Photolab 8 looks great. But such a disappointment that they still don’t allow previewing of the contents of sub-folders. It’s a baffling oversight for such a well thought-out application.

I only wonder if they did that would it impact performance? As soon as I click on my main photos folder the software is trying to load 10s of thousands of image thumbnails. Not sure. But maybe a preference toggle for those like you who use that approach

This is particularly GREAT advice, since I just got word from Photolab (ticket #501046) that “they don’t have any information regarding teathering and DxO Photolab 8” 😏 I’ll send a link to this video! Now it’s only a question about Sony’s Control Monitor app (which replaced Imaging Edge) supports Live View…

Thanks for a very informative series on PL8 so far. XD2 is incomparably better than XD. I gave up on XD early as it tended to look nasty, especially for people photos. Deep Prime is still amazing, and it's great now to have a choice of two excellent NR functions.

I like DXO (using PL7 a lot) and have a trial version of PL8. I see no reason to update at this time with my current PC. ACDSee 2025 does a comparable noise reduction at speeds 5-10 times faster than PL8 ony older PC. Comparing an image side by side I see little difference.
@dxflow3271Күн бұрын
That is interesting to me. I downloaded ACDSee 2025 as a trial but never spent much time with it. I will have a look when I get a chance. I am not surprised that it is faster on an older machine, but I will be very curious about quality. But as I have often said, noise reduction is not the reason I use Photolab, it is just a wonderful bonus for me.

I use Fujifilm. And Photolab 6. Trying the new noise reduction, 6 vs 8. Exported 10 images. Compared very carefully. Absolutely no difference. Rechecked to see if they were really from the two different versions… yep. No difference…
@dxflow3271Күн бұрын
To be expected from my understanding. I believe because of the way DxO does both demosiacing and denoising at the same time, it is taking them extra time to sort it out for the Fuji sensors. I don't have a Fuji so I am not way up on this, but I think that is true.
@veselahladno89173 сағат бұрын
The thing is fujifilm has x-trans sensor that is not supported at the moment and even dxo photolab 8 still uses deeprime xd 1, but they're planning to add support for fujifilm to deeprime xd2s.

When are the new demosaic and noise reduction tools coming to DxO Pure RAW? Presumably, DxO Pure RAW 5? I find Photolab far too cluncky yo use as an everyday editor ... dream come true when they added the best bits to a simple, stand-alone app in Pure RAW.
@dxflow3271Күн бұрын
PureRaw has DeepPRIME XD2... but I have no idea if it will upgrade to XD2s... or if they will try to bring the next generation to PureRaw 5 and leapfrog to XD3. Hard to predict.

Another consideration - if you are shooting a LOT of teathered shots - you are writing to the laptop’s SSD (rather than downloading to an external SSD or HDR) and - deleting - from a laptop’s SSD requires that you run tools to recover that drive space (ineffectively so Apple can sell more hardware 🤬) so there is a trade-off down the line in being able to see your work immediately on a nice monitor… (But, at least, it’s not an iPhone where can never “get back” used SSD space… unless you REFORMAT the phone!!!)
@dxflow3271Күн бұрын
That is no good. I haven't had that issue with external SSD hard drives, but it sounds like a pain.
@TheGeoDaddyКүн бұрын
The physics of why SSDs are faster is that it does not PHYSICALLY delete any files… so there is no Search/Seek disk rotation… it’s just a relative address index to retrieve data… but - more you delete - the more space you lose and the more complicated the indexing… that’s why you reformat camera SSDs (And that’s why Apple wants you to use up the SSDs on iPhones, IPads and Macs - as they rub their grubby greedy hands - advising you to GET A NEW AND BIGGER MACHINE!!!
@TheGeoDaddy6 күн бұрын
I can already see that Sony’s Imaging Edge software comes into play… An issue for Alpha One users stuck on the camera’s 1.32 version… as subsequent firmware updates this year have either broken the Wi-Fi connection or BRICKED cameras! And - the latest version of Imaging Edge is not executable w/o the camera being at 2.02 - which Sony is still not acknowledging as a PROBLEM 🤬
@TheGeoDaddy6 күн бұрын
Just sent an inquiry to Photolab about teathering with my Sony A1 I’m looking to use Version 8 with - either - my MacBook M1 Pro or my Asus OLED (as I’m not sure which will give me the best color, performance… and mobility) FYI - was a Nikon shooter going back to the 80s - but now I shoot 90% video and their Z6 / Atomos “Filmmaker’s Kit” was a bust as they never got Apple to support their ProRes in FCPX… so had to switch to Sony $$$ but I still plan to shoot stills on the A1 and A9iii for high sync’d flash)

Hello, and thank you again for this wonderful video showing how awesome Photolab is, but I have one tiny question. When using the compare tool and you click on the "Compare tool" do you need to hold on the mouse to keep seen the effect or just one click to show the effect and click again to show again the comparison because in my case I click on the compare tool but it only shows the comparison for one microsecond and I need to click and hold the click to keep sewn the comparison of the before and after, thank you ❤❤

I wonder why DXO seem to adopt UI elements which appear to use the philosophy of "lets see how LR, C1 etc handle compare, now lets do it differently and make it as clunky as possible". It's almost painful to watch you demo what should be a very simple process.

I just downloaded Photolab 7, and the vignette tool was my biggest hang up for maybe not purchasing (I use very slight vignettes a lot), and I have no use for Filmpack, so I didn't want to spend the extra money. I wish the vignette tool were included for times when I have to do a lot of speed editing, but the methods in this video will actually work better than the vignette tool when doing portraits, which is enough to get me away from LR. I REALLY hope software companies are paying attention to all the complaints about the giant. Right NOW is a great time to try to scoop up a lot of unhappy LR customers. I shoot 40,000 pictures a year, and I have been really wanting to find an alternative to LR and Capture One, and as far as I can see, I will be purchasing PL7 at the end of my trail. Thanks for posting this video!!

Hello world. May I ask the following? If I use DxO raw and then export (I feel its import) into DxO photolab7 to do detailed work, do I need to assign the General > Correction settings > 6? No correction for RAW images, as well as checking the Automatically use superRAW noise reduction for DxO ONE Super RAW images and Automatically use Camera rendering if supported. I may have overegged the above question. If the corrections are already done in Raw, do you need to turn them off in Photolab 7 to prevent them doubling up? I hope that that is clear. Thank you to anyone who may respond.
@dxflow32712 ай бұрын
Am I understanding? You are creating a DNG with PureRaw and then bringing it into Photolab 7? I would just use Photolab in the instance unless I wanted to use XD2 noise reduction which is not in Photolab yet. That said, I just took a quick look and it seems it is smart enough to work with the PureRAW DNGs without reapplying the optical correction and noise reduction settings. So Photolab might apply other settings like smart lighting, so you would want to know what else is being applied in that preset. Hope that helps.

This is still so slow and clunky. With Lightroom, hit “c” for crop, and “x” to flip the crop orientation. 😕
@dxflow32713 ай бұрын
No doubt there are some improvements that could be made. X to swap orientation does sound quick. But I recently did a personal deep dive because I have been doing some higher volume situations where I am delivering 200-300 images per event... So I explored other tools including looking for AI auto crop options and just cropping in other tools in general... In the end I am back to doing it in photolab. With my current approach, I was far faster in photolab (and really wasn't happy with the ai result) . But milage always varies with software doesn't it? I often say, use what you love... And love what you use. :)

@@dxflow3271 I did an event this Saturday with 400 delivered. DxO's auto-straightening worked about 80% of the time. I sent all the photos back into Lightroom (as TIFFs) for final cropping (plus exposure and white balance tweaks).
