We have a negativity bias that draws us to the type of salacious drama that social media amplifies. It also encourages people to say things that they would otherwise never say in person. The anonymity combined with the lack of immediate consequences is a recipe for bringing out the worst of humanity.

I'm not sure if this is common but every other post I saw as I was scrolling was some terrible clip of people fighting or someone getting killed or otherwise just something vile and shocking. Such things have always been on the internet but to see it so casually presented was appalling. I can't imagine how many kids are just scrolling though these clips gripped by morbid curiosity and becoming desensitized to atrocity and violence like it's a big joke.

What I find most interesting about the likes of Sam - mostly that he’s anti-intellectual. Would never have guessed it, seeing as he’s primarily an intellectual… We won’t be rid of social media. So we have to view it as a part of our existence - Sam wants us to be rid of part of ourselves, to act as if that part of us isn’t real (if we close our eyes, stamp feet, and delete content that rubs us the wrong way). For good, or ill, that part of human existence is now very real. Die hard liberals, the fundamentalist free market types, I think will soon find out that you can’t have your cake and eat it - we either start to reign in the excess of big enterprise (big food, pharma, finance, ‘social media’ algorithms) or we have to become very illiberal in shutting down the freedoms of individuals… Oddly, the elephant that I see; is that we need a little Marxist wrapped in trad conservative to fix what is happening, structural policy that curbs excess of market forces plaguing humanity. But both types of mentality (Marx/Trad Conservatives) are a sure fire way to become ostracised from polite society. So then we’re left with smart people like Sam to tell us all we should not be us. We’re not allowed to be human - much better to box us off and pretend only right minded folk get to talk policy.

Isn't it interesting that these two so called relatively intelligent people by societal mores standards, actually needed the attention of those on twitter to validate their egos/fame, thus, their whole locus of evaluation attributed to how abhorrent theirs and other 'comments' are received on twitter. And then the audacity to blame twitter for these comments. Recalling here Peterson's, for example, comments that Piers Morgan challenged him about, and yet again he blamed twitter for them. And this person advocates free will and personal agency, thus taking responsibility for our actions as fundamental to growth and development as a human being. Goodness me... I wonder if they are actually capable of having a real conversation, one on one, with another person and enabling the Inbetweeness that emerges thereof, the phenomenological experience to arise from true, authentic and empathic dialogue, and an 'I thou' rather than I it' relationship. Or are they only capable of interacting on a platform like a stage, and/or with a non sentient, inanimate object and then blame that entity for their own inhumanity and verbal indiscretions.
