On an extended (maybe permanent) hiatus myself partly due to 1) personally noticing the player community becoming weirdly negative, and raids/roulettes generally unpleasant (if I could even get in, 45+ -minute queue times ahoy!); 2) Not feeling I was getting as much value as before out of my subscription from the content on offer - for example, I'll never stop ranting about how enraged I was to find that many new features such as Island Sanctuary were just more busy work. I wasn't expecting Rune Factory levels of depth, but I wasn't anticipating I would be forced into a robot cat's tropical themed sweatshop, churning out products to meet market demand instead of RELAXING on my ISLAND that was a GIFT for SAVING THE UNIVERSE. AGAIN. Despite all that I do not think the game is "dying," and don't even think that the mobile version will pose that kind of threat. I counted on this happening once the game started getting really popular, with the now huge player population and some bad habits the dev team has acquired over the years finally coming to a head, folks going back to WoW now that it's gotten back on its feet, staff changes (new writers have to learn SOMEHOW), ect. It could possibly not be a game for me anymore, but it's going to take way more of a string of actual disasters to put it in true jeopardy.

I would love for you to publish these as an audio podcast, just for my convenience. (Just remember to caption/describe visual items) I haven't found XIV very 'broadening'. It's made me feel better since I get to mix with a wider group of people nationally/country wise. However, most XIV communities are VERY much "no region, no POLITICS,take conversations to DM", and now you just have another missed opportunity to charge things, and break people out of their group think on subjects that matter. MMOs dint really matter. Not in that way. It's really good to hear Debbie is not going to just sweep it all under the carpet. It's becoming a bit of a hallmark of the XIV culture. Ignore it. Sweep it under the carpet. Don't criticise anything..Pretend mods aren't a thing. Etc. My experience of losing in EU is that you do notice the differences. But you still really enjoy each other's company. Personally, I can't try and find new communities because I no longer see the point. I know that my types of players (easy going non log obsessed casuals, non wierd add-on clubber RPers, will just leave at end game... yet again. I can't keep doing that)

For new players there is loads to do. For players who have played the game for a few years, there is nothing to do. Unless you are the 5% that do savage level content. The game desperately needs some new content. The crashing player numbers testify to this. Wakey wakey SE!

(P.S.Try deleting your cookies? I seem to remember I had problems with character selection because I was doing it wrong because it was that jank and hard to work out what it wanted from me.)... On the flaw in how backlisting works it is 'major'. I work with software and it is in all my time, when considering the combination of both the 'tehcnical' nature, no 'stupidity', of the vulnerability when mixed with the poorness of the response, hands down the worst thing I have seen in IT in decades. It's only saving grace is that its a game, the privacy issue is just some game characters, so who gives a fk. (It's unlikely this will lead to an IRL dox or anything, although it does increase the chance.) However, I have seen much worse technical f ups, but the response eventually recognised the degree of the F up even if the fix was poor. I have seen F ups with way worse impact (many millions of work to fix urgently, many millions of people disrupted, many millions lost or more) But the 'technical' nature of this f up beggars belief. It is no exaggeration to say that an amateur coder would not make this mistake, and then after that they are incapable of recognising and accepting responsibility. The faul tis so bad, and the repsonse is so bad, so long on going, should be so easy for them to understand, which should leave them with no choice but to at least acknowledge. Its a major issue because it is 'so' technically incompetent if you assume XIV matters at all, and it will apparently remain this broken and incompetent forever as yet.

What -might- bring me back to FFXIV (and maybe help new players, I don’t know) is to unlock more jobs at level 1. I have no issue keeping the current expansions new jobs locked where they are. But maybe open up machinist/dancer/reaper/etc at the beginning rather than making players have to slog through everything before getting to enjoy them.

I prob won't touch the game again until the whole 'SE can do nothing wrong' attitude changes. It's genuinely killing the game causing them not to take risks and delivering the same cookie cutter formula for the last 2 expansions. The annoying MC of the exp has killed any interest in the story going forward so it's hard to rely on that for enjoyment as well. None of my friends have any interest in playing anymore due to the above reasons so that's mainly why.

I play on Midgardsormr, I've found a few housing wards with 10 house plots under tha same FC <Bank> a bot. FC of a member of 1 taking almost every house plot. Is there a way to report that crap because it's so hard to get a house and they swipped small and med houses. I've been playing for 10 years and every now and then I take a year off to play other games. This time my husband and I were off for 2 years and just got back into it.

If I have to be 100% honest my concern with the game isn't the state of it, since usually games like this have its ups and downs, its how it might effect it since Square does have a history of shutting down a lot of their live service games with no hesitation. Yes most of those games were not great (in fact some might be straight up garbage) but so was 1.0 and look what they did to it. I admit I have a habit of expecting the worst outcomes and it'll probably won't happen (at least not in the near future) but I can't stop thinking about it.

It's not a bad thing, but it kind of indicates how bad Dawntrail is... I rate it below ARR. That's how bad it was - to me.

I'm still playing and though my enthusiasm has dropped significantly despite knowing we wouldnt reach the hights of ShB or EW (with all the prior work going into them). Still, I also dont think FF14 is in dire straits. I played WoW for over 14 years, and with all the articles written about "WoW is dead/dying" in the past twenty years you could build a direct road to the moon. Player numbers drop after every patch. Its nothing new. I'll admit, I have considered taking a break too for a couple month, but losing my cottage... on a highly populated server... nah :D Who knows, maybe I'll be able to ge a medium one soon :P

It feels like we've hit a point where people can openly criticize Dawntrail without getting attacked. I think it's a good thing over all that people can finally share opinions but the fact that you don't get a lot of the aggressive defense like you used to makes me wonder if the discontent isn't even worse than it seems. I would imagine there are a plethora of problems behind the scenes and one of them I see signs of all over the expansion is financial. It feels like Square Enix is funneling money away from their only game that is turning a profit and putting it into all sorts of ill advised ventures to the detriment of 14. That would explain a lot of the un-voiced cutscenes filling time as well as the noticeable lack of voice performances over all. I very much hope they can pivot and recover going into 8.0. I think Dawntrail's story will forever be a blemish but the expansion over all will be looked at more favorably by players that play through it years from now once all of the extremely back loaded patch content is already there waiting for them.

as someone who loves FF14, i've pretty much stopped watching alot of content creaters/YTbers for FF14 almost completely outside of maybe one or 2 and even then i watch those 1 or 2 very sporadically even now. it gets to the point where i am just so tired of hearing nothing but negativity of how the game sucks in one way or another on top of, god forbid, you even say you like/love the game still by being called a "white knight" for either the game itself or YoshiP. it exhausting to say the least tbh and just want to enjoy the game in peace without constantly hearing the game sucks in some way. idk where the game will wind up in 5 or even 10 years from now but i hope those that do nothing but hate on it can find peace with it or themselves if it just winds up not being for them anymore. but as much negative airs that are around 14 at the moment, i still love the game and will continue to do so. and honestly maybe it is time for some new faces and voices for the game to be brought forward for FF14, with those that have been larger than most not happy with 14 in one way or another then honestly maybe its best for them to step away for a while and let new blood and voices for it to fill in that gap with some fresh opinions and ideas for the game itself going forward

TLDR the current game is too hard for me and the elitist too toxic they can f off and burn this game to the ground for all I care. Detailed rant below. For me I am a hyper casual old school mmo player ans super SUPER bad at them. You put me into a Helldivers 2 Helldive difficulty and I can kick its ass like a Ninja. If it's an action game or a single player rpg or even an rts I am all super good, Put me into a giant game of boring Simon's says that is ff14 and it is possibly my worse game of ALL TIME. I ONLY tolerate it because of modding, but Dawntrail has OFFICIALLY become too hard for me. I've been playing since Shadowbringers and have never been able to beat an easy savage raid legit. FF14 is the type of relaxing game I want in between real games but they killed its relaxed and chill difficulty. I am so SOOOOO bad at pattern and memory recognition and that is all an old school mmo IS and its BORING AS SHIT. Even growing up as a kid and finding out what WoW was ion its golden age I looked at them quizially and never "got"traditional MMO. I never played an mmo seriously until ESO and lesser extent GW2 which I will be reasoning with as Dawntrail players keep telling em to get good but I have been trying since Shadowbringers and never will. TLDR the game has a gigantic new found ACTUALLY toxic elitism destroying the game and truth be told I kind of hope these morons burn ff14 so close to the ground square bans them on sight tor almost killing their cash cow.

I honestly think this latest expansion shows how spoiled people are and how quick people are to be 2 sided. FF 14 blew up I'd say unnaturally due to twitch and streams screaming the games praises form the roof tops. People caught up for endwalker and then might have quit saying ok i saw the end of the story I'm satisfied. But now people who stayed plus veterans and are crying out how bad the game is and its doomed after a mid expac and two fantastic ones. Is it, maybe. is it soon to tell, definitely.

I think another big problem is just the gaming market today is just toxic from the studios to the consumers. If something is bad, gamers will literally revel in somethings failure which we see in the new article players are leaving dt which validates peoples feelings. But then on another hand we cannot see what goes on in these studios. We dont know all the deadlines going on or what the higher ups are forcing these developers to do. For all we know, somethings can truly be out of the hand of the developers and when you vote with your wallets per say you dont even hurt the higher ups making these decisions, you hurt the developers. No one is entitled to anyones money, but it is sad to see how things have become where i will outwardly see people shitting on the dev team. And yeah maybe yoshi p and his team arent perfect ( no one is) but its come to the point where its toxic. You dont want to be too positive where everything is good, everything is perfect. But no need to be disrespectful either. Then on top of it all, its a huge tug of war between the casual and the hardcore player base that will create even more tension. Yes there were things i didnt like about dt and dt storyline. Missed opportunities, lots of forced writing. It felt rushed in many areas so i understand peoples frustration with it. But then there were some areas of dt i really liked like the glamour and the content and the locations. The graphics update is great and i just really liked the cyberpunk solution 9 section of the game. The game definitely has an isssue with content updates, but again how much of that is the devs fault vs SE.

Im new to the game, on a free trial. Red mage lvl 53 and Im through post ARR stuff so suddenly I decided to do Marauder/warrior. I hope the game gets better for me to keep thinking that giving my time to it would be worthy. ❤ I like the game so far

Not knowing the setting completely doesn't seem like a problem to me, since even in more well-known systems, this isn't always a reality. My current group is playing Pathfinder without knowing the Golarion setting in depth. In fact, this usually happens to us... I'm still waiting for some things that weren't shown in the test, some of them I really have a bad feeling about. Anyway, I thought your analysis was very well done. As someone who's played since very early Heavensward, AND who doesn't rely on the game to make an income, I'm probably in a better spot than most to have an informed opinion on the current state of the game. It's alright, and it WILL improve the second we get exploration content. They're also fixing some long-standing issues, which is nice. So let's address each major complaint: "Job design is boring": Almost exclusively stated by exactly 3 players. Astro Mains, Old Summoner Mains, and Dark Knight Mains. Astro and Dark Knight have always historically been the problem children in terms of job design, so their complaining is nothing new, you learn to tune it out. Old Summoner Mains have been peeved for almost 4 years, and still haven't gotten over the job being reworked. Understandable, but also kinda just... get over it at this point? "No variety in job design": Let me introduce you to Heavensward job design, where 5 entire classes were non-viable in high-end content for most of the expansion. We've all heard the Machinist players complaining about their job being kinda mid, now imagine that for HALF the existing jobs. You have two options, relatively balanced jobs which can ALL reliably clear content, or 'diverse' jobs where half of them don't work, and you get flamed for experimenting. "The netcode": Your 300ms ping isn't SE's issue. Get better internet, or deal with it. If I can blatantly greed in AoE's and not get slapped for it, then it DEFINITELY isn't the 'netcode'. "Dawntrail's Story": Play Genshin Impact from Mondstadt to Natlan, THEN get back to me on yapping. Sure, Dawntrail wasn't Peak Fiction like Endwalker, and maybe Wuk Lamat did have a yapping problem, but hey, at least she isn't Paimon, and at least you can skip cutscenes if Wuk starts nervous-yapping. And let's be honest with ourselves, a 'good story' for MMO's isn't exactly a high bar to reach. Dawntrail was alright, and that's all I expected. "Quality of life": Let's be honest with ourselves, this is mostly glamour plate complaints, and THIS is a fair complaint. We've needed more glamour plates for a while now, and I wouldn't say no to 30 plates. I think a core thing people need to realise, is how the devs are likely basing their entire design philosophy for the game on the exact opposite of whatever early Heavensward was doing. Early Heavensward was the lowest point for the game since 1.0 crashed and burned, and not enough people realise that. There's a WORLD of difference between "Game's kinda boring and safe at the moment" and "Half the classes are non-viable, the raid scene's on fire because of literal gear checks, crafting/gathering sucks, Diadem sucks, Lords of Verminion died on launch, the relic series was mid, the Alliance Raid sucks, the aetheryte placement is the worst we've ever had, etc, etc."
