the thing that I did, I remapped all of the keys for insert mode like: imap f t that way I can enjoy the upsides of qwerty across the system AND not worry about carpel tunnel while coding.

I literally can't get anything graphical to start at all on a fresh install of Debian 12 with no Desktop Manager installed. It's Terminal ONLY, but I'm still trying to run i3. I can startx (after installing X11), but then I have to kill it via top to get back to my Terminal, and in no case can I run i3. It always gives the error: "i3: Cannot open display" and similarly xrandr errors with: "Can't open display" neither does "export DISPLAY=:0" fix the issue, nor "exec i3" I've tried many things without success. My goal is a barebones host system for running VMs on QEMU, so I don't want my Debian host using up any more system resources than absolutely necessary, and yet, I want it to be easily manageable. It's starting to feel like I'm not going to have any other choice but to install LXDE or something. 😒

I got to around 80ish on qwerty and about 90 on colemak i decided to to learn graphite as my third keyboard layout which is going alright so far although i forgot how difficult learning another can be. Im hoping i can maintain all three but i might end up forgetting qwerty since colemak is available on pretty much everything now

Dont learn either. Learn something more optimal like Graphite.

It still looks sexy after 7 years. What's funny is your mention of I3. I tried really hard for them to implement some of the automatic tiling features from WMII and the original developer said no. All of these other WMs came after WMII; WMII is more of a traditional X program. This is the WM that got me into tiling and no other WM has matched the experience of WMII.

[dvorak user] i've dealt with the shortcuts switcheroo on dvorak by using right ctrl for undo, copy & paste (and save sometimes), pressing right ctrl with my left thumb if my right hand is on the mouse. however this isn't necessary for cut since x is still on the left half of the keyboard

I have been using Dvorak for probably over a decade now, 50-60 WPM with high accuracy (98-100%). Just recently tried to get back into Colemak, which I originally tried to learn alongside Dvorak over a decade ago, but gave up for obvious reasons (it was just too mentally straining--I needed to focus on one, plus I got what I wanted... the "feel" of the layout for comparison to Dvorak). I was probably at about 12-18 WPM when I abandoned it, and after a couple days typing here and there I'm at 17-20 WPM. Certainly didn't take anywhere near as long to get up to speed as it did originally. I have a handful of problem keys--most are letters that I instinctively go for the Dvorak key, but ironically QWERTY's "S" is one of the big ones since it is so close, just one off. I didn't think I had any QWERTY left in me, but apparently it's hardwired and although I haven't used it in forever, it still screws with my Colemak!

Being 61 years old, you will probably call me crazy, but I started with Colemak 3 days ago. Was at 20-25 wpm on day 2. My qwertz speed was about 50-60 wpm. Today I changed to Colemak DHm even though I don't really like the lower row of keys. But I have an Ergodox so thought it might be a better fit. For my "normal" German keyboard I made a layout that only changes the letter keys - having to re-learn all special characters would have been too much. Luckily it's easy on a Mac using Ukelele. Only had to shift ö and ä one step to the right.

If he has his path set to $HOME/.local/bin, he doesnt need to specify the directories within that location. They'll be found automatically.

Dvorak didn't help me type faster, but it DID help me type more effortlessly. And you can learn to swap back and forth between Dvorak and QWERTY like I did. It just takes your brain a couple of days to differentiate the two layouts.

I touch type on Dvorak and only on Dvorak. I learned it because I never learned to type properly on Qwerty. I was a 35-year old professional pecking out 100 page documents with two fingers on Qwerty. It was ridiculous. So I invested the 10 hours it took me to learn to touch type on Dvorak using some typing tutor app (don't recall the name). If you don't already touch type on Qwerty, then learning a better layout (Dvorak or maybe Colemak) IS worth it. If you already touch type on Qwerty, then I can't say. Maybe not -- unless you suffer carpal tunnel because Dvorak at least minimizes finger movement a great deal relative to Qwerty.

For Dvorak copy pasting since most environments are windows in work it's relatively easy at least for me to press windows + space to change back to qwerty for copy pasting then back for typing. It's one extra step but it's not too bad if you don't wanna use something like autohotkey to fix it.

Why the need of LVM if I'm running a 2tb hard drive?
