How different from our ghastly country these days. People were well-spoken, well-dressed, tattoo-free, aspirational and respectful. And still we’re told how the various cultures and sexualities that dominate our media have enriched us all. The drive for inclusion has done the opposite and resulted in a fragmented and angry society. I had to stop watching this splendid advert compilation as it depressed me to see what’s become of our violent, drug-ridden, uneducated and crass nation.

I was about to say I loved these simpler times without all the madness in the world but remembered I used to be scared as a child of the threat of nuclear war. And here I am still worrying at nearly 50 😢

Woolworths, the company that basically went out of business because it didn't move with the times and ran into financial trouble, it's sad. I believe in the US it is was called a five and dime store.
@RetroSteveUKКүн бұрын
I vaguely remember from the research, it started as an alternative to five and dime.

Lots of these adverts have carols in the background. And it's about family. Now there is no religious link. It's just a big party. I preferred things then.

Thing is expectations were much lower then. I got a transistor radio one yr and was over the moon . Kids these days expect you to bankrupt yourself for them and still don't appreciate what you get for them.

What occurs to me is how expensive everything was when you take into account the average wage back then.

There was a funny one from the early 1980's-not sure if it was national or just aired in the Southern Region A guy is mowing his lawn & his phone rings upstairs in the house. He goes up the stairs & you hear him talking, but he didn't switch the mower off & it then goes in the house & follows him up the stairs & then you hear a scream. Never been able to find it anywhere, or any mention of it.

Yeah, I don't remember ever seeing that one. Sounds funny though.

Do you have the following advert in your archives? Someone comes in from the kitchen to announce “we’re having …chicken” All hell breaks loose in the living room. Granny goes back over on her seat (I think) Two old ladies walking past the house hear the commotion and one says “I think they’re having chicken” It must be around 1978-1979. I don’t know if it is for chicken, or gravy, or paxo stuffing. My memory is very hazy.

Not likely to be in any compilations on this channel .. I have no recollection of that at all. If it ever turns up though, it will invariably end up on a food products collection.

I love the way most adverts then were more "technical" in nature. Especially the Panasonic one for their video recorder. Can you imagine most people understanding anything technical now? Perhaps this shows how society has been dumbed down over the years??
@RetroSteveUK3 күн бұрын
Spot on. As most consumer tech has become more user-friendly, the level of technical knowledge has probably dropped.
