn't start over as if it was the first day of trial again. You back up to a few weeks or months before that first day. Sometimes you have to retake expert depositions because in the five years since the trial an expert or two have passed away. There might be something about the appellate ruling that requires limited additional discovery. All those in limine motions are getting filed again. If Gibson is using a Big Law firm, they've got a partner on the file billing at more than $1k per hour, with probably three or four additional attorneys who bill at between $600 and $900 per hour. And with Big Law comes things like getting to pay a second time for the preparation of a motion in limine on issue X or Y, so you get to repay some of those prep costs. And some of that repayment is totally legit-I've got to read through all the depos again a few times so that all that stuff is at my fingertips again. If I had to guess, Phil has talked to someone who has seen a budget estimate of $3M, which probably constitutes a Big Law firm covering their butt by laying out the budget for a worst case scenario. So I agree that Phil's number is probably not real, but if Gibson is using Big Law on this case, I wouldn't be surprised for the retrial to cost seven figures. Low seven figures, like right at $1.0M, or maybe $1.2M. But I'd doubt they'd bring the trial at something like $300,000. Now, if Gibson is using a small, boutique firm that runs their cases a lot tighter, then yes, they might get through a retrial for $300,00 or $400,000. It's not an unreasonable estimate-but it depends wildly on who is billing and who is willing to pay those bills.

I'm guessing it won't have a huge impact on DiMarzio. I knew about them way before I knew about their double-creme trademark. Sure, it's a nice-to-have as a trademark, but it's not gamebreaking. I could literally just buy bobbin-toppers to get the same look if I wanted to.

Great video! Does Dimarzio's protection of their trademark make a difference when comparing the two cases? Gibson under Norlin didn't seem to get sue happy over trademarks until the Japanese LP copies got out of hand in the late 70s.

The Mark Greasy and Gibson vs Dean judgement has just been reversed. Going to have to do it all over again. They probably should have said something about the V and Explorer shapes a little sooner. Can't let someone build your guitar for 73 years and then decide to complain.
